What actually is the Sharkport/Xport cable?

Great forum been reading for a while with interest.

Hmm been having all sorts of problems with my ps2 lately. Just had the chip redone and the save transfer system I was using to my PC wont work (its called a Harder Drive 2, made by Joytech) as its light just flashes on and never gets recongized by the PC.

So I was thinking I have an AR2 disc here and the Xport software that I found somewhere on the net (codejunkies from memory), so I was wondering about the last piece of the puzzle. I was wondering whether a straight USB-USB (like the network linking cable in stores) could be used to transfer the saves across from my PC to my PS2 and vice versa.

Does anyone know whether the Sharkport/Xport cable is a powered USB cable or just a straight USB cable (ala doens't have the big box 1/2 way along it)?

its a usb-usb networking cable that has a pl-2301 or 2302 controller chip in it. this is usually the thingy in the middle.
if you are in the US, i have recently seen sharkports on sale at Circuit City for $20. just getting the cable itself would be around that much.

also you can use the USB/USB that have the sharkpor/xport to program in your PS2 using Naplink;)

yes, they are the same cable. however, last i used it, you had to install a different driver to use either one..

Thanks for that, hmm too bad I'm not in the US (I'm in Australia) or I would have gotten one. They are about $50US ($100 Aussie if you can find one) where I live. Hmm might have to see if I can pick up one of these cables cheaply!
