Hi

New to the forums, so please be gentle.

I modded a friends PSTwo back in April. I initially had a problem which was solved by contacting Matrix directly and getting a 3.3v for the chip from elsewhere and using a diode to reduce the voltage. Once this was done, everything worked fine.

Six months on and he's having trouble reading DVDs. CDs (original CDs, backups and Audio CDs) work fine, but for some reason the DVDs don't. Here's the weird thing: If I use the PSTwo for around 10 minutes ie playing a CD backup then I can go back and try the same DVDs which then work fine and continue to do so. It's almost as if something is needing to 'warm up' before it'll work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did try searching but nothing came up.

Maybe you should try to take the neo fix off. See if that fixes anything.

Thanks - I'll give it a try.

I saw the thread regarding the 'resistor fix' as opposed to a diode fix. Is this worth doing in place of the neofix?

You mean summ0ne's fix? Yeah you can use that. That's what I use on all my pstwos.

Cool - I'm at work right now but will give this a go tomorrow.

Thanks for your input!

ok - update.

Removed the Neofix - xii (not ii, sorry!) and DVDs were reading fine again.

However, I'm now in a situation where the DVD doesn't spin at all !!! It was fine until I tried to solder the 560 Ohm resistor as part of summ0ne's fix. Now even with the resistor removed I cannot get it to spin. I actually did get it spinning again but it wouldn't read anything (with the 560 Ohm resistor) - start-stop, start-stop etc. I think it's still a bad connection on one of the SMD fuses still and trying my darnedest to locate the bad penny. Any help would be appreciated!

Make sure that you are using the correct value resistor for your v12.

Another update.

After checking all resistors and connections (with no fixes installed right now), I now have the disc spinning. It still isn't reading, but at least it's spinning again.

Here's what it's doing:

DVD : Unit powers on. DVD spins in a weird manner. it kinda jerks 5 or 6 times and doesn't really gain speed at this point. It then gains speed and tries to read the disk. The laser doesn't venture from the inside track and eventually gives up.

CD : Unit powers on and slowly the CD gains speed. Again, laser stays on the inside track and bobs up and down and again eventually gives up.

A little further on now. I checked the readings from the tracking and focus coils. Tracking coil is 5.1 Ohms. Focus is 1.7 Ohms. I know they should both be around 5, so I think the problem is still a connection issue.

Finally solved this - the laser had burned out. I think it was when I connected the 4.7k resistor. I've left this for now and just swapped the two 30k resistors with 100k. All working fine with a new laser.
