like many new ps3 owners on a buget, i'm looking to buy a new monitor to play on vs an hdtv because the cost.
memoryexpress.com/index.php?PageTag=&page=file&memx_menu=EmbedProductDetail.php&DisplayProductID=8409&SID=
(add www to the beginning, sorry can't post links yet)
this is the monitor i'm planning on buying (if one at all). it has hdcp support so it i should be able to play the ps3, from what i've read anyway. before i go out and blow $250 i'm here to confirm that this monitor will infact enable me to play my ps3 in hd. so it will, right?
even if it will work, if you have a compelling argument for why i should not buy a monitor to play on then please speak up. it's either i buy this monitor or buy a crt tv until i can save up enough for an lcd hdtv (which will be by the beginning of summer:-pray: )

You have to get an HDTV that is widescreen and has HDMI or Component inputs to play in HD. Plus it has to support HD resulutions, 720p 1080, 1080p ect.
If you're dead set on using a monitor for your PS3 be sure it has these features:
DVI Port
HDCP Support
Native resolution is close to 1280x720 or 1920x1080
That link isn't working for me, so I can't tell you for sure if it's any good. Truth be told, the PS3 is best played with an HDTV, preferrably one capable of 1080P.

Good point Toma, if it has a DVI port you must use something else for sound also. Native resolition of AT LEAST 1280x720 is a MUST, 1920x1080 is needed but 1080p is only in larger TV's. over 40". IT MUST have HDCP support. You would really be better of with an HDTV a monitor is too much trouble.

the link didn't work? ok, try this one instead (add www at beginning obviously)
samsung.com/ca/products/monitor/lcd_digital/ls19hawkb2xaa.asp?page=Specifications
specs:
- 19" widescreen (1440x900 native resolution. that should work, right?)
- HDTV Ready with DVI input with HDCP support
- 4ms (Gray-to-Gray) response time
what will i need in addition to the monitor to play ps3? I know i need a HDMI to DVI adaptor, but what about sound. i'm assuming i'll have to run sound through my pc. how is that accomplished?
this is only a temporary substitute for an hdtv for a few months, and it won't be go to waste after that time because i'll be using in a dual monitor setup. my current tv is so bad i have to buy something, and it's either this, which i wanted anyway for the dual monitor setup, or a 27", which i won't use at all once i get the hdtv. the monitor seems like a reasonable choice to me.
thank you for your responses
That monitor should work, but you'll have to figure out some other way to get audio; possibly from the Toslink port.

When you setup the PS3 for it's video and sound outputs you can have it so the HDMI outputs only video and then have the sound output coming from the A/V port or the Optical port.
Then all he'll need is a RCA to 3.5mm adapter so it'll work with a PC soundcard.

For a widescreen display, don't forget to check if the monitor is 16:10 vs 16:9. Most PC monitors are 16:10 while consoles and dvd movies are typically made with 16:9 in mind. On some or most of the 16:10 monitors, they may stretch the 16:9 image to the 16:10 space. On the 16:10 monitors with advanced features, such as 1:1 pixel mapping, the image will be displayed properly with black bars on the top and bottom without any stretching.
However, to some people, the stretched image doesn't bother them though.
