Boot manager/boot button combinations?

Sorry, but I'm a real newbie when it comes to actually using a modchip, and I can't seem to find any documentation on this forum or on the Crystal-chip website about using a boot manager or boot button combinations.

Is a boot manager only for those with the HD installed? I do not have a hard drive, so perhaps I only need to use the button combinations to force startup in a certain mode?

If so, could anyone either tell me the force mode options or point me to some documentation that does?

Could anyone elaborate? Thanks in advance for your help!

you download bootmanager
burn to cd
put in ps2 and it will come up with menu "flash chip" Install boot manager"
so install boot manager on memory card
not sure what chip your using but dev 1 will boot boot manager or if you have crystal it should start automatically
from here you can install apps off cd like sega and nintendo emulators etc
or play different region dvds etc
