Yeah, the Idea is there. There will be a website for SMS. Of course will this forum be the general of sms, but the site will be there for al the n00bs. You can download sms there (always updated), screenshots and video's and of course tutorials and faqs if you can get sms to work. If there are any requests for the site, you can put them in this forum.

I will try to get the site ready before christmas. Also, the site will be in dutch and english. (Dutch is my language, and english is my second.)
If there are any voluntears to get other languages online, you can say it in this forum.

BTW, I know that my english is not that good, but I will try to get it in nice and clean english;)

You asked about video formats in the other thread... For video, I would have to reccommend WMV for small files at low resolutions... but what is the video of?

sent a PM.

I can help with spanish translation, if it has place, I think that could be useful...specially with subs arrival, Spain and 50% of America speaks spanish, like me ;)

It will need tutorial about how to load cd's dvd's and if they need to be swapped or if they will autoboot.

Also, if a list could be started (and well organized) about which usb devices work that would be greatly appreciated by most I think.

Here is my idea for a site Layout, the main objective of this layout is to resemble SMS's GUI. The picture is just a preview, if u need the .psd file just PM me ;) If u need help with anything else for the site u can also PM me :)

PS: I hope there isn't a problem with me using the attach option of the forum

BigMichiel
11-25-2005, 06:14 PM
here is a preview video of sms. This only shows what it can do. It's just for testing, the real video would be of the new sms (This is still rev7)

Furatudo

Looks nice. Big enough to see the on screen text and volume control and to see the quality ;)

This will be the flowchart (the site map). Tell me what you think or what I should change

JuddMan
11-26-2005, 10:55 AM
ok but i'd advise don't make too many sections and then have no time to update them all. you could combine status and news together for instance.

BigMichiel
11-26-2005, 11:21 AM
Yeah, I could. But status is more like a list of what sms can do, and news is what's going on and whats new ;)

why dont you save your time and just make a wiki

BigMichiel

The site has been cancelled. Dave_T has managed to create a manual for SMS. Now, every noob can get that and all his questions are anwserd in it, so there is no need for a site anymore. I can focus more at my school at the moment so I think, thumbs ups!:)

dave_t
12-06-2005, 04:15 PM
Please don't cancel the website! I was really hoping for a good place to host the manual/faqs. A website is surely the way to go. It helps to have all the information, downloads, links etc in one place rather than spread across posts of an ever-growing forum.

BigMichiel
12-06-2005, 04:31 PM
but you've got every question of a n00b covered in the manual. All they have to do is download it from this forum. I didn't know at first how to get the network running with sms, now I'm playin my dbz trough the network;) If the users are more into sms, they WILL search the forum, cause they're interested;).

Or am I missing something?

dave_t
12-06-2005, 04:57 PM
It took me a day of investigating the SMS project to even find this forum. While i was very interested in the project, it still took me a long time to find the information, and get it all working. I've been messing with it for a week, and only yesterday realised the technique to get usb working.

I still struggle to find the information again, i.e. all the links to downloads etc, and rely on my own bookmarks to get things like radhostclient, usbd.irx, svn url for sms, eeug's website for official downloads, etc. The information is all here in the forums, its just hard to find. That's what a website is for surely? - To seperate the important factual information from overload of questions & specualtive answers.

As the forum gets more and more used, there are more and more repeated threads asking the same old questions. This makes it harder and harder to find the information you want. (Searches are more likely to return other users' posts asking the same question, without necessarily a correct answer - i'm sure we've all been there!).

Even the manual i just wrote (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42110)
might get lost in the forum, so the important information must be kept somewhere consistent. This is for the benefit of both n00bs and regs.

Gotta have a web site.

so... is it happening or not? if not from BigMichiel, then i'll give it a shot but i do not have hosting (at least, not outside the 20mb my ISP gave me and i dont plan on sticking with them forever)

nor do i have a domain name... but if someone can provide a webspace then i can make a site... FTP login preferable. i don't plan on using any serverside scripts... 'forums' will just link to here.

in the meantime i will work on it and upload it to a temporary location... TBA

Well, I kicked off the project before I had the website complete. But I did asked ps2-scene.org if they can host the site and they found it ok. So I guess if you want to take the project over you can use something like sms.ps2-scene.org (if I remembered it ok).

Okay, just until we get hosting here on PS2-Scene.org (it's been offered but i haven't recieved a reply. i'll send another message)...

the SMS Website is temporarily here (http://www.adam.com.au/kellyjones/sms/index.htm)

Featuring some dodgy screenshots, a FAQ on creating readable DVD's, and links to the User Manual, downloads, and these forums. If there's anything you'd like to see there, let me know.

@JuddMan: nice one, really ;). Thanks a lot for your efforts;
@all: current status of WIP here: fixed bug in mp3 decoder (it appears that sound became mode clear, not 100% sure about it yet), fixed (hopefully) hang during m3u playback/playlist scrolling. Beside that I'm rewriting all graphics stuff from scratch (that, I hope, will improve image quality (that "jagged lines" effects and ugly picture in NTSC mode) and fix aspect ratio problems). This goes rather slowly since I'm using assembler heavily, so, it will take some time (~month+) before 1.5 Rev.3 will be ready...

I'll connect my ps2 to the pc again. That way, I can capture some nice and clear screenshots/videos;)

JuddMan
01-20-2006, 05:25 PM
screenshots would be much appreciated. i dont want to rip off the manual too much :)

Also, if you feel like it, if you would capture some decent quality video showing features of SMS (browsing the CD, HDD (if you have one), network, open menu, look at some of the options, then start a video and look at the menu, do some playing around... fast foward, rew... then encode at decent quality, as i'd like a bit of footage to play around with there... maybe aim for 10-30meg file at 2-5 minutes. (i'd like to use it as i'm thinking of making something for the site with it (not a video clip)).

if you want to put a video on the site, aim for no more than 1-2mb.

btw... do you still want to do the dutch version? if so, email me.

edit: site updated. added this (http://sms.ps2-scene.org/dev.htm)page

JuddMan

Major update: Dutch version (thanks to BigMichiel)... looking for people to translate other languages too...

JuddMan
02-28-2006, 12:29 AM
Major Update: Portuguese translation, done by Furatudo, who is also working on the user manual. thanks for your work!

also, the big flags are gone... i didn't like them much... for the moment, the intro page just redirects to the english page... but for people who turn that stuff off, the language links are still there. if anyone knows how to detect the browser's locale and foward them to portuguese or dutch when appropriate from the index page, could you PM me? i couldn't really find it on google... but i didn't search that hard.

The site language can be changed on any page using the new drop-down in the links bar... You'll even stay on the page you were on when the language changes. i'm just learning javascript, so that was about the second script i ever worked on.

We're looking for more translations... there's not all that much text, and only 5 pages (most not full of text, only 2 with any significant amount), so PM me or MSN me: Juddman03

another thing, if someone knows how to let the user change and remember the stylesheet used on the page through javascript, that would be nice, but it's not really important.

Nice! I like the new footer :p

But there is a problem with the language drop-down box, it doesn't work for me on Firefox (it works on IE though...).

As for the scripts, check your e-mail ;)

BigMichiel

Nice to see another language:)

thanks for updating the version number on the english site, whoever that was, i'm guessing you, BigMichiel?

university went back, i've got hooked on WoW, and my PS2 broke... all in the same week... so i dont think i am going to be participating too much anymore. good thing it is a reasonably low maintenance site. all the real stuff happens here and in the user manual.

also, for the other guys who worked on the site, regarding linking to other useful files and stuff, or changing the site, i certainly don't mind. if you want to add a section to your language version or even to the english version, that's fine by me.

BigMichiel
03-14-2006, 12:38 AM
Yeah it was me;) You told me that info before so I will stay and update as long as I have the time for it;)

@JuddMan: ...I hope that SMS wasn't the reason for PS2 breakage :). Thank you and good luck ;)...

JuddMan
03-16-2006, 12:42 PM
no... it's aparently a common V9 problem. the dvd driver chip failed causing too much voltage to the laser unit... was playing off the HDD at the time and the drive stopped spinning without me knowing about it... the disc in the drive, an old PS1 demo disc, now has a warped spot where i assume the laser came to rest in overdrive before failing completely.

JuddMan
05-24-2006, 06:13 AM
CD images are now available. they took all of 10 minutes to make, but i do understand that self help isn't always so easy when you don't know where to begin.

so the page also has a 'roll your own' guide on it too.

Contains both uLaunchELF, and SMS, so that you can put the latest SMS on a memcard or USB drive and not have to burn another disc when SMS is updated.

there are no configuration files included, so you will need to set the key mappings in uLaunchELF on the first run. (if i put a config file on the CD, you would not be able to edit it, so it's best this way)

BigMichiel

BigMichiel

I just hooked up my ps2 at my pc again. Took some time to take some good screenshots. I replaced them with yours, Juddman. Nothing personal, but these show more the quality of sms cause they're taking from the source.

They look like this:

instead of

BigMichiel

I put the changelog of EEUG on the site. A lot of people check that site to see if a new version is out. Now, they can see what the changes are. I'll try to do that everytime from now on;)

VanJ
05-30-2006, 08:12 AM
Would it be possible to add some voting to the page? e.g. about next feature to be implemented in SMS.

BigMichiel
05-30-2006, 11:38 AM
Hmm, I'll see what I can do

EDIT: I thought it trough, and desided not to do it. Simply because it will confuse a lot of people. They'll think that the option that has the most choices, will be the main priority of implention.

Since that won't be the case, I have to say no to the voting system.

EEUG is still the main coder (don't know who's coding sms at this time, maybe dlanor?) and I know he's on a break at the moment. He too has a life;) Besides that, MPEG support is his main target at the moment.

So I guess there not really a need for a voting system;)

But I have a Pinnacle PCTV Rave card in my pc. You know, such card which you can use to watch tv on your pc. Well, I hooked my Playstation trough s-video to my PC and took the screenshots using Dscaler.

That's why they look so good;)

OMG. The new month has only just begon. The pageloads of the site is at 1,965 :| In just 1,5 day. The site is getting more popular then ever. Most of the people check the main page. The second most is the cdimage. Looks like your Idea to putt a cdimage file on the site was a very good idea juddman!

VanJ
06-02-2006, 04:12 AM
May be you could put there some tutorial about RHCAutomator. It is very good stuff too.
I had just one problem with it. As I had no VB software installed before, there was one missing OCX file. So I found it on The Net, copied and registered, and then everithing worked.
Another topic could be serving two PS2 from one PC with the modified RadHostClinet.

BigMichiel

Maybe. But the author have to agree with it, of course.

JuddMan
06-02-2006, 12:59 PM
interesting, the cd image page being so popular...

though we do not have any means of tracking visits to the download page, the manual, or the forums, as they are not ours to track.

Great news (I've been on vacation;)) Just have to fix some scripts if you want to change the language.

JuddMan
08-05-2006, 02:08 AM
i vote to take the scripts (for the language pulldown) out. they only work on IE anyway. maybe replace it with some tiny flags.

or if someone can be bothered, simplify it to just direct to the main page of the selected language. That will avoid having to make temporary pages for sections that havent been translated yet.

BigMichiel
08-05-2006, 03:05 AM
Sounds good enough for me

@all

I would really like to translate SMS to german, if somebody could send me the regarding text(-files)! :D

If I have translated it into german, maybe someone could tell me how to use the german language in SMS?

Best regards

cool400

BigMichiel
12-12-2006, 10:07 AM
What do you want to translate, the site and/or SMS? If you want to translate the site just send me a pm with your email and we'll work it out. If you want to translate SMS it download a language file for it from the official website (http://sms.ps2-scene.org) The info about how to use it etc should be in the manual.

@BigMichiel

Oh, I just saw that German is already included in the language-file examples :D

But it seems that not the whole text is translated to german - maybe I will transtlate the rest and mail it to you!

Best regards

I just made an update to the dvdMini (http://sms.ps2-scene.org/images/dvdMini.rar) file This file contains the dummy movie files to put onto the DVD-Video format discs which can be read by SMS without a modchip.

When placed into a DVD player, Instead of the half-second of credits from the 'Angel' TV series, it now displays a somewhat more informative message (http://sms.ps2-scene.org/temp/smsdvdscreen.jpg)

i haven't tested it though (currently not at home). if there're any problems with it, post a note here. if you get an error similar to 'allocation of dvd-video files failed' in Nero, ignore it and continue. the format is NTSC, as it's somewhat more compatible (a black & white picture is preferable to a rolling one)
the tutorial that shows you how to create these discs can be found at http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/faqcdvd.htm (other languages also available)

All these discs can do is hold video, MP3's and other files. SMS can read them even in unmodded consoles.
you can not boot the PS2 using one of these discs. the PS2 will just play the dummy video. you must launch SMS first. (the tutorial does mention this, right at the top, but people still ask.)
they may not work when booting with a modchip. modchip owners should try a regular data DVD first anyway.

used rar this time, as rar compressed the file to 150k whereas .zip could only manage about 1.2mb

J-SIN

awesome, gonna try it out ASAP.

EDITED: just tested it no problem at all! it looks much nicer too, thanks for making it! :D

if anyone would like to provide a tutorial on making a SMS DVD image (uLaunchELF optional) for the website, that would be greatly appreciated. it could be e-mailed to
juddman03 at hotmail dot com.

some people like to make all-in-one discs, others can't boot CD-R but can boot DVD's, so such a thing will be handy.

credit will be given.
