Do I need a new laser?

I just got an unmodded pstwo that wont boot anything but CD's ( ps1 and demo's). No dvd's no dvd games. I was going to replace the laser but before I wast my money I wanted to be sure that this is the problem, and this is the fix.
Thanks for the help. I've modded a couple ps2 but never had laser problems that a good cleaning couldnt fix.

you should test the coils first determine if the laser is good ..if its 5 ohms or more on both coils ..then try adjusting the DVD pot ...but do it a little at a time ..and repeat until it reads the DVD ....lower the pot resistance 50-100 ohms at one time ...
