http://rapidshare.de/files/11214430/SMS_Lang_English.txt.html
Translate all string respecting as possible the length of string.
Rename the file ( SMS_Lang_English.txt -> SMS_Lang_your-language.txt )

cool, I check it out later this night for the dutch translation;)

You mean that you can't use more letters than there are? Cause that's kinda problem for me
edit: Most words are a bit longer in dutch than the english versions of them.
Bixente
01-19-2006, 12:59 PM
Yep.
Please try to respect strings length as possible ( cause of menu, player menu and "Available media" ).
Use "truncated word" ( abreviation in french :) ) for these strings, if that's possible. ;)
For other strings there isn't any restriction ( don't exagerate ;) )
Good luck :D
And thank's to everybody helping me.

Hey, great work with the SMS player, I love it!
As some others allready have, I wanted to contribute with a translation aswell. Here is a Swedish translation, that I have taken time and effort to translate as correctly as I can.
I hope it's good enough.
keep up the goodwork! :)

Big problems translating if the strings cant be longer than the english one. Im looking at the swedish translation here, and looks like strings are bigger on that one too. I was about to do a norwegian translation, but no point since i have to "trunacate" words so much it just look stupid.
Furatudo
01-25-2006, 09:33 AM
Yeah, that can be really problematic. I had to trunkate some words too for the Portuguese version, the letter were all of the 'window' in the 'about' menu. But maybe u can do it with a little work ;)
@all: ...I would propose to stop SMS "internationalization" till I'll be ready with updated graphics stuff (image quality seems to become better indeed (at least that blue balls in the browser look nicer (less "pixelated", I would say))). That will avoid work duplication. And here things turned up so that I'm rewriting the whole program from scratch (except codecs) (now I'm busy with browser stuff) :D, so it would take some time to finish it. From the other side if you feel OK with current version then I'm taking my words about stopping "internationalization" back :)...

I tried my best to translate as short as possible but allso as correctly as possible. But like other users say, some words can't be as short as the english ones.
...I've also implemented resizeable font, so it will be possible to "squeeze" strings to fit them into certain area (and also make bigger subs :)), so, do not hurry, please...

No prblem, I'm still in vacation, so I cannot make the spanish part...
BigMichiel
01-25-2006, 12:56 PM
they can be longer;) as long as it fits on the menu. I was having problems with the dutch translation to, but I have a dutch test version right now and everything seems ok. Well, most of mine strings are longer than the english ones.

hmmm... complete rewrite EEUG? Do I smell v1.6? :p
Anyway, from what I've seen, bix64's multilang and IPConfig Editor support is already fully implemented, so there shouldn't be a problem about releasing it as 1.5 rev4 ;)
@Furatudo: ...well, for users it will be almost exactly the same. Internally it will be new :)...

Hi all.
I've rewrited the multi language stuff to load language from file in mc. :)
In this way it will be easy to modify language. ;)
So, this option will be released in ~1 month, when EEUG will finished his work on full resolution implementation.
Thanks to all, for translations, and don't be afraid your work is not lost.
I've convert all translation to new sms language file.
Thanks again. ;)

Nice to hear. I can hardly wait for the next release :)
@all: ...it's not a problem for me at all to make a new release right now (1.5 Rev.3) + multilanguage support. I'm just not sure if it makes any sense, since everything beside multilanguage stuff will remain exactly the same as it is right now. Thank you, Bixente !!! :)...
Bixente
01-30-2006, 05:26 AM
@EEUG: multilanguage isn't an important update, so there is no problem to wait for a major improvement of SMS to released my work ( multilang and ipconfig ) ;). It isn't so hard to wait... ;) Bye.

For what I saw, it deserves to be v2.0
Multilang support should be implemented after new version because menu change a bit, so there is no need to write it twice ;)
btw, valid values for IP netmask are 0, 128, 192, 224, 240, 248, 252, 254 and 255 per octet

SMS 2.0 sounds nice! :D :p J/K
Anyway, I still don't see a problem about releasing MultiLang as rev4 or even just as an "unofficial" patch (not that it bothers me much since I already have the latest ML build anyway) and including MultiLang support on the upcoming version too. But like I said, it doesn't bother me much... and if someone wants to translate rev3 to their language that can easily be done just by editing the source code, so...

The Spanish translation. I hope the entry has the right length. If it is not, please let me know.
Good job
Mr. Worm~~
02-07-2006, 08:50 PM
Thank you for your efforts, but multilanguage will be made in the following way:
2 options from SMS Menu: English and "Other language", first is default and the second will be a txt file (notepad editable) read from MC:/SMS dir with more lines and uses the character set defined in SMS menu...as simple as that...Remember also that this file is changing a bit every day for adjusting, sorting items, etc...so the suggestion is to stop translations until final one is done, so do the translation only once and as wish ;)

While everyone is in the mood for translating, the user manual is open for translation too - so far it's only in english and portuguese - any other languages are welcome.
Instructions for how to add a translation are in the source tree in docs/README.maintainers (http://svn.ps2dev.org/filedetails.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2Fdocs%2FREADME.maintainers&rev=0&sc=0) (at bottom of the file).
The current user manual is here: http://www.daveandzoe.plus.com/sms/sms_usermanual.html. I'd be grateful for any new translations, and so would your fellow countrymen! :) Even partial translations help, if you don't have time to do the whole thing.

Just curious can languages such as Japanese which do not use the English alphabet be translated in this manner? I mean the characters used often are in a different encoding, may consist of multibyte characters and require a font that contain all the characters used in Japanese.
I'm guessing that would be a bit of a challenge to support unless there is some existing code and font to handle this. Unless all the translations are stored as images.

In fact one user is already complaining about lack of support for Korean characters, and that's just one of many languages requiring multibyte support.
I'm guessing that would be a bit of a challenge to support unless there is some existing code and font to handle this.
The only thing of this kind that I'm aware of having been ported to the PS2 is the ELISA font used by uLaunchELF to display japanese game titles. But of course, this can only handle some 'Kana' syllables, not 'Kanji' pictograms.
I'm sure all the asian game developers have excellent tools for handling such things on a PS2, but unfortunately they are not going to share those tools with us.
Unless all the translations are stored as images.
You mean constructing our own translator programs, to produce those images...?
If so, then forget it. That is a HUGE project in its own right, and not something that can easily be added as a side project of a 'simple' media player.
The best option here is to look for some existing freeware implementation of multibyte character fonts, and try to port the code handling them, for use with SMS.

hello everybody,
how i put sms 1.6rev6 in french, i have a file sms-lng.fr ?
titoun if u have a file like that the it means that sms is already translated in french or if you translated that file urself then post it here..
titoun
03-29-2006, 08:53 AM
OK, i think that just rename this file sms-lng.fr in sms-lng.fr.txt and tranfert this file with ftp in the same directory who contains sms.elf...?
Furatudo
03-29-2006, 01:36 PM
That language file seems outdated, get the latest FR language file from the language pack in EEUG's site:http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/SMS_lng.rar.
Then rename the file to SMS.lng and put it in your memory card in the mc0:/SMS/ folder.
Go to the options menu in SMS and change the language (I'm not sure in which submenu u can find this option).
That should do it ;)
But nonetheless a section about the language files should be dded to the user manual, I just realized it is not there.

transfer to the SMS directory on your MEMORY CARD
BigMichiel
03-30-2006, 01:22 PM
just to make it clear to me. The sms directory on the memorycard is where he saves all his settings or where to load settins. Things like Background, Language and in the history the USBD.IRX Am I right? So I guess maybe someone can implent more directory's where it seeks for saved files. Or an options that you want to save everything to hdd/memorycard/usb or even load from cd. (as far as I know there isn't any)
rathunter
03-30-2006, 01:59 PM
Given the small size of the settings file, and the performance disadvantage it would be to load it from HDD or USB, I doubt someone will implement additional directories. The HDD & USB IRXs would need to be loaded and the filesystems mounted, just to check if the files are present. MAYBE it makes sense to load a large background from the HDD or USB, but there would still need to be path to that file stored on the memory card (so time isn't wasted looking for a file that isn't there). But really, these SMS background files are already smaller than a typical PS2 gamesave, so I think it is easy to set aside enough space on the memory card for them. I like to look at my background while SMS is loading, not the other way around, if that makes sense.

Here you have. The lines incorporated with 1.9 (i think) start with '?' which you should remove during translation.
