so i got a 60 gig ps3 from gamestop here earlier this week...they have been getting shipments in weekly thank god....and i got resistance and it locks up a whole lot....i havent been able to check any other game yet
i've searched online and forums and everything...people say its because of overheating others say its a defective unit when people complain of lock ups...i've also read that the firmware just needs updated...can anyone confirm the update helps with lock ups? i'm on dialup at home for the holidays and downloading 100 megs isnt the best thing to do with my day unless i know it will help.
thanks for any advice.

Is it set vertical or Horizontal? I've had Resistance going for around 3 hours while horizontal and had no problems although I've never had any problems while vertical either.
Don't have the PS3 on carpet or in a display case or anywhere that is likely to restrict airflow, make sure it's got a bit of space around it so that it can properly cool down.

I think you should return your system and get a different one, I played Resistance for over 4 hours and had no lockups or problems what so ever. You might want to try updating your firmware but I don't think that will help any. Make sure your no blocking any of the vents so that the PS3 gets over heated.

well thanks for the info guys...
i've had mine horizontal and vertical both on a flat table top in the open...and sometimes it will lock up within mintues other times hours and sometimes not at all, so like i said...i really dont think its a heat issue.
now i just have to wait until gamestop gets more in.
just wondering...what version of the firmware are you guys running? i have the 1.10 by default on mine

well i called gamestop a couple different days and they never did have a new shipment in for an exchange so i thought i'd try to update my firmware just to make sure.
so now i'm running v1.32 and i'm pretty sure the system locks up more than it did before...so it wasnt a firmware problem. it will play dvds fine. i havent tried any blu-ray movies...but i have a feeling they will lock up too.
i tried to call sony but the lines were full so i emailed them thru their support website....hopefully i get a response soon.

Yeah, there's always problems with the early models of consoles. Why would the PS3 be any different?

with any hardware you find a few bad ones and that is what I think yours is.

My system also locks up (freezes) but only when its on carpet or when its in my tv enclosure (which only has 3 sides, the front is open).
Seems not to lockup when its in an open area. Any when else having a similar issue, its kind of a piss off cause my HDMI cable is only 1m long and it wont reach to far.
