Hi guys,

I have a Pal v9 PS2 (scph - 50004) with a Magic V 50k onboard. I've run into a little problem. I used to have a CD burner (sold it) and got a DVD burner (Sony DRU-810A). The problem is I cannot burn any CDs lower than 12x. The MAXIMUM LOWEST burnable speed possible on my DVD burner is 12x and I have burned 8 to 10 PS2 discs and my PS2 isn't comfortable in reading/booting them. I tried SMS and Gameshark 2 v4. My copy of Gameshark 2 v4 works perfectly fine, which I had burned using my CD burner at 4x. I had also burned PS2 Reality Media Player and it worked AWESOME.

But since I don't have my old CD burner anymore and can't burn any CDs lower than 12x on my current DVD burner, I was thinking may be I could just make a bootable DVD with SMS.ELF, SYSTEM.CNF, etc, etc WITH THE .AVI files on the DVD itself ?? My PS2 is totally comfortable with DVD-Rs available here and I have burned quite a few PS2 games working perfectly fine on my PS2.

So, is it possible to make a bootable SMS DVD with .avi files ???

Thanx in advance. Desperately waiting for a reply :D

There is a method to make the PS2 read burnt DVD's with AVI files in SMS, but that's for non-modded consoles, unlike yours.

Anyway, if u can't burn CD's and u seem to know how to make a bootable CD (with all the correct files I mean) why not try to burn a DVD-R with all the files to boot SMS and the AVIs? Since u have a modchip there shouldn't be problems with the PS2 not recognizing the Disc.

Well the method I know of to make a SMS bootable CD is as follows....

You should have two files called SYSTEM.CNF and SMS.ELF. Use notepad or wordpad to edit SYSTEM.CNF so that it reads the following...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SMS.ELF;1
VER = 1.00
VMODE = PAL/NTSC

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Save it and then open up CDGENPS2 v3.0 and drag and drop all the files into CDGENPS2.

A point to note is:
1. Setting the LBA of SYSTEM.CNF to fixed at 12231 when creating your disc image.
(right click on SYSTEM.CNF, choose EDIT, tick the box ?Fix LBA?, change the number.
2. It also seems to be better to add this file to the compilation first,
3. Then the .ELF you want to use.
4. Add an optional dummy files and folders after this.

Click on ?IMG?, and choose a name for the file and save to your desktop as ISO or BIN&CUE. The of course use Nero or Alcohol to burn this image up.

Now what I don't seem to understand is WILL THIS SAME PROCEDURE WORK FOR DVDrs ??? Any help will be greatly appreciated :D

Edit: Also will CDgenps2 work for DVDs ?? I also have Sony's CDDVDGenerator 1.5. Don't really know how to use it or what it does :P

yes it should work the same for DVD's.

it will only cost you 50c worth of plastic and reflective foil coated with dye to find out though.

This is how i make bootable DVD.

I take the sms.elf and rename it to example SLUS_204.66
Then I find myself a ps2 game and take the system.cnf from a game and copy it to same folder as SLUS_204.66.

I open the system.cnf in notepad and change the SLUS value in the system file with SLUS_204.66

Then I open $ony cd/dvd creator and choose DVD Mastering disc.
I add the files + 1 gig of dummy and put in name SLUS_204.66

Then i do BURN ISO. Then i get error and i do EXPORT IMAGE.

Now, i choose name, example, SMS and there will be 3 files called
SMS.000 , SMS.001 and SMS.002 that it export

Then i open DOS and type copy /B SMS.000 + SMS.001 + SMS.002 SMS.ISO
And then i open NERO or some other tool and burn the IMAGE.

Now, this disc will boot on ANY console like a normal game (as long as it can boot backups)

Also works with swap magic.

just follow steps and threat as a PS2 game using sony dvdrom generator, rename SMS.elf as SLUS/SLES deppending on what console you have (ntsc/pal) eg SLUS_696.69 then edit the SYSTEM.CNF to boot with this file, then add up to 6 std movies (700megs) complete the layout window with that SLES file and number and export iml....than IML2ISO and thats it, burn that ISO and will be bootable if your PS2 is capable to boot game backups

IMO the simpliest method to do bootable DVD with any homebrew app is to use Nero.
Just make new compilation of type DVD (UDF/ISO), and the add to it file SYSTEM.CNF (made as written in the #3 post) and the elf file (+ other files eg. movie(s)). Then burn it with slowest possible speed (2x, 4x). Works great with my modded v9.

i think that depends on the modchip, subzero.

Hey guys! I'm just now new to the SMS scene so I'm not too fresh with how all works with this nice application. I have 2 modded consoles(MI & Crystal Chip) with also 2 different HDD's(120GB Maxtor & 80GB Seagate). I'm wanting to transfer the SMS application to the HDD's for playing movies(AVI files). Do I use a program like WINHIIP or HD_Dumb to transfer the ELF file to the HDD's to run the movies? I think I can make a bootable DVD for playing the movies but what about transferring the ELF file to HDD so I can play the movies from the HDD? I guess what exactly what I'm asking is what program(if any) can I use to get the ELF launcher onto either the HDD's or MC for my modded consoles so I can run or play my AVI movie files other than via DVD bootable disc? I have read the guide thouroughly but I am somewhat confused on what process to use for my intentions. I don't think there is an application to transfer my AVI files directly to HDD from PC but what about just getting the SMS Media Player onto HDD for running instead of a DVD disc? Thanks guys!

I don't really understand ur problem, but I guess u're trying to copy SMS ELF and movies to HDD, so u can just use uLaunchELF or FTP methods, both very well explained in the Manual...

I really am not interested in setting up a FTP network for transferring that way. I guess what I want is the uLaunchELF onto the HDD for playing the files. I must have missed something in the manual because I am not clear on how to get it done via the uLaunchELF method. I have since previous post made a SMS bootable MP3 CD that is playable. I have all the options when using the disc but there is a uLaunchELF error message located at the top of the screen saying "Unable to launch uLaunchELF". Anyhow, I didn't need the uLaunchELF with this bootable disc. I checked all the mp3 files & they play flawlessly but I need to get a better understanding of the uLaunchELF thing. I have a zipped version of uLaunchELF do I need to take the Boot.ELF file & do something with that file to get it to HDD? Don't bash me here because I have a lot to do & may have just mis-read the manual thingy. I would just appreciate some guidance on what to do with the uLaunchELF.zip archive as far as making something to transfer to HDD/MC. Both of my modchips support ELF files so that's not a question. Thanks guys!

Edit: I read thru the manual better & now see that there is no application/program to transfer files to HDD other than transferring via bootable disc with uLaunchELF. I really don't wanna use the consoles tray drives to transfer to HDD's due to extra wear & tear on the lasers(hence why using HDD for playing games). I guess I'll just make me a bootable DVD with SMS & play a few AVI movie files in this manner until there is an application for transferring files to HDD from PC. Thanks for the time Furatudo for responding to my questions! I just get busy & see some things like this nice media player & get myself confused somewhat. Thanks again for your time.

I think MI chips have Dev Mode, u should be able to use Dev to launch homebrew, so u can use it to launch uLaunchELF and from uLaunchELF u cna launch any other elf file (including SMS).
I can't really help u on this cause I dont have a MI but maybe BigMichiel cab, he has Dev Mode enabled in his PS2 with MI modchip.

yes, you can use MI to boot from dev1/dev2

MI = DEV1 [case sensitive] (after placing ELF in location, hold corresponding button on reboot)

Triangle = mc0:/MATRIXTEAM/MANAGER.ELF
R1 = mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF
R2 = mc0:/BOOT/BOOT2.ELF
L2 = mc0:/BOOT/BOOT3.ELF

MI = DEV2 [case sensitive] (after placing ELF in location, hold corresponding button on reboot)

L1 = hdd0:__boot/boot.elf

DEV1 BOOT.ELF 2-3 req. firmware v1.68+

DEV2 boot.elf req. firmware v1.5+

go download the CD image from http://sms.ps2-scene.org

comes with such a file browser to manage files on HDD, mc, USB, network... and of course, SMS.

SMS can copy movies to your HDD from the network. you have to use RadHostClient on the PC for SMS to connect to i think... then there's a circle button option when you browse the file in SMS for 'copy to HDD'

edit: oops. i misread your post. i thought you wanted a way to get the movies onto the HDD... not the ELF.
anyway, once you booted ulaunchelf off a CD/DVD, use it to copy itself to one of the above mentioned locations so you can run it in DEV mode.

Edit 2: just so you know, uLaunchELF is not a part of SMS, it is a little file manager/browser and program launcher that many people here use to boot other PS2 ELF files with... remember back in the days with PC's with those old DOS style menus? that's sorta what ule is about... and the easiest way to copy uLaunchELF onto your memory card is using... uLaunchELF!

it's included on the SMS CD Image for convenience... so that people can update SMS by copying the new version to the Memcard from a USB stick, rather than burn a new CD each time it is updated. (and it's just so darn useful). in the ZIP you downloaded, there will be a file called BOOTc.ELF. (the c is for 'compressed'). this is the file you should copy to your memory card... rename it to BOOT.ELF, and put it into your memory card in a directory named BOOT. (that's where most modchips boot DEV mode from)

Edit3: someone sent me a private message regarding a very interesting way to copy stuff fast to the HDD without needing to burn a disc... just make a bootable disc image with uLaunchELF on it, include all the files you want to copy on that image, install it to HDLoader with your PC using winHIIP or similar tool, then run it... once in uLaunchELF, you can then copy your movies from CDFS (the CD Image that HDLoader has mounted) to a normal HDD partition... it's a roundabout way, but maybe good if you have no network and are very sensitive about your laser...

Edit4: personally, HDD is overrated... too much stuffing around. you might consider just using network streaming or a USB PenDrive/iPod/external HDD in SMS.
