Prevetik! First off, ochen krutaya programa... spasibo, EEUG! :)
CDDAFS
A friend of mine has an un-modded slim PS2. The only way I saw to make it easy on him was to go with the CDDAFS method of playing a movie.
I grabbed the package with CDXplorer and went to town! I downloaded three small video trailers from Divx.com (http://www.divx.com/movies/?src=toptab_movies_from_/index.php) and dragged'n'dropped them to make my BIN/CUE. Burned with Disc-at-once/96 right from within Nero 7.
Unfortunately, either the PS2 cannot read the CDDAFS trick on little 8CM CDs (http://www.universal-ml.de/we_img/8cm_CD.jpeg), or I made a mistake somewhere. (For the record, the PS2 has no problem reading 8CM CDs for things like LaunchELF, etc.) After reading the manual, it said that the CD would just be un-playable in a PC and you would hear static for the audio tracks, this is exactly what happens... but on the PS2! It seems to not be booting the CD at all, and just treats it like an audio CD.
The only thing I did was replace the older SMS.elf that came in the package with the newest (1.5 as of this writing) version. Did the later revisions of SMS drop the trick support?
The bottom line is, I want to make my friend a simple CD with a movie that he could easily play by just putting the CD in his un-modded PS2.
DVD-R Trick
The other question was pertaining to this ("http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=40624)("How to make a readable (no swap) media DVD disc") thread: I have not tried to burn it yet, but where does the SMS.elf file go? Or is SMS.elf one of the dummy files (re-named to one of the VOB files for execution)? I wanted to know if this was basically the same as the above trick (CDDAFS), but with a DVD-R instead of a CD-R?
HDD
I have a slim PS2 myself, but I have mine not only chipped, but also fitted with the HDD mod (XBC HDconnect). Is there support for this? I do not have a memory card, and would like to keep everthing loaded off the HDD. Movies, skins, settings, etc. Is this possible? Is it as simple as making a specific partition name (SMS?) on my HDD and sticking in all my movies and SMS files there? All the things I have read (most recently being the custom skins, which were shown to be loaded from MC only?) have had a memory card used, or detachable USB drive/pendrive. Is there support for the V12 HDD mod?
Also, if possible, could someone reply with a simple walk-through for creating a custom name partition? I think WinHIIP supports this, but I got confused the last time I looked at that screen... :(
Thanks in advance,

HDD
... I do not have a memory card, and would like to keep everthing loaded off the HDD. Movies, skins, settings, etc. Is this possible? I asked about hdd0:/ support too. But i don't think it's easy to implement. If someday this support is added to SMS, it would be better for skins support and also another place to put the USBD.IRX file.
Anyway, SMS is fantastic. It's becoming better and better after each release.
...for HDD we have a maze of partitions etc. I'm trying to keep SMS as independent as possible from any "extra" devices, so anyone who can launch "3rd party" .elfs can also use SMS (without modchips etc.) (keeping files on MC is most universal solution, so anyone can use it). Well, for "slim" versions there, probably, must be a modchip installed. I'm really doubting that PS2 can read 8cm CD's (refer official PS2's manual about it). For DVD-video disks there're no tricks. You just create an ordinary DVD-video disk with a short clip (to get it "authorized" by PS2) and you can put any extra files on it in any folder...

@FSB-SPY: in case the HDD for the slimline PS2 isn't supported in SMS u and ur friend can still use some kind of USB device (u will need the usbd.irx file to enable USB support in SMS) or the DVD-R Trick, I find it easier to use than the CDDAFS method. But keep in mind that these DVD's won't work on most DivX players ;)
Also, if possible, could someone reply with a simple walk-through for creating a custom name partition? I think WinHIIP supports this, but I got confused the last time I looked at that screen...
Try this (http://www.dms3.com/dms3/files/chips/DMS3_Tools/dms-hdd-format-1_1.zip). It is easy enough to use, I don't think there is need for a walkthtrough. ;)

HDD works for me with Reality Player but SMS doesn't recognise my harddrive. So SMS is not supporting HDD? I also use a v12 slimline.

SMS has HDD support for v0-11 PS2's, that's for sure.
Dunno about the v12 HDD mod but if ps2reality can find it then maybe it's some bug in SMS... =/

@EEUG, so here is the question... the original thread mentions that all I do is simply add my avi (divx/xvid) onto the DVD-R, right? But nowhere does it mention the SMS.elf file. So does this mean that it's not really making a self-bootable DVD-R with SMS in it? Do I need to get into SMS first, and then swap in this DVD-R I made? (Which would obviously be pointless for my friend, since he has a slim ps2 and all the exploits seem to have been patched out.)
And in the manual, you had commented on how it was possible at creating a CDDAFS using a DVD? Did I read that correctly? All I need to do is keep dragging files into CDXplorer application and then burn the BIN/CUE onto a DVD?
@ALL: It's a real shame about the HDD support for the slimline, but I suspect that once TOXiC OS .4 rolls out, it will be real easy to place SMS onto HDD and then hopefully having the program (SMS) recognize the HDD properly. V12/13 models currently do not have full support for HDD setups; I suspect this is the case on why certain programs will not work (DMS Format/Browser come to mind).
@Furatudo: Yeah, as I just said, unfortunately due to some people having the 'new' HDD setup (slimline + soldered HDD contacts), most programs that run on the PS2 that have to do with HDD are incompatible for now. Toxic OS .4 will hopefully have full support for the v12 HDD.
P.S. The 8CM CD's do work for booting other homebrew stuff (LaunchELF, DMS HDD[doesn't work, but boots fine off the CD]). I am about to burn with a regular CD-R and test yet again at making my CDDAFS with Divx clips. *Crosses fingers* :)
@FSB-SPY: CDDAFS is just a "filesystem" on an CD audio disk. DVD-Video disk is just a DVD-Video disk (that with VIDEO_TS folder and .vob/.ifo files in it) not an ISO DVD. Both (CDDAFS disks and DVD-Video disks) can be read (not booted) on an unmodded PS2 (like mine). Launching .elfs, booting CDs/DVDs are things out of SMS's scope. No warranty that SMS will work always (slimline models, USB devices etc.), since I just don't have an equipment to test (and, probably, will never have). It's an open-source hobby project, so I'll be glad to see if someone will add hardware and other feature support you're interested in :). Thank you for your understanding...

So an un-modded, slimline PS2 cannot run SMS (and video files) using the CDDAFS method you made with CDXplorer? I am confused... :(

Like you said, the exploit does not work on the slimline. You'll need to mod it, if you want to run homebrew, like SMS.
Reading media is a separate issue from booting media. The PS2 blocks access to the CDVD drive for unathenticated ISO disks. Tricks using audio-CDs and video-DVDs are how SMS gets gets access to AVIs on a CD/DVD-R. But it won't help run an ELF.
Check out Dave T's great manual, in the sticky thread.

I think it is something in SMS system because now when I try to stream movies from my computer to ps2 no network is found but network is found with execFTP.

@FSB-SPY: Are you running an exploit first and launching SMS, or simply putting your CDDAFS CDR in the drive and pressing reset?
The CDXplorer does not create a CD-R which you can boot from. It just creates a disc that can be read once sms is running. CDDAFS is not a method to launch SMS, it is a method to provide files to SMS once SMS is running. As far as I know there is no way to 'boot' sms off a CD, DVD-R or any other removable media. You always need either:
An exploit
A mod chip
To run SMS first... and THEN you put in your CDDAFS disc, DVD-R or whatever. In many cases, SMS.elf will need to be put on the memory card, then an exploit will be used to launch sms from the memory card.
Sorry if i'm misunderstanding you here.

@chiyute: I believe the network setting is set to OFF by default, so you need to enable it on the new version.
@dave_t: Thank you! Yes, I was simply pressing reset and had my hopes of using the CD to boot into SMS. I had thought that the "exploit" was the fact that my PS2 would think it is an audio CD and thus run the hidden un-signed code (SMS program). But now I see it's only half an exploit, and without having a method of getting into SMS, it is really pointless to be making these CD's for my friend who owns an un-modded slimline.
Personally, I run a slimline as well, but with DMS4Pro and HD-Connect; but it seems that I am in the minority here when I asked about HDD support (v12 HDD is different slightly than v11 and below it appears). My best bet is to simply buy a memory card at this point I guess.
Right now I simply boot into LaunchELF program via CD, and then pop in a CD with SMS.elf to get into SMS itself. And then I could easily just create a CD/DVD with avi files on it to play, not even requiring me to making it in the CDDAFS format (since I have mine modded and can run homebrew code).
@ALL: Thank you guys and sorry for the confusion! It was all just a big misunderstanding on my part. :)
P.S. Great manual. Thank you for your hard work and can't wait to read up on the skins/fonts sections!

@fsb-spy: PM me if you can get the streaming working. I have enabled the network in SMS of course.
All this messing around have made my hd-connect confused. It doesn't recognise my harddrive anymore :| I hope it is nothing serious.
