View Full Version : v12 spins & stops after removing subzero fix.

I finally decided to mod my v12 (I've done maybe 100 ps2, xbox and gc's) so I ordered a chip and subzero fix. I started with installing the fix first. I cut the trace, tested with a multimeter, soldered the fix in, the disc wouldn't spin. Resoldered, checked everything, still the same.
I then took out the fix, figuring I would try and get it running stock first and then start from there. I rebuilt the trace and it loaded a normal ps2 disc on the first time.
I then soldered a new fix in (I ordered a bunch of them) but this time soldered wires to all the points rather than soldering the fix right on top of the components. The laser lights up but the spindle does not spin.
So I take out this fix, re-build the cut trace. Now the disc spins, but only for a few seconds, than it stops spinning, and than starts spinning, and than stops spinning, etc, etc, etc. It goes to the browser and it spins and stops a few more times and then the disc stops completely and it just sits at the browser screen.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?? I have checked all the fuses and they seem fine.

if the lens shines but does not move - the via point or wire point is badly soldered.
if it stays that way when you remove the fix and rebuild - the PS11 fuse is burnt.
if the lens starts knocking up and down when a DVD is loaded - the point that goes to the fuse is badly soldered.
if your disc is spinning up and down - you have damaged the tracking resistors on the mobo, replace them.
(i think those are all the possible screwups)
Good luck!
p.s.
Always apply the fix delicately, the circuit you are applying it to is analog and thus very sensitive.

Ya, I think it's the resistors. The laser shines, moves back and forth along the sled and the disc itself spins and stops. The problem is radio crap doesn't have 30k. I have a ton of them but not at 30k. Can I string two of them together or what value would I need to replace the resistors plus add in the tracking fix all in 1 resistor or maybe I can combo a cpl of them.

use 68k or 100k.
remember to change both and then apply fix accordingly

So I can use the 68k or 100k ones and it won't matter as long as both are changed? And than apply the correct fix resistors for that configuration. So if I used a 100k in place of my 30k ones, I wouldn't need any resistor fix at all?

yes - no fix for 100k

Ok, I'll try a few 100k ones and see what happens. Hey, this is almost like real time forums. lol. Thanks for your help and work in the scene.

Well I took of the two smd 30k resistors, put two 100k 1/4 watt resistors on the pads and it still doesn't spin at all. Any idea's?? All the fuses test ok. The laser head moves and lights up red for a sec when a disc is in but it doesn't start spinning at all.

Yes, im 99% sure this has something to do with the smd resistors as summ0ne allready said. reason i say this is because it happend to be 4 times too. If the smd was fucked, maybe it has destroyed your laser by now.
Can you put your current laser in another v12 to test it?

yes, test the laser.
ive had the same symptom also once when the cd motor cable was not properly plugged in and anothertime replacing the whole optical block helped.
you never know for sure...

No this was my first pstwo I was going to try. Lucky it was mine. O well, you learn as you go. Next time I think I'll use wires from the start. I don't do good with those 'solder to the board' things. I've done dozens of 1.6 XBox's, always use wire to rebuild. The one time I tried the 1.6 LPC rebuild thing, board doesn't work now.

Laser is toast. Plugged in the drive from a customers PSTwo, it fired right up first time, spins and alls. But at least I know the 100k resistors and the mech fix are installed and working correctly. That's a start.

Got another laser, soldered in a chip and it working fine. The 100k 1/4 watt resistors seem to be holding up fine and I broke off the resistor part of my subzero fix so it just has the mech protection. Let's see how it holds up. Thanks summ0ne

Hey summ0ne, what's probably the culprit if the laser no lights? I put in an h2o w/ the onboard fix and she no lights and just moves back and forth whilst the disc spins.

check the points where you applied the resistor.
try removing the resistor and A B G H I S points and clean those points to see if the ps2 will work
