Do you still think PS3 is overpriced??

Absolutely. $600 is too much for a box that plays games and movies. Period. And I don't care how much it costs to make.

I can see why they say that table is "preliminary".

Most of the core components don't jump out at me as being ridiculous, but I have a hard time swallowing an "I/O bridge controller" that costs more to manufacture than the EE+GS, not to mention more than the retail price of an entire budget PC mainboard. I'd sure love to see the specs on that sucker.

They have $148 worth of "other components and manufacturing", and then another line of "other components and manufacturing" for $2.50, and then another line for $39-40 of "manufacturing costs", none of these really specifying what actual components or processes they're talking about.

Pardon me if I don't take their numbers too seriously.

I'm thinking...

... ... ...

Yes, PS3 is overpriced...

But 'course I'll buy one... don't know when... maybe in two or three years... my wife and me were planning to have a baby... but I preffer a PS3... = )

Overpriced, yes. All new technology is. Think about the price on a top of the line graphics card. It is expensive because it's new and in demand. However, compare the price to units that just play blue ray DVDs. If you want the tech when it's new you have to pay.

Yea well of course it will be expensive, but I don't think it is overprice.

For now it seems like it, but it's not really over price, Considering what the originator of the thread displayed.

A blueray itself is more then a PS3, so it is a good price.

If blu-ray drive being released to the market i think the price of the drive would be $250-$300

there're blu-ray players on the market, and they're far more expensive than ps3 (1000-1200$), and ps3 does a better job playing BR discs than those players (according to ign)

I'll buy one too, but it's not worth the price until HDLoader works.

or MacOS X is able to run on it.

Although the price is already subsidized, $500 or $600 is high but I think people who want one will find a way to pay for it. It is, however, the investment risk for a $500-600 console. Typically, launch/early consoles haven't had the best track record for reliability.

With low launch numbers and the blu ray laser as a manufacturing bottleneck, one cannot help but to think that maybe Sony relaxed quality control to allow more machines to enter the market. The possibility of a premature laser burnout, among other possible defects, is a big deterrent to pick up a PS3 , should it repeat the history of its predecessor.

heh this is laughable...
Sony certainly doesn't make huge bucks out of the ps3 hardware but they're far from losing money out of it either.
Each time a console gets released, some 2cents analysts feel the need to do the counts when they have no idea what part costs what considering what volume, considering technology exchange deals between manufacturers etcetera.. etcetera
The figures in the table1 above are absolutely meaningless and DO come straight out of the author's clueless mind in the sense that sony themselves doesn't pay those amounts.

in the sense that sony themselves doesn't pay those amountsGood point. It's easy to forget that businesses don't necessarily make decisions based on the piece price, because they're ordering an entire production run, marketing campaign, hiring support staff, and so on. In the case of PS3 there are all sorts of further considerations that might be affecting prices, not least the fact that it's an early testbed for both Cell and Blu-Ray, products that could lead to huge profits for their manufacturers in other markets if PS3 proves that they're viable...

Look on the bright side the PS3 will keep you up all night without the drool and poo.

those prices are most likely OEM pricing. try buying a bluetooth adapter for that price or the video cards in question?

The major point that has pushed me towards buying one as soon as possible is the facts that....

1. HDD is swappable from the get go.
2. Is a computer (Linux)
3. The hacking community is hard at work cracking this baby open for homebrew like you can't believe.

And that baby slaughters the 360. Specs and features.

No console ever has. We returned the first Atari 2600 because of a bad contact in the cart slot. I've seen problems with NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, PS2, Xbox (mine won't read audio CDs from the store, I just got it last year), PS3, Wii, and 360. At least Sony isn't charging $140 to fix their mistakes.
