does it support writing/reading 48bit HDD with patchedhdloader0.7c?

If your question is whether or not uLaunchELF uses the 48bit hdd modules, then yes it does just like the original LaunchELF.

thanks, but when I run it it can only see two partitions: boot and hdloadersettings
I suspect it could need 'mounting', I'm a newbie so could you clarify what exactly needs to be done for it to see the whole hdd?

Nothing special should need to be done, if the partitions have been properly created.
What other partitions do you have, that you expect to be visible ?
HDLoader game partitions are intentionally hidden, as they do not use the standard APA filesystem, used to store normal files on a PS2 HDD. Since those partitions are therefore useless for LaunchELF file operations, they are simply not displayed. (Having them displayed would make it harder to find the useful ones in these listings.)

aha! I see.. thats what I was expecting to see (games partitions). I was afraid that not displaying them would mean it could not access the whole HDD. thanks for clarifying that.
BTW, I used winhiip to create some partitions it offered _boot and some others. Should I make a new partition for programs or can I just put them in _boot ? What program do I use for creating partitions on PS2; dmsformat doesn't work and IIRC ulaunch doesn't have that option or does it? (not at PS2 right now)
would it be safe to create it with myps2?

You can, but there are some reasons why you may want to avoid that. For one thing, mod-chips with Dev2 support will use this partition for it. I've also heard that Sony HDD software for PS2 has some reserved usage of it.
But the latter is something I can only know by hearsay, as Sony never release such software for european consoles.
(Scared of european hackers, I guess... ;))
Fortunately I see no need for Sony's HDD software, because the functionality offered by homebrew software is more useful to me.

LaunchELF does not have any such routines, but you should be able to use a patched version of 'DMS HDD Format'. The original only supports 28-bit LBA, which is why it failed for you. You need to find the one patched for 48-bit LBA.
It's somewhere on this site, so just search for: 48-bit patched HDD tools
That should give you the relevant thread at the top of the search results.

I've no idea, but considering how new this software is, we have to assume that some things still need testing. At least check with the author or others in the myPS2 forum that it does support 48-bit LBA.
