I have a v1 ps2 and the sx solder point is on the bottom side of the motherboard. It is extremely hard to get to this part as the board above the motherboard is soldered to it with 4 thick bars. So I was wondering if there was an alternate solder point on the other side? Also I read somewhere that on other modchips it is only necessary to be able to read psx backups. Is this true? Thanks in advance.
No there are no alternatives point for SX. I was in the same situation as you couple months ago.
i know on mi's and the clones sx is only needed for psx backups but not sure with crystals???
u could just install it without sx and see what happens u won't do any harm

Sx point on every chip is only use for psx backups.

There IS an alternate point, if I can find where I put the pic of where it is (don't count on it, I modded one of these 2 years ago) I'll post it. Nicotine knows where it is, I'll try asking him again. Saved me from having to desolder all that stuff.
The alternative point is not stable. I emailed the Matrix Team while back and that's what they told me.

Ok, thanks for the responses. I installed it without the SX point and everything seems to be working fine for my purposes. I am just going to use it for dev anyway so I have no need to boot psx backups.
For those who would like to know where the alternate unstable SCEX point is, check the attached picuture.
I'm not affraid of soldering to that point, but I'm affraid what will happen if the sx point is unstable. Will it affect the chip?
I've seen lots of v1 diagrams and mostly all of them use the bottom one. Don't really know why it's unstable, but I guess there's some inference or resistor in the way. Hopefully someone will shed some light on this.
v3 boards also got a top point, but the same thing there not recommended on most diagrams.
Uh, you mean almost all of them use the top sx alternative point?
Read what you posted, then revise, cause I think you mistype.
Think we need to define top and bottom. With top I mean where most of the points are soldered, bottom where the ee engine and all the other large chips are.

Have done a quite a few Version 1 PS2 On the top Point. No problems as long as the laser is good & can establish the CD in a timely manor

This has been debated many times in the past. I have used the alternative SX point many many times with no problems what so ever with any of the chips.

there is an extra alt SX point on the O2 modchip diagrams.
I'm using it with no problems at all

Hmm I tried the Alternate SX point and it will boot PSX games but it will keep cycling. It'll switch to PSX bios, boot the PSX game, then fail and repeat. I might try the bottom SX point to see what happens.
