I had hanging with some versions of USBD.IRX in mc0:/SMS
Once I found the version from GT3 to work, SMS launches fine. Sounds like you have a different problem though, considering how EEUG replied to your first post.

I start sms from the memory card and hang happens when there is no disk into the playstation.

After several testing ,i burn the sms.elf on the CDR and run ,no problem at alll.However ,if run from MC using ulanchelf 3.41n ,then hang again.

I have the same problem, it says "Initializing File context" and its stuck. Could not even reset the PS2. Had to power off the switch from behind.
Is there a solution? I'm also using ulanchelf 3.41n but I'm running it from the CD, not the MC. And I do not have usbd.irx in the MC as well.

I've tested in my v10 and no prob, from MC/HDD without a disk in tray...
Take a look in the option disk control in Ulaunchelf, I know that if turned off solves the problem for v9 and over...don't know for lower versions, also remove USBD.IRX you may have in locations showed in SMS readme:
"...
USBD.IRX is not included (licensing issues). SMS looks for it in:
- host:USBD.IRX
- mc0:/BOOT/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/PS2OSCFG/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/BOOT/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/SMS/USBD.IRX
*** in aforementioned order ***;
..."

mine is either v7 or v8. still no luck. disk control turned off but still hang.
I found no USBD.IRX in any directory. Where can I get the readme for the sms?

Sigh, I copied the sms.elf to mc0:/SMS/
ejected the disc and then only start SMS.elf.....still the same....just hang there. Could it be I got a buggy version of the sms.elf?

How do you start Launchelf? dev1/dev2??
When did this start to happen???
Do you have HDD? if yes how is HDloader behavior?

Now I'm testing without a PS2HDD and hangs....why? because there is no valid SMS interface ready, you should have an interface ready because there is no Null interface defined in SMS...Am I wrong?

i start the ulaunchelf from CDR (i am not sure my modchips support dev1/dev2 or not,u know how to activiate it ,my ps2 is 50006 )
Then inside ulauncelf ,i copy the sms.elf from host:/ to mc0:/
then start the mc0:/sms.elf and hang at 'Initializing SMS'

However,if i remove the CDR before the SMS start,then SMS start no problem

Beside,i tried the keylauncher 0.53 and running fine from mc0:/ ,no hangin problem .Do you know keylauncher support host: ? becasue i want to copy file from host: to mc0: often.

Jacky401,
dev1/2 is modchip feature not a ps2 one, refer to modchip manufaturer manual / site.
since I reproduce the problem removing ps2hdd, so ther must be something related to SMS interfaces or I will check how works turning on/off reset iop in ulaunchelf settings tonight. I dont use keylauncher because requires a cd in tray for some appz and dont like to have one in, for what I know uLaunchelf is a more complete system tool and works ok in my system

Well investigating more, I've removed HDD and put NA and start SMS without a disk in tray so It seems to be hang at "initializing SMS..." but in fact is waiting for an interface...so I started Ps2client in PC and files are shown, same thing happens when inserting a dvd with avi movies in it...
conclusion: is not a hang, is waiting...

@Mr worm

Do you mean that when u start ps2client on pc ,the 'Initializing SMS' get passed ? BTW,what is the use of reset IOP?

ahh.. this is interesting.. maybe the need for a "No Data" screen is warranted (simmilar to OSDSYS)

The problem is that SMS does not load the browser until there is something sensible to load.

If there are no mediums (ie, No Host, No CD, No HDD, No USB), then SMS will stop at the Loading SMS Screen, until it finds a valid medium.

I reccomended to Mr Worm that as a short term fixed, the string should be changed from "Loading SMS..." to "Waiting for devices..."

edit - Reset IOP will flush the IOP, so SMS can cleanly load its own IOP modules. This, however, wont help in this situation.

...in fact there's "Waiting for media..." message. I just put it to the wrong line :), so it is never displayed. It's fixed now (thank you for remark and research) and next release will include the fix...

@ALL

i have sucessfully solved the problem by setting following parameter in ulaunchelf

1.turn on reset IOP
2.turn off disc control

Jacky

Now no more waiting/hanging !!

You mean the final conclusion is that we cannot have a HDD attached to the NA?
I tried to start SMS and then insert a dvd with avi movies in it but it stills sit there waiting....
Congrats jacky401, for getting it to work. I followed your steps to reset IOP and turn off disc control but I still can't get it to work.

Nope, there is no need to have a HDD attached...To start browser SMS needs a valid interface. Read what EEUG and Hypersonic said about

Relating to dvd with avi movies, start SMS with the dvd inserted (a short term solution)...for me there could be a bug that causes a hang in "reading directory..." state but since everything couldn't be done at the same time, for now this has to wait until others features implemented...:banghead:

Problem solved. I really got a bugged version. Downloaded the latest version. Works like a charm even with HDD attached to NA, without turning on reset IOP or turning off disc control. Excellent.
