the solder bridge is on the edge of the head left of the ribbon cable and looks like a 2mm ball of solder

I would like to say that is what exactly happens with the solder bridge still intact. Both coils move up and down, the disc motor never spins. I can't remember but I think the laser diode doesn't light up either.

Thanks guy.. I found the solder bridge after summ0ne explained it.
I dont understand why they do that in the first place, add that blob.

its electrostatic protection so the lenses dont get burnt during transport and handling by electrostatic discharge - easier then to wrap them in baggies.

Can i be sure ive removed the bridge properly as long the laser works?

Just use some desoldering braid on the solder bead. Well you could use a desoldering pump, but I think the laser is a little fragile for it.

Solder pumps are crap, avoid - braid is much easier and safer to use.

since there a re no components around you can slide the solder off with the hot iron
