How to make a PS2 bootable CD with SMS and Movie?
Here is attached a buildCD.rar file that contains CDgenPS2 and SYSTEM.CNF.
That tool is for making PS2 CD images bin/cue, that can be recorded later using any softaware like NERO, and asume that you have SMS.ELF, in case you dont, donwload it from here (last version):
http://svn.ps2dev.org/filedetails.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2Fbin%2FSMS.elf&rev=0&sc=0
and rename SMS.elf to SMS.ELF.
Then put in any folder SYSTEM.CNF / SMS.ELF / MOVIE(S), open CDgenPS2 and using explorer drag'n drop all this files and click in IMG icon and save image the record the CD and enjoy!
How to convert audio to AC3?
In case you prefer to convert mp3 or wav to AC3?
here I found an interestin tool to do it:

How to copy movies from CDFS: (ISO/CD/DVD) to HDD using uLaunchelf:
I assume you know how to assign buttons to ELFs, so assign one to FileBrowser (I did it with R3, press analog Right). In this SubApp you will have some devices FS, select cdfs: and will show CD/DVD contents, press R1 and a menu will appear, copy desired file and browse up with Traingle, then select hdd0: (a few partitions will appear) select the partition you want to copy the movie (or any file to) press R1 again and choose PASTE this time. In 6-7 minutes you will have the 700Mb movie in HDD. Enjoy!
Note: do not abuse of this method, cause it contribute to stress your Laser lens, Use at your own risk! ;)
You can find last uLaunchelf version here:
http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37242&page=1
How to copy movies from HOST: to HDD using uLaunchelf:
To use this feature you need a PC with a NIC and PS2 Network Adapter, If you want to connect them directly, you will need a crossover UTP cable.
1-Exec uLaunchelf and select FileBrowser and in the menu select HOST: wait about 10-12 seconds and ".." will appear.
2-In PC exec from CMD: "ps2client.exe -h 192.168.0.10 listen" and will work for all files&folders that you have in ps2client directory
3-Refresh PS2 screen pressing Triangle and then enter to HOST: again (maybe you need to repeat this process) until files&folders appear
4-To copy files do it in the same way as above (Copy from cdfs: to HDD)
This method is faster than FTP, you can copy a 700Mb movie in about 18-20 minutes. Until now is the FASTEST method
PS2client & CDexplorer are attached here as Utils.rar

Putting system.cnf and sms.elf into a directory doesn't seem a good idea to me.
Also setting LBA 12231 to the system.cnf is absolutely necessary, else the CD won't work at all.

Reccomded CD Configuration for use in Nero/other burning programs
Mode2/XA
ISO Level 2 + Joliet
SYSTEM.CNF pointing to cdrom0:\SMS.ELF
SYSTEM.CNF should have a LBA of 12231 if you are booting with swap magic.
Make sure the ELF and the CNF file are all uppercase.
You can then add movies to this CD.

hi Mr Worm, I was trying your method to copy movies from HOST: to HDD using uLaunchelf. When I select select hdd0:, I only see 3 partition. They are _boot, HDLoader and PGEN1.1.
why can't I create a new directory under the hdd0:?
When I move the cursor to _boot, it says I have 500mb left. On the other 2 folders, it says I only have 127mb.
If I boot into HDloader, it says I have 30GB left. Is this all happening because I fully formatted my HDD using the HDloader. Is there a method to format the HDD with 1/2 HDloader and 1/2 fat32?
Mr. Worm~~

IC, you need a tool D M S Format (don't know if I can post it here, afraid to be banned) so take a look at www.d m s 3.com site or use google...then create a partition and give to it the size you like x*128megs, then you will have a new dir to copy movies, and will appear as +Something in browser

can i make one boot CD without movie and
just swap with any avi movie i want?
i try it with ps2reality and it worked although
some says that swap method doesnt work with certain
modchip.
well, ps2 reality works perfectly for me, but i just
want to see how SMS doing since most peolpe says
it much stable than ps2reality.
keep up the good work and thanks in advance

once you load SMS, you can change to a disc with just avi files on it to play it. it should work. if you have a modchip.
if you dont have a modchip and want to swap the disc out, i'm not sure about that... when i want to swap discs i do it in uLaunchELF before loading SMS as i listened and could hear the disc spinning in SMS... but that was back in 1.4 rev4 i believe, and it may be diferent now...
if you have a DVD burner then you can do This (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=40624), which will work even without a chip.

ok it work, but it doesnt recognise my USB drive.
its becouse i sometime download small size movie (mostly anime series)
and put it in my 512mb USB drive and hope i can play it with
my SMS, but it doesnt detect nothing. is that sms doesnt support it
or my faulty USB drive.
i also ecounter the same problem with launELF, it does detect
my USB drive, but when i tried to open the folder, it hangs up.
but after i put my AR mAX cd, browse it using ARMAX, the swap it
with my LauncELF cd, it reads just fine.
i thought it has something to do with the CD, so i put the launcelf
to my memcard. but the same thing happens.
thanks in advance

@zhac321, would you try disabling network??
@EEUG Could it be the same CDInit() CDStop() in usb_mass?? Just sounds known ;) Unfortunately I have no USB device to test with.
@zhac321: if USB is not recognized than most probably there's a problem with USBD.IRX. Refer README and this forum :).
@Mr. Worm~~: no, there're no cd calls in usb_mass. But in Rev.8 there's still "old" host driver...

The way I'm playing my videos is from dvd-r trick. The videos play fine but there is no audio.

@Mr Worm, I'll give it a try.
@EEUG, i read the readme file and he wrote something like this
<Update (23-JUL-2005)
-------------------
- added "exit to the ps2 browser" action (select-TRIANGLE);
- tried to fix difficult-to-catch (thread stuff) "movie stop action does not work always";
- USB support added (thanks and regards to 'weltall'):
USBD.IRX is not included (licensing issues). SMS looks for it in:
- host:USBD.IRX
- mc0:/BOOT/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/PS2OSCFG/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/BOOT/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX
- mc0:/SMS/USBD.IRX
*** in aforementioned order ***;
I'm using legal USBD.IRX from Playstation 2's Linux kit.
Note: there's modified usb_mass.irx integrated into SMS. I've made it in
order to get my USB flash drive (Apacer Handy Steno HT202 128MB USB2.0)
working. Hot swapping apparently works also in my case. Any remarks are
welcome. NO WARRANTY THAT USB FUNCTIONALITY WILL BEHAVE PROPERLY WITH OTHER DEVICES.>
is that mean that although it supports USB, the creator didnt put the USBIRX in the program due to legal issue? so, if i put the USBIRX file on the mentioned
folder, i can fix that problem? (the program will search from the folder?)
Thanks
@zhac321: I can't distribute USBD.IRX because it is illegal to do that. You can use USBD.IRX shipped with some games or use free NPM-USBD.IRX. There were some discussions in this forum, so try also to find and read them :)...

Details of where to find & download USBD.IRX are in the user manual

err.. sorry again..
after i load USB icon from the menu, it crashes.
But after i access USB from other program, say, like PGeN,
then hard reset,(but not turn off) THEN i can access the USB in SMS without
crashing
is it something to do with my USBD.IRX? or my modchip?
its very tiring to 'program swap' everytime i want to watch my
20mins anime in my pendrive.
thanks
Mr. Worm~~

I think that driver search is in previous order, so instead of swap, you can have one in mc0:/BOOT/ for SMS and other in another location for other appz...I dont have USB driver so I cannot test...sorry, this is just an idea

After some trial and error I figured out how to get m3u support to work. For anyone else that was either encountering problems or would like to know:
Use a program to create an M3U playlist i.e. Windows Media Player.
Open the m3u in a text editor and delete the pathname i.e. "C:\My Songs\SMS.mp3" = "SMS.mp3" Do that for each song in the playlist.
Lastly make sure that all of the songs in the playlist and the m3u file are in the same folder.
Open the m3u file in SMS and enjoy!
Controls:
left/right - select songs (must wait for song to start playing in order to scroll to next one)
up/down - volume
select - pause
start - play (when paused)
triangle - return to browser
@Cordy: there're still some issues with m3u (sometimes it hangs, and I didn't figured out why yet). So, be warned (and the patch will come one day :)...

SMS used standard playlist, without path, I usually made them with WinAmp, and save in the same folder that songs are, about that "hangs" a short term solution is to use mp3 filenames as short as possible...;)

For SMS 1.5,What language is supported for Subtitle?
Does it support asian lang ?
@hip203: any language having 256 or less symbols in it's character set. In SMS I've hardcoded 4 codepages (see README/manual), but they can be substitued by placing font files on mc0 (see README/manual) :)

Then this implies support only (SBCS)Single Byte Character Set Codepages.(DBCS)Double Byte Character Set Codepages for chinese/japanese/korean character will not be able to be displayed !!
I have a question, previos version of Sms uses font from ps2 bios ......
If that the case,Is this possible to use font from ps2 bios to support SBCS & DBCS character option for subtitle?
:chinscrat
@hip203: yes, only SBCS. "...previos version of Sms uses font from ps2 bios...": yes, but it still used SBCS. Don't cry. Let's just think together how to implement it ;). Currently SMS uploads 224 font symbols (not taking first 32, which are supposed to be "control" characters) to the GS memory (4MB in total). It takes ~130KB of that memory to keep the font there. I think it's safe to use ~1MB (or even more) for the font using existing approach, so you can count how many symbols it will be. If there're dozens of thousands symbols to be displayed then a new approach should be implemented by dynamically loading font bitmaps somhow. That will require some redesign of things :). I'm noob in eastern languages, sorry for that...

I'm slowly looking thru SMS sourcecode ....!!:banghead::wow:
I have few more question.
1.)Is SMS based purely on c coding only..I saw some parts of the coding Remark as C ++ ,asemblly..etc..?
2.)How does PS2 dvd player and operating system ....able to display asian character set on subtitle option/menu option.... ?There should something underlaying the bios to prov DBCS support :chinscrat ?

I found a line of code ..found on Ps2 bios doucumentation that state.....ps2 bios contain an item call FontM..that will have all the font character that u need for all languages ...Perhaps subtitle option can direct feed from font of ps2 Bios.

Description of file format for 'FONTM' from the PS2 BIOS.
---------------------------------------------------------
adresd 2003.
Intro
-----
The FONTM file contains a PS2 Font, in a format which allows access to individual characters without having to upload a big font bitmap. As each character is stored seperately.
The font contains over 4000 characters, of all types and languages, and non-textual characters as well.
This allows flexible use and the characters to be used any way in which the programmer wishes.
The FONTM file is packed, the depack algorithm and example code have been provided by [RO]man on the site: http://ps2dev.pgamers.com/ in the file 'unpack.zip'.
Rather than duplicate it here, grab from there.
[Quick greet to [RO]man and the good work he has done :)]
This should be used to depack the file before trying to use the supplied extractor test program, or using it as reference to this document.
After hearing many people wonder about the format of these files and using them, as they quite like the fonts, I decided to write this short doc and example code.
I hope this is of some use to someone.
The fonts in the files I examined were all 4bit CLUT.
The CLUT does not seem to be included in here, and is probably elsewhere.
That does not matter too much as it seems an intensity based CLUT, so creating one will not be hard.
One thing to note, it has been pointed out that this file may not be consistent across ALL ps2 models, and may be a different format or missing on some models.
I do not have details of this, but until it is verified take this into consideration.
I've tested it on my SCPH-10000 (japanese) and SCPH-30003R (pal) machines.
It's also been tested on a SCPH-50000 (japanese) and SCPH-35001 (US).
Data Format
-----------
In this doc, uint32 means: 4 bytes, A,B,C,D
value = (A) + (B<<8) + (C<<16) + (D<<24)
The file contains a basic header
--------------------------------
4 ascii bytes 'FBJ2'
4 bytes, uint32, version
4 bytes, uint32, bitsize of file
4 bytes, uint32, baseoffset
4 bytes, uint32, num entries in the file
4 bytes, uint32, end of file position
Then follows the offset table
-----------------------------
Each entry is 4 bytes (uint32), making up an offset.
Take this offset add this to the baseoffset from the header, this gives the absolute offset in the file.
There are 'num entries' offsets in a list.
The size of each entry can be taken from the difference between offsets, and seems to be the same for all entries in the file. So calculate difference between first and second entries, and that will give the size.
Then follows the actual data for each character
-----------------------------------------------
This is 4bit CLUT data.
A line of the font graphic is 13 bytes.
each byte represents two pixels, so for 0x43 pixel 1 is color 4, pixel 2 is color 3.
This means each pixel can have one of 16 values, 0x0 -> 0xf
An example of a character is given below (NOTE:this is not from the actual file, but a madeup one).
This is shown in HEX notation, as it makes it really easy to view.

The example exporter/dump program
---------------------------------
I have included a program, which will dump out the characters from the font file to a ascii version. You can set in the code which chars to dump out, or all of them.
The ascii output is easy to view and I wanted to keep the src clean and easy to understand.
I leave it as a simple exercise for the reader to write these out as bitmaps.
Or to use the same format for similar data, and create new fonts.
Thats all folks,

My left analog stick always move to the right. Is there any way I can re-calibrate the PS2 during start up?

There is a procedure in the PS2 and dual shock manual to move the analog sticks in circles when you turn the console on. But it probably won't help. You may have to live with it or get a new controller.
BTW: this sub-forum is for SMS, not general How-To.

everytime the controller is plugged in, the control sticks Are "reset" to 0 position.
so if you plug in the controller while holding the stick to the right, it will think that position is 0 / netural.

Thanks! It tests fine. It looks like SMS scales the font so that it draws at a standard size though, so there isn't any difference to your original (besides saving a few bytes on the MC).

U need to put the USBD.IRX (just rename the one u have, and beware of the caps) file in one of the files that SMS looks for it. For more info regarding this u better check the SMS Manual (sticky thread). ;)

My turn to ask the question :D: I've got recently a new soundcard for my PC with optical input and I'd like to experiment with digital passthrough thingy and PS2. My question is about the cable: shall it be a special "PS2 original genuine thing from Sony" or just a "usual one"? If it's a "usual one" then another question: are there different types of such a cable (I mean connectors, not the length of it :)) or are they all the same? Did anyone actually tried to connect PS2 to a PC with soundcard supporting optical S-PDIF? Thanks...

I use the S-PDIF optical outputs on my ps2 to connect to my logitech Z5500's. Really you can use any digital fiber optic cable. As you noted the difference is the length and quality of the cable as far as wear and tear and audio passthrough. There is a digital optical cable made by monster for the ps2 but it makes no sense to go out of your way to get it when anyone will work. when I run SMS my speakers mix the audio in dolby digital pro logic II. My speakers are also capable of DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 which of course only work with DVD's and certain games.
@Cordy: thanks a lot. I'll definitely try it one day :)

Have you read the user manual? (sticky thread)
http://www.daveandzoe.plus.com/sms/HTML/en/usage-dvdr.html
Your question is sort of loaded as don't provide much information. Do you want to know how to boot an ELF boot without a modchip? Do you just want information on making a bootable DVDR? Or is the question about what format the videos need to be in?

I have a DMS4 Lite so I already have a modchip.
What I am asking is, how can I make a DVD-R that has my video files and the SMS so I can boot it off the DVD-R instead of booting it from the MC or HD, becuase I don't know how to do that.
rathunter
04-08-2006, 08:20 PM
You have a modchip, so search for a tutorial on how to make a bootable disk. You'll need to make a system.cnf file that points to SMS.elf renamed as 'SLUS_846.87' (for example) and build an image using CDGenPS2 or similar program. Add the movies to the image at this time too. A quick seach found this thread on these forums:
http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?p=308998#post308998
But there are lots of tutorials for this, many with pictures on the web.
I'll tell you this though, you'd be better off learning how to use the features of your modchip to boot off the MC or HDD. You'll find it easier. And instead of making a bootable disk with SMS, you should put uLaunchELF on it (or download one already prepared). That will give you an easy way to copy files to your MC and HDD.

..."rectangle" on the file (which is located on media other than HDD) :)...
i.e. pressing of the button "square" copies files from any media (usb flash, cd,dvd) on a hard disk, i have correctly understood ?
...the idea of "rectangle" is a context menu for browser "objects". Currently this menu has only one item (Copy to HDD). So, if there's a selected partition (i.e. you select HDD's partition and press "cross" (or "circle"), so you'll actually "enter" the partition) on HDD and you press "rectangle" while file is selected on "other" media a context menu will pop-up. This menu has currently one item, so if you select that item (it's selected already, since it's the only item) and press "cross" (or "circle") then selected file will be copied to the selected partition on HDD. It's just an experimenal feature (no free space check on HDD is performed, only one file a time, no copy of the directory tree), but it appears to be working here with ~690KB/s copy speed for network files...

Hi there,
Is it possible to plug my Hard drive into the PC via IDE and then transfer movies and music onto the hard drive, and then plug the hard drive into the PS2 and be able to play them through SMS?
Any help would be much appreciated, if this is not possible, i have seen above that you can copy files via SMS? Is this very reliable and what is the speed like, for say a 700mb movie from DVD or USB?
Thanks a lot everyone!

When you say that you "select it then try to run it" this clearly implies that you are using some other program to do this launching of SMS, and then we may need to know which program that is, to advise you on how to do it.
So, what is the program you are trying to use to launch SMS ?
And exactly how did you launch that program to begin with ?
(PS1 exploit, mod-chip Dev1 boot, mod-chip Dev2 boot, or something else ?)
Also, regardless of what boot method you use, please specify if you have a mod-chip installed, and if so what brand and model it is.

Hey does anyone know how to permanently set/change an audio delay of an XVID avi with MP3 or AC3 audio from a PC?
(And does SMS recognize or ignore AVI audio delay flags?)
For MP3, I know I could just add/delete .xxx seconds, but this involves demuxing and changing the audio file (losing a bit of quality), then remuxing, and would take a lot of time.
For AC3 (most of what I have), I have no clue...
All that if I'm even right in thinking that AVI/Xvid has an audio delay flag that can be changed very quickly.
Thanks all
rathunter
10-21-2006, 02:33 AM
@znoby
I don't think there is a delay flag similar to what you're speculating about. The way to permanently adjust an audio delay is to demux and mux, but there doesn't need to be any loss of quality. In VirtualDubMod, for example, set the audio stream to "direct stream copy" then go to the "Audio/Video Interleave Options" and input the appropriate "Audio skew correction" in ms (positive or negative). The stream is not decompressed, sot the original quality remains. This works for MP3 and AC3...good luck!

That question is off-topic here (has nothing to do with SMS), and also in the other thread where you posted it. The proper thing for you to do would have been to post a NEW thread in the uLaunchELF forum, asking for help with your particular problem. You should never clutter up existing threads dedicated to other subjects. But I will give you a brief reply here anyway.
If you really have ToxicOS, then simply put the uLaunchELF "BOOT.ELF" file on a USB memory stick or a normal CD, and then use the ToxicOS browser to launch it. Once it is launched you can use the FileBrowser of uLE to create the standard "mc0:/BOOT/" folder and copy the "BOOT.ELF" file into it, for use with Dev1 booting.
If you only have ToxicBIOS, then you'll need to make a normal boot CD for uLE, editing the "SYSTEM.CNF" file to launch the "BOOT.ELF" file of uLE. Since you mentioned problems with burning duds (in the other thread), make sure that you use the program CDGenPS2 to create the ISO file, which you can then burn with any CD burner program. Using such programs to directly create a PS2 compatible ISO can sometimes be tricky, which is why you should let CDGenPS2 handle that part.

Putting system.cnf and sms.elf into a directory doesn't seem a good idea to me.
Also setting LBA 12231 to the system.cnf is absolutely necessary, else the CD won't work at all.

Thanks to bladeanon for figuring this out! Also to dlanor for inspiring me by always helping others in the forum.
SMS can open .m3u playlists which contain references to files in several different directories if the m3u files are formatted correctly.
I have a slim PS2 so I use USB HDD or SMB (Windows shares) to play music with the PS2.
This example is based on MY music collection where the mp3 tracks are in the following structure (as seen in windows explorer)
D:\Music\Artist\Album\# - TrackTitle.mp3
Here's how I do it.
1. In Winamp go to Options->Preferences->General Preferences;Titles and enable "Read metadata when files are loaded into winamp" (this ensures the #EXTINF entries in the m3u will be correct for all files)
2. Open all of the files you want in your SMS playlist in Winamp's playlist
(Important: Only open files from the 'Music' or 'Music\Artist' or 'Music\Artist\Album' directories)
3. In Winamp's 'playlist editor' (Alt-E) click on 'Manage Playlist'->'Save playlist' Make sure 'Save as type' is M3U
4. Give the playlist a name and save it in the 'D:\Music' directory
(Important: DO NOT save or move the playlist to a different directory, it wont work)
(Explanation: Provided all the mp3's in the playlist are somewhere in the 'Music\' directory or its sub-directories, and the playlist is saved in the 'Music\' directory Winamp will save the 'relative' path-names to the files - the 'D:\Music' part of the full filename is NOT included in the M3U playlist. Because of this, SMS will be able to find the files in the playlist. SMS WILL NOT find files that have "D:\Music\Artist\Album\# - Track.mp3" style path names in the M3U playlist, they need to be just "Artist\Album\# - Track.mp3")
5. Use Notepad to open the playlist you saved in step 4
6. Go to Edit->Replace (Ctrl-H) and replace all backslashes "\" with slashes "/"
7. Save the playlist.
You can now fire up SMS and load the playlist!
Thank for explaining how to do that :) ^^^^
Ok, I have SMS v2.1 revision 2 installed and it runs just peachy...except it will not read media files from my USB pendrive.
The drive is read fine for other things (for example my Swap Magic will boot programs fine from the USB stick).
I have put the USBD.IRX file (the renamed one extracted from the zip file in the SMS manual link, section 3.6) in both mc0/SYS-CONFIG and mc0/SMS. I used the FileBrowser utility to copy and paste the file from the USB stick to the locations mentioned.
When I boot up and go into SMS the USB pendrive icon, as shown in the SMS manual is nowhere in sight.
Any ideas, cos it's a lot quicker transferring video files onto the USB stick and watching them through SMS that way than it is to burn the video files to a dvd which I'm only going to use once!
I've been at this for a couple of days now and I'm no further forward in getting SMS mass working than I was to start with
By the way, I really like this program - I was regretting getting rid of my old Xbox which I had converted into a media player, but this program gives the same functionality on my favoured ps2 :)

Ok, I have SMS v2.1 revision 2 installed and it runs just peachy...except it will not read media files from my USB pendrive.
Two possible reasons immediately come to mind:
1: You may not have formatted the drive properly. Use FAT32, not FAT/FAT16 or NTFS
2: You may have forgotten to configure SMS to use USBD.
Point 2 may need some extra explanation. In SMS use of USB is not mandatory, but optional, and when not used SMS will not even try to load the drivers for it. You need to configure this usage in the "Device Settings..." submenu of the main SMS menu, which you open by pressing the 'Start' button when the browser screen of SMS is displayed.
After you exit the "Device Settings..." menu, having enabled the "Autostart USB" option, you must also use the "Save settings" command, so that this usage will be remembered in the next boot session.
Since you didn't mention having made any USB configuration in SMS, I rather suspect that this is what you have missed doing.
I have put the USBD.IRX file (the renamed one extracted from the zip file in the SMS manual link, section 3.6) in both mc0/SYS-CONFIG and mc0/SMS. I used the FileBrowser utility to copy and paste the file from the USB stick to the locations mentioned.
SMS doesn't have any FileBrowser utility. Are you possibly talking about uLaunchELF (aka: uLE) here...?
In any case, modern versions of SMS should not need an external USBD.IRX anymore, since it uses the same IRX that uLE uses, which is in both cases embedded into the main program. Use of an external USBD.IRX is therefore optional and may in fact interfere with proper functioning, if the external one is less compatible than the internal one, which is often the case.
Any ideas, cos it's a lot quicker transferring video files onto the USB stick and watching them through SMS that way than it is to burn the video files to a dvd which I'm only going to use once!
Good point, but it's even quicker if you can network your PS2 to a PC, because then you can watch the video files without ever moving them from the PC HDD.
Best regards: dlanor
D'oh!
I'm an idiot - I actually had done that before but I didn't have the USBD.IRX file then....and then I had completely deleted the configuration file from the memory card and reinstalled everything via mc exploit...and guess what? Yep, I forgot to reactivate the USB autostart. Cheers for kickstarting my memory.
/me slaps forehead!
The filebrowser is LaunchElf, it's part of the exploit install. Anyway, you can use it to copy and paste files, which removes the problem I've read in this thread that some people have of actually getting the files onto their system - for example, if you can't FTP the files to your Station. Just copy the files to USB stick, compile and install an exploit using the Independence exploit compiler and then install it to the ps2. After that you can boot up via the exploit, open the config and then use the filebrowser to move the files from USB stick to wherever they are needed.
Oh, and as for DVD-RW disc - just buy a burner that supports bitsetting and set the booktype to dvd-rom when burning. After that, the Station will read them just fine :)
As to the speed issue - I could network the ps2 seeing as I have a HDD and network adaptor but why bother going to all that hassle when I can just transfer the video files or whatever to my 2gb USB stick and slap it in the Stations USB port? The only time that takes is the time it takes to transfer the files to the stick! Plus, this is more of a useful solution for those who are bereft of network adaptors but have a spare USB stick :)

All USB devices are not compatible. SMS doesn't use the exact same USB drivers from uLE, hence devices that work in uLE may not work in SMS. uLE has much greater compatibility with USB drives.
Reformat it with a single partition and try.
Btw.: Did you tested it, with only 1 Partition?
