I loaded up a blu-ray movie and paused it. When I returned from my phone call I clicked play on the bluetooth blu-ray remote and WHAM!!!! The ps3 shut off. Not only did it shut off but the green/red light went off too. I attempted to unplug/replug the cable to the wall outlet and even tried multiple outlets and power cables and nothing. It's like the unit just died. :banghead:
I called sony and they are going to send me a box to return everything. Has anyone else even heard of this happening or am I the lucky one. :(

Hmm. I had a similar experience like this.
Cant remember so well:
I was installing Fedora Core 5 Linux on it one time (with a separate 2.5 HDD) and did something (i think it was during the installing in kboot process) where the system auto shut off and when i went to try to power it back up i went into a mild panic.
Tried unplugging/replugging everything and nothing.
Then unplugged again i switched the on and off power button on the back and even touched the eject and turn on sensors on the front for a few seconds all with the power cord not connected as dumb as it may sound.
I figured the PS3 must have some internal battery with memory settings still active regardless.
With the power on the back switched to off i plugged back in the power cord and hit the switch on the back and the lil red light went back on.
Cant remember how it really happend cus ive been very careful with the system but sure doesnt sound normal to have a game on pause then having to see you system off and not turning on again.
In the menu the settings theres an auto shut off of some sort but that complete shutdown where it looks like its dead is suck ass dumb.
Could be some sort of secure overheat shut off thing where the disk is always spining in the same spot or theres a heat detector where the system has no activity and it will auto shut off to cool down inse someone is away for a long time.
Nice that i saw this thread cus ill be looking up some info of this.

Yea, I'm not sure if there is some kinda protection either. I dont remember messing with the auto shutoff feature. It was the strangest thing. Hope the support is as good as I've heard. I'm sure they'll make it up to me. One thing though...my movie...IS STILL IN THERE. The sony rep told me that there is no way to remove it without voiding the warranty if the unit does not turn on.
I've been told that i'll get it back....we'll see.

Not sure what i did to fix it but try this if you wish:
Make sure the power on button on the back is set to off.
Have no usb or other things plugged in except just the power and audio/video cables connected.
This may sound dumb but i remember doing something like this and it worked.
With the switch in the back set to "off" and with the power plus video to TV plugs in place, touch the turn on button on the front for about 15 secs, then the eject for 15 sec.
Now switch the power button on the back to "on" and again touch the turn on button on the front for about 15 secs, then the eject for 15 sec.
If nothing, then again with the power button on the back still set to "on", this time touch the eject button for another 15 secs.
I recently skinned my PS3 and have the eject button covered so when there is a disk in it it doesnt always eject it out as fast as it did unskinned so i use the force disk out method which is hold the eject button for 10 or 15 seconds.
That may trigger a way for it to release the disk in the system even if it show no red light. Maybe.

djanice: I think the psu in your ps3 died so you need to get it replaced.
Illicious: With yous I think it was data corruption probably from the usb cord becoming loose during the install. It either was just the data in memory and so it got cleared and the ps3 worked again or the firmware got corrupted and it has a failsafe that restores the firmware.

I called them today to see where my shipping box is. I have been informed that even though they have had five (four if you don't count Christmas day) days - my box has not been shipped. The Sony rep then proceeded to inform me that they have between 5-7 business days to get me my box.
UUUgggh! Meanwhile my PS3 sits gathering dust and my movie....remains in the belly of the beast.

I'm still waiting on my box. I called sony on Thursday (the seventh business day of waiting excluding holodays) and finally got a tracking number for my box. They just shipped it yesterday. Who knows how long I'm going to be waiting.

I know no one probably cares, but my box CAME TODAY!!!!!! I packed up my ps3 with all of its accessories (everyone should know that if you EVER need to return the ps3 you better have ALL the original cables that came with it) and am going to take the morning off work to ship it at the UPS office. My box has a next day air sticker on it so I figure that it will get to Laredo Wednesday...in one or two days someone will pack up my new PS3 with (hopefully) my movie removed from the old one, and in another day or so VOILA I'm back in business. With any luck it'll be a week.
We shall see.

I got my ps3 back on friday. Well, not my ps3 but a BRAND NEW ONE!!!! I also received my disc that was stuck in the old one as well. The disc was covered in fingerprints, but atleast I got it back. The new PS3 was manufactured in December instead of November and has a full 1 year warranty. I just have to keep the paperwork they sent me in case something goes wrong again. The sony reps couldnt tell me what happened to the old one, they all speculated that it may have been dropped or banged around. The whole process took THREE WEEKS! Too long if you asked me, but atleast they next day shipped the box and the ps3 back and forth each time.
