Hmm. They both suck? <ducks> :)

Seriously, though, I think it's too early to judge the merits of either system as they haven't been out very long.

I would think twice about buying a 360 right now because from what I've seen sales have been rather lukewarm in the US and non-existent in Japan. And with the PS3's price tag right now I'll just laugh and walk away.

I have both running NFS Carbon side by side and the graphics look the same. £180 vs £450. PS3 has a better spec but damm the XBOX has been out a year and it is cheap as chips. Microsoft are giving them away. I wonder how many PS3's are gonna be under the X-mas tree this year?

In terms of games, X360. Why?, Viva Pinata and Gears of War ofc! ;]

All i can say, i own a xbox 360, and i like it. but for graphics the ps3 wins. I hate gears of war (my Opionion).. the view was too "Resident evil 4-ish" but when we compair some realtime racing to the Grand Turismo in hd... yea ill choose ps3 anyday! maybe expensive but its not the bad expensive, as the blue ray dvd rom is Way cheaper for the ps3!. but a-lot of games that are goin to be out will be on the xbox 360 as well. I just got the xbox 360 to tide me over sort of speakin.

-If you buy the good version of xbox 360 yea it may be 400 some dollars but if you want wireless and a hd dvd player.. it comes out to roughtly 700 some $. when you get the good version of ps3 it comes with blueray and wifi. at about 624 (with tax and crap)

I think both are with same specifications if don't count BD rom os PS3 and as you know this BD rom were the main problem for SONY to have this many delays for lunch PS3.. I can't understand why this BD rom in PS3 if the same games in XBOX 360 runing Dual Layer DVD rom with the same quality of graphics...

You guys are wrong to compare game graphics at this point. The large game developers like EA, maker of NFS:Carbon, purposely scale back or limit the graphics to ensure compatibility. i.e. same game on many consoles = larger profits. This is especially true when they don't have experience with the console yet. I use the analogy of running Solitaire on a Pent III vs Pent IV. Wow the same amazing graphics. Just give it some time before comparing the two graphics wise.

Damn many xbox360 turned back to us with different code (Three red light of the DOOM and here cannot explained codes:'21' '1203' '112' 'E72' etc...)Many repaired with hot air gun method&fan mod and many cannot repaired turned back to M$.
So now I wait for PS3 with high price but;(Each one will come to us approx $800 but no prob.) I don't care about price just I know "I love Sony"...

The Micro$hit sucker think we are stupid - when PS2 Released the first Games comes out on a CD too. its the same at this day with BD but the Time has Come and all the Devs. like BD and than 360 is past and have non support like the X-Box sony have the support for PS1 in PS3 and i can play all may Games who i paid . Great and My PS2 i sell it to a child that has not the Chance to become a PS3 .

From looking at what's been made public about the architectures, it looks to me like 360 has the better graphics subsystem, while PS3 is stronger at number-crunching. In addition to what gelato mentioned about cross-platform development, I think we're far enough past the point of diminishing returns in GPU advances that the difference in graphics ability won't be especially noticeable. In the end, though, it's mostly up to developers to apply what each system gives them.

the problem is that the launch games have to be compared with launch games, and not second year games.

i see the potential of the PS3, its powerful, the online browser is good, even works with YOUTUBE, and also plays two webpages at once if you want.

i was able to connect my bluetooth H700 headset for online gaming, as well as a USB microphone for well karaoke games. that is nice.

the control is kinda different, but works, no rumble. sad but true.

the visuals i like, and i find that HD 1080P movies are awesome!

as far as graphics and stuff like that, i think the ps3 will come out on top eventually yes its easier to develop on the xbox360, i mean look at xbox1, vb library was needed that was it really. PS has always been a hardware first software second kind of system. they need to improve on that.

what i do not like is the fact that the Xbox360 doesn't have HDMI, DVI support, bluetooh, wireless NIC or high def media for games. Now before all you xboxfanboys go nuts, let me explain.

Do you think the reason the ps3 has these extras, 1080P, HDMI, DVI support, Hi-Def media support is because they waited a year. the answer is no. at CES in 2004 I happened to see this big push for HDMI and i was like oh that must be some asian/japanese standard we just got DVI. well it turns out, they have HDMI since 2003 (panasonic DVD player had HDMI on it, mfg date: Aug 2004). So if I seen this, M$ people must of seen this too. and why not have something for the next level of output. Same with HD-Dif media. but what happened is this. M$ took advantage of "we are not there yet with new media outputs standard" and released xbox360. so in 1-2 more years, they can RELEASE xbox1080P? that way, they can sell the fanboys another system, instead of making a system good for 5years. they are taking the xbox to the same level as WORD. Almost every year a new word program. expecting everyone to upgrade, or force us to upgrade.

We all know HD media was coming, why not put it in there for games, image the worlds, uncompressed video, etc. I bought the Xbox360 becuase of Full Auto, now we are told that FULL AUTO 2 will not come out for the xbox360 because they need bigger media size.

so M$ knew about all these new standards, all they had to do is visit japan since 2003 and know about them, but they didn't.

I remember during E3 on G4 they asked one of the min game developers (don't remember who just remember he was kinda bald lol) what he thought was better. The 360? or the Ps3? he replied by saying they are pretty much the same but the PS3 comes out in front on high-end graphics. I like my 360and all, but man does it heat up fast and the "blade" will freeze alot when you open it durin games that use all the cores (Gears of War). So I think the PS3 is more of a multitasking system compared to the 360.

I don't think the performance of the machines will be that different to influence the decission what to buy.

For me other facts are more important:

XBOX360
+ price
+ tray loader drive
+ rumble
+ vga
- very loud
- external psu
- no digital video out
- only few xbox1 titles work
- design, esp. the colors

PS3
+ open platform (linux...)
+ allows more free use of media files/storage
+ more silent
+ internal psu
+ digital video out, but sadly with hdcp
+ backwards compatible close to 100%
- no vga out
- slot in drive, I fear scratches
- design, shiny surface
- no rumble
- less available video resolutions, no scaler (?)

So, sadly neither can fully convince me.
Maybe I'll wait until a real GranTurismo5 is available in 2-3 years :(

From chris007's list, the only thing I don't consider a pro or con is the rumble feature. For me I don't even notice the rumble when I'm playing unless it's part of the game like the AP sensor in the MGS series. I can see why Sony decided to leave it out. But that's just me.

hello all

Beware of Rant

I would like to bring some concerns that i have to this topic to see how you guys feel about it. I own both the ps3 and xbox360 both top end version's i'm also a pc gamer so i am a gamer at heart. I know we all heard from sony how nexgen don't start to ps3 came out well it's out and im a little worryed as i am a fan of the playstation brand. Articles like these get my gears turning read at one 1up and gamesindustry those are good reads but im worryed for ps3 on my own grounds of thinking they lost a bunch of exclusive's i read some were that they was so busy trying to cater to their jap companys like capcom and some others they couldent focus on the USA and euro game devs and Micorsoft benefited from it with Rocketstar and getting Assissens Creed. The devs of Assissens Creed said they wanted it to be a ps3 only title but sony was to busy helpping the jap devs learn how to make games for ps3 on the dev kits not only does this bother me but 360 and ps3 games look just a like and sony has nothing really to offer at this point that is Ground breaking as in game wise. Micorsoft is really making some good choices and got a strong line up of games and accessories. I aslo read some were else that Devil may cry 4 may be coming to the Xbox360 that capcom was so happy with Dead rising sells on the 360. 360 is also getting capcoms Lost PLanet exclusive and Crackdown from Rocketstar witch came out today and is exclusive to xbox360 as well. I'm just making the points that got me worryed Sony has changed gaming with the ps1 in a real good way. The ps2 had few launch titles and i got to add the system had no AA to smooth out jaggys to me the Dreamcast games looked better at that time but ps2 games started looking good God of war and such. I'm hoping and praying that the ps3 gets the momentum that the ps2 did that made it number #1. None of us ps3 owners want to see nothing but 360 ports on the system. My biggest worry is the ps3 will be like the gamecube only 1st party support with little 3rd party support.

Homebrew.....simple as. Who ever gets the edge on application developments will be the winner. As much as i hate to say this, xbox had the edge over ps2, until recently, (with ulanchelf , sms, etc) the ps2 has now pitched the xbox. No proper homebrew apps are yet avaliable on xbox360, but ps3 has just been released......the winner for me will be the following:

EMULATORS RUNNING AT FULL SPEED WITH PROPER SOUND, I.E. Snes, Genesis, GBA/NDS, and most of all a decent Divx player. ;)

Bring on the program's lets gets there first this time. :-pray:

I hear what your saying but all of this my PC can do i don't know many people who knows how to use Linux off the back of their hand. Not many people are going to buy a $640 console that includes tax to use linux on. Games is what sell's a console at this point im pretty disapointed in the launch line up and the games im seeing. Sony had a spare year and some change to really push games before the launch in the USA AND JAPAN and all i heard at those E3 press conferences if people really want nextgen they will wait for ps3 and ps3 is truly ground breaking and all of that. We waited and what we get is a bunch of xbox360 hand me down games? I expected better form all SONY claimed at the past 2 years of e3 they kept saying 360 was just a xbox 1 upgrade and then since all is out in the opened their neck and neck in graphic's just that 360 is easyer to develop for and games like Resident evil 5 and elvon for ps3 have not been spoken of since last e3 i know alot of us feel cheated and lied too thats all im saying. I'm not a fanboy of ether console but i am a fan of games and that is what ps3 is really lacking the xbox360 titles their getting most have been out a year already. I'm really starting to wonder if the ps3 was not profitable on ebay how many people would had really bought one just for the games? Their is a dam good chance xbox360 will be number #1 in the USA and Wii be number #1 in japan.

For those who said the 360 has equal or better graphics while the PS3 is a number cruncher, well that's what Sony is going for. The 360 has the graphics advantage when you're comparing 2 non high def consoles. When the PS3 comes out with more high def games, that is when the number crunching is going to show off the PS3's graphics. The sheer processing power is for those many many pixels. Another reason why it's too early to compare.

1) some people in this thread need to brush up on the english language as your ability to type properly shows.
2) It's too early to start comparing consoles, to be honest all of the next gen consoles are awesome and worth getting into, not one of them is totally shit.

I hate this fanboyism crap, why hate other consoles for? what is the fucking point in restricting yourself for? personally I'll end up with all 3 consoles, why? because I like to play games regardless of what system it's on or who made it.

When some real quality titles are released for both systems, then and ONLY then can you really compare the systems games. I'm going to bet the PS3 will have some amazing looking games due to the Cell and its 7 SPU's but then again the 360 has a better GPU so really both are quite equal.

Don't stop yourself from playing a game because it's on a different system, that's a really fucking dumb way to make yourself look like a complete dork.
The most powerful system isn't always the winner, that's a fucking fact.

1) Somebody's in a bad mood.
2) We don't need the grammar police.
3) We would like to compare consoles (not yet though) because the likely fact is that we don't all have $300-500 to spend on 3 different consoles.
4) I have not seen any of the "fanboyism" that you speak of. I don't think anyone has said they're not going to buy such and such console.

I'm not talking about this thread but just in general, there are so many people that rant on about how they hate certain consoles for no good reason, I'm just venting a little, its annoying.

Neither do I but over the course of 2-3 years most can or would if they are interested in the console.

I'm not attacking anyone here, sorry if I've come across in that way. :)

hmmm the 360 has 1080p media, both movies and games. SO let me get this straight, 7gb's on a BR disk takes up more space than 7gb's on a DVD9 disk? agan im confused at the statement that launch games should be compared? WHY does people keep saying this? have you forgotten that the exclusives available to the PS3 at launch had the same or close to the same amount of development time available to 360 games that are releasing now! Also keep in mind when the 360 entered the market that development for cross platform games were basically ports of games developed on under powered current gen consoles. Now while PS3 and WII cross platform games were developed for the next gen consoles basically being ports of the 360 version. So I would say its safe to compare games from both systems whether they be launch or a game released 1 year into the life cycle. Also cross platform games for the ps3 is coming up with craptastic reviews and complaints about less than stellar textures and more slowdown compared to the 360 version. I think this will be an ever continuing trend as well.

The 360 has been out for a year now and the PS3 hasn't even been out a month and when you compare a game for a system that has been out for a year then the same game for a system that isn't even a month old isn't fair. All the 360 is, is a computer; thats why more than half the time all the 360 gets are PC ports. usually when a game has slow downs, its not the system its the programers, since they have had more time programming for the 360 means they know how to handle its resources unlike when they made it for the PS3. Its just a sloppy programming job. plus the 360 has 1080p through ANALOG outputs which less then 15% of HD tvs except 1080p signals from an analog input; they mostly take them from digital input (HDMI).

Yet Sony tosses around that their game console IS a computer (even though it isn't), and you don't mention that in your clearly flawed argument? Oh wait, it's clearly flawed.

Remember when the Xbox came out? Graphically, what was it compared to? Was it compared to a PC? A PlayStation? N64? No, it was compared to the PS2, which had been out for over a year. And did it graphically trump the PS2? Why yes, yes it did.

And did it graphically trump the PS2? Why yes, yes it did. While that's true, the situation isn't really comparable here. Xbox essentially had pre-existing SDK support and developer talent because it's a stripped-down PC arch running a stripped-down Windows/DirectX. Xbox 360 and PS3 both represent a major departure from any previous console or PC design in various ways, so it should be expected that the learning curve is steeper and the refinement of SDK/libraries/middleware takes longer compared to a conventional architecture.

Graphics don't make games sell neither do they make them fun. You can play SNES RPG's and even though the graphics are dated the games are actually a lot of fun.
Realisticly the 360's architecture is very similar to a PC and that makes programming for most developers far easier, the PS3 on the other hand doesn't have development tools as good as the 360 and is new technology that's only been out a for a month in consumer hands and more than likely only 6 months or more for developers.
More time means better looking and more efficient game engines, time will tell.

I bought a 360 a few weeks ago, and just bought Gears of War on Sunday. Now, the game is absolutely, mindblowingly, ridiculously awesome looking. The best part, however, is the gameplay. If it looked terrific yet played like crap, no one would want it. Graphics make a game better, without question, and poor graphics make a game worse. They don't, however, directly effect longterm enjoyment or make a game replayable, classic, or a must-have.

360 developers have had over a year of experience Vs. PS3 developers with only max 6 months experience with the hardware.
You just can't compare it, programming skill and experience changes how efficient game engines are with the hardware at hand.

Come on guys I know it is a Sony forum but don't be fanboys :p
I don't know if anyone else read this but it was amongst the comments and I think it is pretty fair comparison.

Hello,
Ok first before I get flammed for this post I want to say that I can and I know how to talk about hardware. I build and design computers and picked up an xbox 360 because of its hardware and affiliation with PC gaming. Now in response to the post that the RSX acts as a secondary GPU its a false truth. The RSX is the GPU and has its own memory banks of 256 GDDR3 700MHz RAM. This ram is indpendent from the CPU ram because the cell can only address the 256 XDR 3.2Ghz ram. The cell is using that ram and only that 256 XDR because the memory controller is designed with the XDR ram in mind to keep each of the SPEs fed. Normal GDDR3 is too slow and lacks the bandwidth over a mobo to be useful.
Now is regards the cell as a GPU/CPU hybrid or something along those lines its now true the floating point score of the cell (well theoretical) is only 217 billion with the average modern GPU is closer to 750 billion. Also lets bang out some truths that arent well known:
-1 spe is disabled for production yield (7 remain)
-1 spe is locked down for security code(6 remain0
-1 spe is for sound (dolby digital not EAX, EAX would utilize multiple cores)( 5>= remain)
-The PPE is NOT and I repeat that NOT a general purpose processor -it is for ordering instructions for the 7 cores -IBM the creators of the Cell designed it this way and think that it should be utilized in this fashion
Now the system also is lacking very badly in system bandwidth from the CPU to GPU
-Xbox 360 bandwidth intensive rendering passes are being done within the 10DRAM daugterdie GPU this chip is the godsend of rendering because of its amazing ability to give free AA and AF and z stencling, etc....
-The 512MB unified is better because of the GPU differences and CPU differences in mem usage
-The Northbridge was built by ATI

Now also its important to note that the Cell CANNOT render and this is a major flaw. Its further good to note that the PS2 GPU Graphics Synthesizer was not a good GPU in any regard and yes it did have this as its GPU. Now the Nvidia 7 series is a good GPU my PC currently has one but its already outdated. The xbox 360 xenos is not even close to being outdated due to its daughterdie and unified shading architexture (part of DX10).

Now this was a short lesson on why the xbox 360 is the future of gaming and not the PS3 PS- If you have played Gears of War you realize that any other gaming platform including the PC doesnt come close.

Now in regards to the Quad core intel CPU its horrible its just a dual CPU Core 2 duo its like a Pentium D mistake all over again. The 2 cores communicate over the FSB. AMDs solution is gorgeous and makes a hell of alot more sense because of the 4 cores share a L2 cache and can communicate with one another inside the CPU. Oh and there is one more point to make that the John Carmack (if you dont know who he is in the gaming world you dont need to respond to this post) and Tim Sweeny have both said that the Xbox 360 has the best development tools ever created for a gaming system including the PC. This just goes to show all the Microsoft haters that MS really knows what they are doing and how to support their products."

I have always expected xbox would have a slight edge as far as power/graphics and they earned it and deserve some credit the 360 is amazing but it doesn't mean Sony doesn't have a good console either.
It doesn't really matter its about the games anyways! :)

I don't think you realise that graphics didn't put the PS2 first in sales, graphics do not make games fun and they haven't yet so stop basing everything on how powerful the hardware is.
Graphics enhances the experience of the game but in no way does it make a game better, people need to ask themselves this Why do you play games? if you only care about graphics then why not just watch the game instead.

I wonder why the PS2 still has more games produced for it and still sells even now that we've stepped into the 8th? gaming generation, graphics sure as hell isn't the reason.
I'm no fanboy, I'm just presenting the facts, both consoles are good consoles but at the end of the day the hardwares power never wins the console war, ever, it's been the same since the Atari days, did the Neo Geo beat the SNES and the Genesis in the early 90's? it was the most powerful out of them all but did it win? no, it failed miserably amongst gamers.

stop basing everything on how powerful the hardware is.The problem is that's exactly what Sony is doing. According to them, the next-gen of gaming did not start until Nov. 17th, and 720p isn't really HD. It's all about 1080p. Anything less isn't next-gen, hi-def gaming.

Any mention of game titles in all of there HD mumbo jumbo? No? Didn't think so.

Yes that is true but that's just the Sony HD propaganda, I don't think anyone really believe's that. lol
The whole fanboy arguement formula is "System X's power - System Y's power = the better system" Doesn't matter to me what one is more powerfull but what games they're going to get.
