...is available for download here (http://svn.ps2dev.org/filedetails.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2Fbin%2FSMS.elf&rev=0&sc=0). README contains following added lines:

Update (26-AUG-2005)
--------------------
- Ronald Andersson (AKA: dlanor) has added network (host) support
(thanks and regards to him):
- ISO CD/DVD support added (thanks to 'Mr. Worm~~' for real help in testing);
- Added MPEG2 unquantizer (fixes bad video quality issues in some cases)
(this thing is to be optimized with MMI, anyone can try his (her) skills
with MIPS/EE assembly ;) (thanks to 'koki373737' for his video clips);
- Added an ability to choose between interlaced and non-interlaced video
signal at program's startup (select-R1-square - for non-interlaced NTSC
and select-R2-square for non-intrlaced PAL);
- Attempt to fix "movie dimensions must be dividable by 16" issue. I've only
tested it with height of 396 pixels, but I hope that it will work in other
cases too (thanks to 'koki373737' again for his video clips);

Have a nice weekend

Hi Eugene,

Glad to know the videos helped. A few comments follow:

-The artifacts are gone! : ) Image quality is much better!
-DVDs worked flawlessly for me.
-If I use the non-interlaced option, I cant see the botton section of SMS "video selection" screen, but the flicker-video-problem is gone, and the video plays correctly (during playback it doesnt cut the lower part, the problem is only in the menu)
-The "jagged video" problem is still there, even with the non-interlaced option. Oh well, maybe Im seeing too much.
-When I run SMS it takes several seconds to pass the "Initializing network" phase...its normal ?
-I found another video that hangs SMS... it seems to be a "normal" xvid, but when I select it, SMS takes a looooong time "Checking" and then buffering. Then it plays normally for about 15 seconds and hangs. I´ll try to split it and upload to rapidshare.

Thanks again for the great work!

Marcelo

@koki373737: you can adjust picture position by using 'select-R1/R2/L1/l2' as stated in the README :). 'Several seconds to pass' is normal, I think (the network stuff looks for the 'host' server etc.) I've also tried to see that "jagged" stuff, but I'm just a blind (or maybe my TV is too old:)) - couldn't see it. Yes, sure, I can take a look at the movie (no promises :)). Thank you.

EEUG, dlanor and all the other persons in making SMS better and better: THANKS SO MUCH! :)

Version 1.4 is awesome. Playing all fine from CD, CD-RW, DVD-R here (it even have separated icons for CD and DVD! :) ). The host function is really great too! The use of the elflist.txt file with paths is just too good! Buffering still fast from CD/DVD and HOST (much faster than ps2reality, by the way... )

Good to see that this release gave some more fps with my few movies that are still not 100% full speed!

Now, the (few! :) ) bad news:

- The network initialization is 12 seconds long here. Even if ps2client is open befor the elf is launched, it never automatically show the host icon. I aways have to start ps2client after SMS is fully launched.

- The host feature still somehow unstable. Sometimes it hangs reading the directory listing of a big or deep path. I also don't know all the rules of "do not do x thing and then close ps2client"...

- Well, with so much possible sources for files, becomes much easier to test all my collection of avi's. Just found one with strange problems: low fps and echoing audio.

Video: XVID 640x272 23.98fps 972Kbps
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 448Kbps

Maybe because 272 isn't divisible by 32? Or because of b-frames?

I have uploaded a 8 seconds sample clip:
http://rapidshare.de/files/4414249/Spider_Man_2_dvdrip.xvid.cd2_sample_8_secs.avi.htm l

And, I really like to look at all this icons of sources of files!

@paulodeleo: I've checked your XVID. GMC motion (with 3 warping points) AND Q-Pel motions are main things that causes "low fps and echoing audio". I'm really doubting that Station will ever be capable to play it ;) (though GMC and Q-Pel are not optimized at all in SMS, I don't think that I could get MUCH performance increase by rewriting C code in assembly and MMI (roughly speaking, Q-Pel motions cause ~3-4x more calculations needed to produce final picture). Network:
- deep paths: quite possible, maybe I (or Mr. Ronald ;)) have to increase buffers to hold longer filenames;
- "12 seconds long here": I have 1-2 (though I use router in my home network). I don't know how to fix it, really (99% is that network driver .irx has to be modified to make SMS more robust with network things);
- the problem of movie dimensions seems to be solved in 1.4;

Eugene,

I did some more tests and couldn´ reproduce the "hang" of SMS using that video with an USB media... only with a DVD. Now Im not sure if its a DVD problem, the video or both :p
Also, when I mentioned that on non-interlace mode the botton section of the image was being cut, it wasnt because the image as a whole was too low... its because the image is too big : ) If I roll up the image, I loose the first section.

I kept having to look through the readme to find all the commands so I threw this list together for a quick reference. Figured it might help some others too:

SMS Commands:

At Startup:
Select-R1 for NTSC
Select-R2 for PAL
Select-R1-square for non-interlaced NTSC
Select-R2 for non interlaced PAL

Menu:
Triangle- up one directory level
Left or right directional- switch to device menu
Up or down directional- navigate files
Select+Circle- switch PS2 off
Select-R1- move screen right
Select-L1- move screen left
Select R2- move screen down
Select L2- move screen up
Select-Square- save current configuration to mc0:/SMS
Select-Triangle- exit to PS2 Browser

While playing a film:
Triangle- exit to file menu
Select- Pause (hit select again or hold for 200ms and the "Pause" message will disappear)
Start- Resume

@EEUG: feel free to include this in the readme if you want to make it faster for people to find commands.

On another topic I was wondering if the use of elflist was necessary for folders to work in host as even though the main folder I get listed through PS2 Client has subfolders when I try to select one I get the message it is an unsupported file type and to hit X..

@koki373737: you know, with PS2 homebrew it's quite difficult sometimes to understand reasons of failure. At the early stages of development I hit the problem of constant crashes etc. It was a bug in 'realloc'. Then the story with 'usb_mass'. Now networking issues and CD/DVD. Though I can relatively easy locate the problem of SMS itself, it's quite a challenge to do it for ps2sdk and drivers. I hope that everybody will understand me :)...

That happens to me too, even in uLaunchelf using the host function, and HAVE to launch PS2Client after SMS is fully launched, Thats the way it works, so in the relationship server-client, server must be enabled first. the 12 seconds I think. have to do with TCP timeout three way handshake, it takes time waiting acknowledgements.

- The host feature still somehow unstable. Sometimes it hangs reading the directory listing of a big or deep path. I also don't know all the rules of "do not do x thing and then close ps2client"...

Fisrt part, a little organization in PC HDD won't hurt ;)
Second part, before close PS2Client move in SMS browser to another interface, then your are free to close and reopen it without any hang, maybe in the future could be implement an automatic function to to this...

- Well, with so much possible sources for files, becomes much easier to test all my collection of avi's. Just found one with strange problems: low fps and echoing audio.

I think that in Brazil like in Argentina 99% consoles are NTSC but have 50Hz, have you try it in PAL-B mode, some TV sets have a multi PAL-N-M-B input compatible from A/V, will try your sample in both systems...
I cannot access to your icons, can you post them here? I'm interested ;)

Thank's for the explanation EEUG. Seems that it's the first time I see a real limitation to the project (hardware limitation, as ps2reality can't play this file smoothly too).

- "12 seconds long here": I have 1-2 (though I use router in my home network)

I use a 10Mbit router here. If it would be 100Mbit, this could take less time?

The country system is PAL-M, 60Hz, but my ps2 is NTSC. I don't think the problem with the playback of my uploaded clip have anything related to the video mode, as EEUG said.

I'm not sure what was understood about my comments, but I'm just saying that is great to see SMS with plug-and-play support and icons for HD, USB, CD/DVD and HOST devices. And just made a screenshot of my host setup for contemplation! :)

I just thought I'd drop in and mention I encoded a movie file at:
608x320 24fps divx6 codec
I used the divx converter and it chooses these settings automatically. Interesting thing is that it's able to be played back on both SMS & Mediaplayer Pro perfectly (streaming from pc). I double checked and it is encoded with the new divx6 codec however with a couple of tools and including mediaplayer pro it says it's using the divx5 codec. I am sure becuase on my computer which I have the codec installed it lets me use the divx6 codec features such as a menu etc... for the file. I was thinking maybe the codec is backwards compatible with divx5 so that it could be understood in older players as divx5 and just playback as normal but in divx6 compliant devices, it would utilize the new features of the codec. If any one else would like to experiment with that feel free. Just thought I'd post that information.

Yes this is correct... the newer codec has to be backwards compatable.... otherwise all those that have Divx capable DVD players would be SOL....

The only real changes that can be made with the codec now that it has been standardized is for encoding optimisations and a few non backward compatable features.

I'm DLing a copy of the player to test out... thanks EEUG for the great progress... shame that reality never gave much concern for the scene and never allowed for work like this to be done....

Hi all,
I've downloaded SMS 1.4 and I put it on my HDD, but when I try to read a video stored in a partition, SMS reads only the audio of film and a message appears has the screen ("audio only")

...Revision 1 can be obtained HERE (http://svn.ps2dev.org/filedetails.php?repname=ps2ware&path=%2Ftrunk%2FSMS%2Fbin%2FSMS.elf&rev=0&sc=0) . Changes (more "cosmetic" than real):

- 'usb_mass.irx' updated (thanks to 'hip203' for source code of 'LaunchElf');
- AC3 sound is made louder (thanks to 'Mr. Worm~~' for playing with it);
- slightly improved performance ("CSC - display" cycle (IPU code) is shortened
and some code is rewritten in assembly);
- removed "black bars" on the left and right sides of the picture for some movies with "incorrect" aspect ratios;

Nice weekend to everybody

He probably compiled his own from the SVN repository (that's where the open source is available), or got a test version directly from EEUG.

Whatever the case, you should always be able to get the latest version from the SVN. Read more about this over at http://ps2dev.org/.

mseut, you cant rewind or fast foward. these features are not implemented yet.

as for network, follow these instructions.

load SMS on the ps2, which is networked to the PC.
create a elflist.txt in the folder of ps2client.exe
the elflist.txt should have, on each line, a drive letter, for eg C:. this drive letter will be accessible from SMS.
run the command ps2client.exe -h 192.168.0.10 listen

A little network icon should appear on the SMS screen. select it, and browse for your movie!

...I was asked to avoid putting binary files to the SVN, so, from now I'll put it HERE (http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/). Rev.2 is basically the same as Rev.1 + support of DVD video disks (playing .avi files stored on it on unmodded consoles). A new CDVD.IRX has been written to support UDF filesystem (used on DVD Video disks). I'm not sure if I screwed up ISO CD/DVD support :), so "modded" users can check that. Source code is not in the SVN yet (I don't have time for integration).

When SMS read the partition where the divx are stored, it not read the divx in alphabetical order but in base of insertion order. It's possible to see the divx in alpabetical order in the next sms like with uLaunchElf 3.41k?

I've been testing with the following modifications in SMSGUI:
In HDD only show +Something partitions (only have media files there so there is no need for me to show others)
In the center menu only shows *.avi files without the .avi in files (again since SMS only plays .avi's it is error prune when trying to play some other file type, specilaly for kids) and alphabethically sorted, so only shows titles. And it is even more useful when browsing from network or usb...
All TKs to EEUG...;)

...I was asked to avoid putting binary files to the SVN, so, from now I'll put it [URL=http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/]HERE[/URL
Note you can also ask for an account on ps2dev.org's website (if you don't have a working one already) and upload the binary files there.

@Pixel: I knew that, thank you (oobles has kindly explained me the things :)). I just don't want to introduce an extra mess at ps2dev (someone has already put SMS's binaries "on ps2dev.org's website"), so having SMS.elf on my "site" would easy the things a bit :)...

@Chris Redfield: in fact such a functionality is already implemented in source code :). In binary release is is disabled (I've only enabled it for 'Mr. Worm~~' in his "personal" build). If you think that it is useful than no problem, I'll build next version with sort option enabled (now I don't have an access to PS2 and my work PC)...

could you please tell me where in the source i can enable it? so i can compile it myself for testing, thanks.

@mastaalien: add '-DBIMBO69' to the compiler's command line in 'Makefile' (very last line) :)...

...to make things clear: it's about filtering .avi, sorting them etc. It's not about FFWD/REV :). Sorry for being unclear...

Here you have 1.4rev2 modified...The Filtering&Sort is useful for me.
One more thing, if you use it in PAL mode may see the image a little enlarged. I need this correction to use PAL mode in my NTSC console. All other functions remains the same.

Select-R1-square for non-interlaced NTSC
Select-R2 for non interlaced PAL

@ddrfreak: you have to press buttons at startup, i.e. immediately after start and before any GUI will appear (you have 1 sec. to do that). About waiting: it depends on movie size and device speed (for network it takes ~5-10 sec. for average 700MB movie)...

load SMS on the ps2, which is networked to the PC.
create a elflist.txt in the folder of ps2client.exe
the elflist.txt should have, on each line, a drive letter, for eg C:. this drive letter will be accessible from SMS.
run the command ps2client.exe -h 192.168.0.10 listen

I have the PS2Client GUI, but I don't have the ps2client.exe file. Were can I get it. I've searched all over the net and nada... :banghead:

can some one upload sms1.4 pre rev1 elf please? I was able to load avis from usb through that. In the subsequent versions, I am not able to. And I had missed the elf of the working 1.4 pre rev1 version.

Thanks

O k i have this program running from all sorts of places and i cant get it to go past locating USBD.IRX...
where is the best place to put sms
do i have to have usbd.irx in the same folder
do i have to have a avi partition to boot sms...

Yeah thats about it I think.
