Any suggestions?

From standby with any game in drive, hold down the reset until blue light comes on.

Does it go to the original playstation logo (it may be corrupt if it was not a psx disk in the drive).

I know this seems a bit vague but if it did and you are happy with all installed wires it will probably be a problem with the laser due to the age of the console.

I have had a couple of v5's that did this but they did the same thing with known good laser units.

Other consoles I have had that display a sharp clicking when the disk is first read all worked ok (no clicking) with a known good laser unit.

BTW.. If your magic is an original bought version then is will almost certainly be the laser. If it is a HomeBrew it could be a quirky console with the beta code. Not seen this on v3's though only the v5.

Hope this helps.

Thenks.

I installed before the magic3 chip messiah chip but still the same thing. So you say it is the laser unit. Any other suggestions?

This is not the best way to do this but...

If you have a Multimeter you could dissconnect the laser unit from the rest of the console. Turn it over to expose the under side of the laser unit.

You will be able to see 2 small pots used to calibrate the laser unit.

Each pot has two connection points on the bottom and one connection point on the top.

You will be testing across the bottom two of each pot.

Set your multimeter to ohm's and around 2k since you will be expecting a reading of 1220.

Using a plastic tool trim the pots to around 1100, the lower you go the more power to the laser BUT!!!! the lower you go the more damage you are doing (reducing its life).

Make a note of the original setting and put them back after a test.

Read Charlie_ps2's guide in the FAQ section for a better explanation and usable safe settings.

Some places now sell laser eye replacements but I personally would buy a new ps2 and keep the old for spares the prices they are charging for them. Suppose it depends on what a new ps2 costs where you live.

I already trimmed the pots to that value but no change. I vould by a new ps2 if it would be mine but it is not. That's the problem why i'm trying to fix it.
Will read the faq.

Have you resolved your lasers problems? I know very vell this problem, you have the optical pickup very dirty! (not clean). the optical pickup have two lens, one lens up, one lens down, a 45° mirror, another little mirror. They are not clean, it is normal on v3 models of ps2 after 1 year. I know as clean it, I'm preparing a words documents. Clean the optical pickup without istructions is very dangerous! in seconds you can destroy the dvd diode only with electrostatical energy!
don't touch your laser trimmers !!!!!

Can you send me the instructions how to clean the optical pickup?
