Hi all
Soon my slim ps2 will be fixed up and modded. But I want to be able to run ulaunch elf to run other stuff like sms (for watchin divx movies etc). My question is can I install ulaunch elf by some other method besides the "independence exploit" as I think it only works on the pre-v12 full size PS2's. For example, could I put it on a cd-r to either run from that or get it on to a memory card?

With a modchip you will be able to run a CD-R

I suspected as much, is it readily copyable to a memory card too? I've yet to acutally use ulaunch elf or sms.

u cannot use the exploit on a slim ps2. U could use other aproaches though. But it will involve buying an original cd of some kind.
go through a tutorial on burning homebrews to a cd-r and then pop in the cd and watch uLaunch elf load.. once loaded, copy the BOOT.ELF and LAUNCHELF.CNF to a folder called BOOT(create folder) on your MC... then search for a file called LOAD.RAR on this forum and burn the loader and all other homebrews that you need to a cd-r the same way you burned uLaunchELF... Watch uLF load from the MC!

My Gear:
Slim PS2, Matrix infinity & PS2600 skin
V9, Matrix infinity, Net adaptor, Blue Chrome skin
Look in this thread (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45515) to get some help on creating a bootable cd. I attached a ready to burn iso in one of my posts. And take a look at broodje's signature. There's a good tutorial for the Matrix Infinity right in the first line.
BTW, you already have a MI in your V9? And you still don't use launchelf or sms? Then it's really time to get started! Your PS2 is much more than a game-machine! And your chip can do more than launch backups! Welcome to the great world of homebrew!:D
