PS3 Playing US PS2/PS1/DVD games on Japanese PS3 Console

Anyone know if there are any way to play US PS2/PS1 or USA DVDs on the Japanese PS3? I managed to get one but I'm stuck just playing Blue-Ray discs (movies and games). I'm just wondering if those DVD region or game region discs would work on the PS3.

I understand that they are locked but I was wondering if the old techniques used on the PS2/PS1 (with pre encoded region discs) would work on the PS3 or has any one tried it? Since it might be a while for a mod to come out to remove the region lock, I want to play some US games on my Japanese PS3 for the time being.

btw, at yahoo japan ps3 60gb version is sold around 500usd...no wonder sony put region lock on ps3 (at least on ps2 & ps1 games)
