It looks great to me. I think I cancel the sms website, cause there isn't need for it anymore. Everything, but I mean like actually EVERYTHING is explained in this forum, and now in you manual. Now I can focus more on my school without having to think about the website. Looking good Dave_t!

Thanks
@all: small correction - http://ps2dev.org/ps2/Projects DOES NOT CONTAIN LATEST VERSION (at least I didn't put it there). It's rather messy at ps2dev and versions are changed quite frequently, so, I've abandoned the idea of polluting ps2dev's site. Otherwise it's quite cool manual. Thank you :)...

Hmm, yes, i was wondering what is the next most important thing to add. So far, there are these outstanding items:
How to create subtitle files
How to create skins
How to create fonts
I was kind of hoping that someone might submit some fonts for download in various character sets - that way each user wouldn't have to go to the trouble of creating their own. There must be a legal way of doing this.
The popularity of the manual is growing vastly. It now gets over 100 hits per day, and many of these are from countries such as spain and korea. Perhaps we'll have to translate it into different languages - any volunteers?

@kenzone: Many thanks, I'll gladly take up your offer. It won't be ready for a couple of weeks yet, but i'm working on a docbook format for the user manual. This will allow the manual text to be created in several languages, and maintained in SVN.
Maintaining a manual in another language isn't just a one-off thing, ideally, it will be updated each time the english manual is updated. If you're still interested in maintaining a greek translation - that would be great. I'll contact you soon.

The user manual has been updated and is now online as fully hyperlinked html.
I've figured out how to use DocBook - this basically creates a common XML base manual which can then be used to generate a number of output formats. PDF is possible, but i haven't managed that yet!
If you are interested in translating it to another language (a fair bit of work ~5300 words!) then please let me know - you'll need a basic understanding of XML, and if you already know how to use DocBook - that's great! I'll tidy up the source code a bit more, and get the scripts all ready before putting the source into SVN. This will happen (latest) by 1st feb.
I'd really like your feedback on the manual - any corrections or ommissions, please let me know.
When replying to peoples' (+ noobs') questions you can now include a hyperlink direct to the relavent page of the manual. The manual is in the same place as before:

I have linked to the user manual on the upcoming website, but would it also be okay if i copied/pasted some selected parts for a FAQ page?
dave_t
01-14-2006, 12:30 PM
@JuddMan: Yes, you are welcome to copy some sections of the manual for a faq page... but there is a faq page in the manual... Be careful about duplicating information because if an error needs correcting, it then needs correcting in two places. Please link back to the original in your copy in case something becomes outdated.

The user manual has been updated and is now online as fully hyperlinked html.
Great work so far, but I think you should make the manual available in one more form, and that is a zipped archive holding all the files of the version you call a "set of HTML pages". That is what I'd like to have on my PC, but there is no convenient way of saving that form of it from your site.
For now I'll settle for the huge single page form of the manual, but I hope you will prepare a ZIP download with the multi-page form of it.
Best regards: dlanor

On this page 'http://www.daveandzoe.plus.com/sms/HTML/en/faq-exploit.html' I don't think the link to the ruling is needed as being an aussie myself I looked into it and found that the ruling is only for PS1 consoles, so modchips for PS2's are still illegal here in AUS, so I think the page should be modified as it could be misleading.

[This is a message for the SMS manual translators]
We've been having some problems with the SMS manual source code. Specifically, there were a number of spurious hyphen characters in the original text of the manual, which were incompatible with the patching system. These meant that created patches could not be applied.
Furatudo has been doing a lot of work on the portuguese translation, and found that special characters with marks over them ('accents' etc), don't seem to be correctly shown in a patch file. This means we can't use patch files to submit updates (e.g. new translations) to the manual.
I've updated the svn repository with a new set of xml pages - there are quite a lot of changes in there, i've removed all the spurious characters, plus all the tabs, and there are a couple of new faq entries as well.
If you've not already started translating, please svn-update your source, to include these changes.
If you're already mid-way through, and working on rev501, then you can try to merge in the new changes (svn-update) if you like, but you might find some conflicts. If this gives you problems, don't worry, just continue working from the version you have, submit back the complete xml files working from rev501, and i'll do the merging.
If any of you aren't sure how the new pages should be looking, there's now an example of a portuguese translated page in SVN: http://svn.ps2dev.org/filedetails.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2Fdocs%2Fsrc%2Fusage.xml&rev=0&sc=0
Completed translations should now be submitted back as a zipped set of xml files, rather than a patch file.
Sorry about this, but better to catch it early than to have all of you face the same problems that Furatudo found.
Thanks again for your help,
Dave
And for everyone else:

@juddman: I copied the files onto sms.ps2-scene.org a while ago, but it didn't work. Could not get the manual pages to appear in my browser on the sms url. I'll upload the latest version to sms.ps2-scene again, and if it works, yes by all means update the link on the sms page.
I'm sure my ISP would appreciate it, because the manual gets over 1000 hits per day now, and with all images, its probably using a lot of their bandwidth!

Weird thing, the pages don't show up for me either... very weird...

There is one important feature undescribed in the manual. It is the possibility to manualy choose the file for subtitles. Instaed of choosing the movie to play with X, you have to push O, and then you can choose the subtitle file to be used with the movie.

Sorry guys for not updating the manual in a while, I've been moving house, then my computer broke down completely. Also been spending a bit more time with my wife. Got a new one now (computer that is), so lets get that manual up to date!
Remember that the manual is in SVN in the same place as the SMS source code itself, so anyone is welcome to submit patches for updates to the manual. If you aren't up to helping the development of the C source code itself, then the manual & website are great ways you can contribute if you want to help SMS. Full instructions on how to do it are all in SVN (see the docs directory (http://svn.ps2dev.org/listing.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2F&rev=0&sc=0)).
For now, here's what I plan to do, mostly based on the questions that have been asked in the forum most recently, each '*' links to related posts.
Now:
Details on how to manually change the subtitle file.
More details (or links to) how to install BOOT.ELF.* (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45961)* (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46123)
Update information about USBD.IRX * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46552)
Add CD 'iso' image tutorial from here: http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/cdimage.htm
Add details of which type of DVD+-RW CDR/W are supported...
Update user interface instructions with new features (1.7+).
In the future:
Add detailed instructions on how to make your own fonts.* (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46345)* (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46275)
Add a codec compatibility list * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46286)
Add info about multiple PS2 support for radhost client.* (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46608)
Add a FAQ or troubleshooter for choppy video playback * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46302).
Add instructions for how to use swapmagic * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46434)
Add new launch method instruction, bootable DVD (mochip only) * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44134)
Add FAQ for reducing audio noise. * (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45715)
If anyone has more to add, please post them now!

I know you guys have put a lot of work into this and all I can say is 'total respect' but...........
Read through this and it seams to go way over my head, can I put sms onto my memory card using any other meathod than conecting it to my computer using a network adapter?
I have the slim line and have a router but have no idea how to connect the PS2 up to my home network, I have no sony network disc.
Why cant I put the sms file onto dvd-r and load it onto the memory card, my slimline is chipped with a matrix infinity.
Sry if I've posted on the wrong part of the forum or if this question has been answered before. All I want to be able to do is put 6 avi films onto a dvd-r and watch them on the PS2.

If your ps2 is chipped, just download the image from the official site. When you boot the cd, uLaunchElf will be loaded and you are able to copy the SMS.ELF to the memorycard.
This part is for the Matrix Infinity chip only (don't know about other modchips)
If you place your SMS.ELF in a directory "BOOT" on your 1st memorycard and rename it to BOOT.ELF you will be able to boot SMS directly when you turn your ps2 on.
Just press and hold the R1 button on your first gamepad when you boot your ps2 and it loads SMS directly instead of the PS2 browers. Not a disc needed!

Hi Michiel,
I hope the following makes sense, but if like me the uLaunchelf thingy didn't work properly (it did open but gave error message at top) I was able to make another directory named 'BOOT' and could put SMS.ELF into this directory but couln't rename it.
So I saved the SMS.ELF file onto my computer renamed it to 'BOOT.ELF' burnt it to a cd as a data disc and then after booting up LaunchELF I swapped the discs over and copied the new BOOT.ELF (SMS.ELF) into the new directory in the memory card.
This works a treat and SMS can now be started using R1 at boot up, you can then copy a whole dvd worth of avi files and when SMS is started you just put the DVD in and it reads and plays like a dream.
If anyone has a chip and needs to have the extra walkthrough (to go on the end of the one Michiel gave me) I will try my best to write it up so it makes abit more sense.
As you say 'really am loving SMS'

Forgot to mention, AFAIK you can't rename files on the MemoryCard. So I used my hdd or a usb stick to copy the elf file to, and then rename it.
I've setup my ps2 as such that when I hold R1 on boot, it will open uLaunchElf. From uLaunchElf I can go to SMS, and from SMS I can go to uLaunchElf. Works like a charm.

I need a little help with the Nero Ultra 7 and burning avi on cd-r discs. I have done this in the past and feel lost using the new version and posting about it here. What am I doing wrong and can I use Alcohol 120% for it?

Also, I had two questions. How do you actually put media on there? Do you make a new folder called 'MEDIA' or something? Sorry if it's already been answered.
And the other is for some reason, when I select "Select USB Support," or start SMS (USB is set on autostart), it just says "Locating USBD.IRX.." and nothing happens.

Is there any chance of making either A.) A playlist option or B.)An option to play the next file in the chosen directory? My goal is to select a folder and have SMS play all files in the folder, I hate having to hit play after every video finishes. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

Try these
HTML (multiple pages) (http://ps2-scene.org/sms/SMSMANUAL/HTML/en/index.html)
HTML (single page) (http://ps2-scene.org/sms/SMSMANUAL/HTML-single/en/SMS.html)
I suspect these might be out of date though...

Since it looks like dave_t has left us, what do people think of moving to a wiki based solution? This would be much easier for people to pick up as others move on.
There are free wiki hosting services like wikihost (http://wikihost.org/). I am happy to the initial spade-work of transferring the current version to the wiki if someone else can put a link to it on the SMS website.
Cheers,

Hi guys.
Sorry that I've not been posting on these forums in a long while. The manual hasn't been updated for about a year, and I really haven't been able to commit much time to it. My wife and I are now expecting our first child at the end of this month (I told you we'd been spending a lot more time together!), and my time is split between many tasks, of which, SMS is now a low priority. Please accept my apologies.
In my absence however, the manual has been extremely popular, even in it's non-updated state, sometimes got 1000 hits per day. I discovered to my horror this morning, that this had passed the ISP's bandwidth allowance for the 100MB free hosting that came with my ADSL internet access. So in short, they cut it off, deleted the content and locked my hosting account :(. I tried uploading the pages again, but I got 'access denied'.
The most up-to-date version of the manual is on the main SMS site at:
http://ps2-scene.org/sms/SMSMANUAL/sms_usermanual.html I suggest that this should the primary source for the manual from now on.
I know about the www.sksapps.com site that has mirrored the content, (without notification) but I'd recommend using http://ps2-scene.org/sms directly where possible. The up-to-date-ness of mirrors can't be guaranteed.
I'd like to remind you all that the full source code of the manual is (and always has been) in the SMS svn repository at svn://svn.ps2dev.org/ps2ware/trunk/SMS. Anyone can download it and generate the manual themselves. While on this subject, I'd also like to remind people that you can freely contribute to the manual to help update it.
I hear the suggestion of going over to a Wiki, I think it has its merits, the main one being ease of updates. My only concern is that it might turn into an ever expanding plethora of information and caveats rather than a set of walk-throughs which was the original intention. The structure and layout of the manual is based on two very successful open-source projects: Mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu) and GIMP (http://www.gimp.org). They still use the XML based approach, although they do appear to have a lot more people on-board. If people are able to actively maintain it, the XML based manual may still give the best final content to the first-time SMS user. My goal was to make it easier for first time users to get up-and-running with SMS.
I ultimately see the manual as something to be packaged with the download of SMS.elf itself, in PDF form, that people can print out and refer to during set-up.
Whether this happens will depend largely on my available time, and the willingness of volunteers.

My ISP gave me access to the web server again, so i've now put in redirects for all of the old web pages. That means any legacy links to various sections of the manual should all work again, redirecting to the appropriate page at http://ps2-scene.org/sms/SMSMANUAL/sms_usermanual.html
The free hosting had a daily transfer limit of 100MB, which was exeeded by the constant traffic, prompting them to shut the site down.
I've got more updates to the manual done, and am currently working on a tutorial for using the SMB network features of SMS.

Does anyone know when we will be able to get access to the SMS website again? I've updated the manual now, including an SMB tutorial and everything. I've just got no-where to upload it to! If anyone has any progress on this, please PM me. I'm sure there are some people who'd like to see it!
BTW the new version is in SVN if you want to compile yourself and take a look (svn://svn.ps2dev.org/ps2ware/trunk/SMS/docs).

Can you upload again the dummy files needed to create a DVD video for our media files? I didn't download it when it was up and now the link is broken.
Thanks in advance.

latest manual is here temporarily:
http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/docs/
but only the multi-page version is there for browsing to save bandwidth. no point in downloading every part of the manual if you're only going to read 10% of it.
you can download the single-page version as a zip file here:
english
http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/docs/sms-html-single-en.zip
portuguese
http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/docs/sms-html-single-pt.zip
if these files are gone, check back on http://www.psx-scene.com/sms/

Just to remind everyone, the latest user manual is currently at:
http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/docs/
According to the hit counter, most people still seem to be visiting the old version at psx-scene, which is a shame, since that version is over a year out of date, and i've put time into updating it.
Does anyone have any idea when we will be able to edit the sms website again? Any estimated dates... anything we can do to encourage the admins...?
Dave
@dave_t: ...I've put this link also to my home page, thank you...

Hi everyone!
The new user manual is now back online and in the proper place on the SMS website:
http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/manual.html
The more observant of those amongst you will notice that there is now a Russian translation! All the credit goes to VxWorks for adding the new text. Sounds good? Why not think about translating it into another language? It's really not that hard. Check the readme docs in SVN and PM me for details.
The source xml for the manual is now all updated in SVN (svn://svn.ps2dev.org/ps2ware/trunk/SMS). It had to be converted to utf-8 to cope with the Russian alphabet.
Enjoy!
Dave
P.S. The ftp access to the SMS web site seems to be back up and running again - I just tried my old login details and they worked.

No you're right, the manual hasn't been updated since SMS Version 2.3 (Rev.2), which you can see at the top of the manual site (http://www.psx-scene.com/sms/eng/index.htm). The same is true for the temporary manual link here (http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/docs/en/index.html). The main contributor of the manual was dave_t, who hasn't been around on this site since 07-18-2007.

Is the SMS latest version supports for USB External Hard drives?
Everytime I try to play movies using SMS 2.9 it doesn't show the folders on my usb hard drive. "My external usb hard drive is 150GB FAT32."
Any idea?
Thank You. :)

If you're talking about the dvdMini.rar file, then no I didn't have a copy of it, but I did a search online and found it under Experiment1106's 4shared account here (http://www.4shared.com/dir/3213467/80df8db2/PS2.html). I looked through amp's 4shared but couldn't seem to find it. Just in case anyone else comes looking for it later and Experiment's 4shared account no longer has this file, I'm uploading it here.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the links I posted for the SMS User Manual are no longer valid after this site changed servers.

Hi, the user manual can also be found here: http://members.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/en/index.html
I plan on making a PDF file of it, and also create a navigation system in the PDF.
