We've uploaded Software Release 17 Beta.

Important: Crystal Chip will autodetect the firmware disc and will load the 'Main Menu'. Please follow these steps strictly in the order they are listed:

Step 1: Insert Memory Card
Step 2: Insert firmware disc
Step 3: Install Bootmanager v1.7
Step 4: Upgrade firmware
Step 5: Put console in standby mode
Step 6: Turn console on again to enter Bootmanager v1.7

Do not upgrade new firmware before Bootmanager v1.7 was installed on the inserted memory card. Please follow this advise to avoid the risk of damage. This is still a beta-release.

This release adds a number of features including the ability to add new devices (USB, HDD, etc) which may be used to load homebrew applications. This also adds v14 support. Please note that this release has known bugs and another new release will follow shortly. PS1 games may not work on some versions of consoles with this release of software. If you have problems with PS1 games or anything else, please give us a few days for us to release our next upgrade to resolve these issues.

The application path has to look like this:

mass:/BOOT/APPS/LAUNCHELF/LAUNCHELF.ELF
mass:/BOOT/APPS/LAUNCHELF/APPINFO.PBT

But don't be too optimistic. It seems that there are many applications that don't launch from usb. But, of course, it has to be kept in mind that release 1.7 is beta.

thx, tried the easy way and copied the dir directly from my pc to the pendrive. apps appear in application manager but after i try to start one the screen turns black and nothing happens :( tried EXECFTPS and HDloader0.7c

edit: same with reality mediaplayer, seems to be one of the bugs in this beta

Boots PS2 backups here, hangs on PS1 backup at black screen.
Oddly I get a black screen when powering on the console unless the memory card is inserted.
SCPH-75001 CC1.0

This bug, already mentioned by the Crystal Team, also affects original PS1 games. While the Crystal Chip is activated, the PS2 doesn't seem to be able to directly boot any kind of PS1 games. In my case, while the chip is activated, launching of PS1 games is only possible from the BootManager interface. Via BootManager, launching of PS1 games of any kind seems to work flawlessly.

When you enter the Sony PS2 Browser, insert a PS1 game disc. You'll see that it will be displayd as a PS2 game disc.

(Setup: PS2 PAL V12, CC1.0, FW 1.7, BM 1.7)

Hi There,

Loaded the new 1.7 firmware today as soon as it was released, before the crystal team gave any instructions on how to use it, did not use the memory card. Firmware said done!

Restarted the console now all i am getting is a black screen? is it game over for the chip or does anyone know if it can recover from this?
Have tried pressing reset 3 times ect. Its a v-14 pal console with a 1.0 crystal chip.

Thanks..

Confirmed PAL to NTSC video fix is working now. Running BM1.7 on CC1.0 chip. Will check ARMax right now for you Lucanasci.

The ARMax bug is still there. Tried Ape Escape 2 and Final Fantasy X-2, both with either no codes selected or some codes, neither would boot.

The console will probably boot to BM with it installed on the memory card.
I was also getting black screen with no memory card installed. However I did the BM install prior to the FW update as they suggested.

So will i need to install BM on a memory card using a diff console with a CC installed and then try it in this 1? also does the MC need to be formated?

Well im getting complete black screen, no PS2 splash screen at all with a v-14, the CC was unflashed, but after flashing with 1.7 all i get is the black screen?
Does anyone have any ideas????

Failing that i will just install a new CC as soon as they arrive.

Try removing your memory card, then start up the PS2 with the crystal chip in recovery mode maybe - Surely that'll work as your temp back on the original flash.

EDIT - Ignore this, I missed the key (ver14)

You'll probably have to install BM using a different console, or with a new unflashed CC installed. Give recovery mode a try.

from Crystal site:

Software Release 18
18-11-2005

We've uploaded Release 18 of our software pack. This release included bug-fixed firmware for use on v14 (7500x) consoles. Please do not use or distribute Release 17 since Release 17 has a bug which causes v14 (7500x) consoles to not boot if a memory card with BootManager installed is not inserted. Please use Release 18 instead.

Release 18 is intended as a temporary solution to provide full support for v14 (7500x) consoles, with exception of PS1 discs. In this release (and Release 17) PS1 discs will not work on v14 (7500x) consoles. This is a known issue and is currently being resolved. This is not a hardware issue and will be fully addressed in our next release. Release 19 will follow sometime early next week. We will also explain some of the new features in BootManager at that time.

Hmm the PAL to NTSC fix works, I had to set it to Auto for the video mode and color. If I set it to force NTSC, it will display in 50hz. Very good piece of software, now let's just see them fix the thing so we can use action replays on it. I haven't tested AR on it yet but I've been hearing it doesn't work. Will have to try that soon.

Thanks crystal team, I was starting to wonder if this fix would ever come out! :)
