I have a DMS3 chipped ps2(non-slimline). I am currently running HDL .07c from a cd-r.

I have read that cd-rs are hell on the ps2 laser and would like to find a workaround. I have read that you are able to put an elf on a mc or hdd and boot software from that. I think it would be ideal to load it from the hdd, no laser damage and also no space taken from the ps2 memory card.

I have searched the forum and have read that you must be able to burn your own elf's before asking for any help. My question is will ulaunchelf be able to satisfy what I need?

I have also read that ulaunchelf is able to ftp things to and from your computer. Is this true? Does it carry info over the ethernet port?

Thank you.

Yes, yes, and yes. Go to a support forum for your chip to get information on what you want to do. It can boot an elf from the MC and HDD. Also, 200-300 KB isn't really that much on an 8 MB MC. You may choose this method since it is a faster than booting from the HDD (no need to load HDD IRX).

ok, so I am searching for elf installation info on the dms3 website. I can't find anything specific. I will continue searching that and google, but if you have any ideas and it's not against forum rules maybe you could post a link or maybe pm it to me?

Thanks

Edit: I found this in an article about DEV mode on the dms3.

"When the PS2 is first turned on or reset, if the Triangle button is held down DMS3 will enter Dev.olution Mode. DMS3 will attempt to load the ELF "mc0:\BOOT\BOOT.ELF". This ELF is reserved for DMS3 Explorer, which is the menu system used for Dev.olution Mode.

DMS3 Explorer has the ability to automatically install applications onto the memory card when a CD/DVD disc containing an install script is placed in the drive and the Select button on the first controller is pressed. The install script is a very basic format."

I think all I need to do now is figure out how to make an elf, which is essentially a ps2 bootable disc right? Or does the bolded selection imply that I could just throw the ulauncher file on a cd-r and Devmode would install it?

An .ELF is executable like an .EXE. You just need to place it in BOOT folder on your MC. You can get LaunchELF as BOOT.ELF from this main thread on this forum (actually use cBOOT.ELF, it is compressed to save MC space, and rename to BOOT.ELF). Your best way to copy BOOT.ELF is probably to use LaunchELF itself on a bootable CD. There are many tutorials on how to make such a CD (use CDGen v3 I believe), or you may find an image that is already prepared for download.
