Youtube videos:
Fedora Linux on the PS3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnAn3h7kTM4)
The same w/ Voiceover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZXcuhJkwx4)
I don't have a PS3 so I can't play around with this. But I think this is how its done. If I'm wrong please correct me. :)
Get Fedora here:
http://fedora.redhat.com/
-Click Downloads and get PPC
Then here is the Sony side with a tutorial:
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html
Is this it?

How many bogus?
Do cat /proc/cpuinfo if you don't know how.

I tried downloading the ppc files off of the fedora site but damn... I was thinking that I only had to download only a few files. The site shows that I would need to get 6 iso files at 700mb each.
Not only would it take forever for me to get them since i'm on dialup, but I would have no idea how to even begin. I think I'll wait for the scene to release a guide or something. Not much for me to test here.

So, wait, what happened to Yellow Dog Linux on PS3?
Yes, I know YDL has been a port of redhat for years on end, but still?

That video could very well be fake. As far as I've read, yellow dog could still be the distro Sony will use: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/news/2006/2006-10-17.shtml
According to QJ.net, any distro that has a PowerPC build will work...
"Apparently, you can install ANY linux distro on your PS3 as long as it has a PowerPC build available"-Pranav

Fedora is a plausable OS for the PS3

Well if you guys have seen that youtube video, fedora on the PS3 is pretty much just like that... I worked with my friend for the past few hours and I have Fedora running on my PS3 now:dance:. It's kind of dissapointing how easy it was to do it actually. We just followed the steps on Sony's site and bam, Fedora.
The installation process was excruciating though. It took about 3 hours, no joke. I should have used my friends PC and tuner to do the install. It is really hard to read the installation questions on an old tv. I also had to run a cable from the router to the PS3 instead of using the wireless connection for the updates needed.
For some reason, wi-fi was just not cooperating. I'm going to give it a try at my place later on in the morning running in ad-hoc mode since I don't have an access point.
I also need to brush up on my linux because I was having a hard time remembering all the commands. I'm going to kinkos in the morning to print out my linux bible. Man I'm tired, we've been working on this since like 10pm and we didn't finish till like 3am today. I'm knocking out.
Did anyone try this yet?
http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/ubuntu-cdimage/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-powerpc.isosudo cat /proc/cpuinfo
or MacOS X?

damn seeing these things u guys posted made me drool of excitement. sony really impressed me implementing this feature, linux (fedora), on ps3. this is so cool. cant wait getting ps3 and trying this out. m$ must be upset right now not implementing this feature on their console,xbox360. they could use the window vista or xp as oppose to linux for ps3.

Honestly, Linux will be the key to cracking the PS3. I mean, the unrippable Blu-ray games were ripped within a week thanks to Linux. Imagine what more could be done with a little bit of time.
Microsoft is very happy for not including a computer OS.

Hey, there are backups out, but no one can play a backup game yet. I don't think that Linux will help us to get backups running on PS3 since it doesn't have such low level access to hardware (Cell processor has many "OS Levels", correct me if I'm wrong). I think cracking the PS3's firmware is the way to run backups on it. Just like PSP! Or maybe we'll have a modchip in some years.
I think Sony (and us, homebrew users) are very happy with the decision of including Linux support. I'm pretty sure lots of people are going to buy a PS3 and not a XBox 360 because it can run Linux and homebrew without a modchip.

no. the linux will help us cracking the ps3. but ure right linux is not the who will execute the games. and the ps3 firmware is more like the one to be crack. linux will be a tool for hacking purposes on ps3. ive heard a news on maxconsole that this one dude name deadsoulasis and his team are working a devhook like on ps3. he claims he was able to play ps3 games off his hd. but there some doubts about it. on he's nfo u need to reflash the BIOS and BR drive. he didnt say how u flash it but im guessin ur goin to use linux to flash ur existin bios. hope its real.:D
very true. many will buy ps3 because it runs linux. sony again think about linux user and this what great about sony. theyre thinkin ahead than other company like they done on new format... they jump to blue ray disc.

I tried to make an account at ydl.net but it asks for a coupon code even though I'm making a new account. Do you know where I can coupon code? I'll keep reading online in the meantime.

Ok, according to Terra Soft, YDL will be free once release to public mirrors. For now though, you need to pay $69.95 to be able to get it off of ydl.net. That coupon code is the code you get when you pay that fat cash. In the Terra Soft store, they even have PS3s for sale that come preloaded with YDL. Of course they don't have any instock right now
