I think Aspect ratios would be a great feature mainly 4:3 Pan scan as still a lot of people have 4:3 tvs and trying to watch a widescreen divx movie is pretty hard
@wallacee: how should it work? Because of my stupidity I see only two possibilities to show widescreen movies on 4:3 TV:
- just resize the picture (StretchBlt :)), so everything in the picture will look squeezed in horizontal direction;
- cut some space from left and right to make 4:3 picture without distorting actual image;
Any other suggestions ?

I think cutting space from left and right is how pan scan is done (the panning part being done by an editor at the time of conversion).
Is it possible to include manual control of aspect too, without hurting performance? Like Select + D-Pad, to stretch the vertical and horizontal size. This would allow people to watch funny aspects ratios if they so choose, would help people with bad overscan on their sets, and would make it easy to watch for example a 20:9 AVI that had an incorrect 16:9 header.

[DONE! Don't know about UDF, but ISO is done] UDF/ISO filesystem support, that should include CDs and DVDs. Same as what paulodeleo suggested, but I'm just being more precise on it.
[DONE!] Non-host loading ability. The elf can run from a disc with media files or it can ask for discs with media files on them. In short, doesn't have to run from the memory card.
Fastforward & Rewind support.

I've been loading it from hard drive from the start.. Never had it on mem card.

Great work Eugene!
I would gladly see these features in your next releases:
1) skip forward/backward (10 secs)
2) subtitles (txt, srt, sub) with support for "regional" letters (like ąęćśżź ;) )
3) timer (e.g. 0:59:11/1:45:00)
4) more extended browser (supporting HDD/CD/HOST/USB) - more manual configuration (manual seeking of source).
That feature doesn't really matter for me (I don't have a modchip):
- CD/DVD reading support
I talked to GadgetFreak (author of WinHIIP). He plan to release new version in few weeks and it will support copying files to non-hdl partitions :) Can't wait to test it with SMS!!!

3) timer (e.g. 0:59:11/1:45:00)Yes, and OSD (on-screen display) would be nice. It could show the fps, time remaining, file currently playing & it's stats, etc.

I will try to work in non functional things such as:
Display only *.avi files in folders (do not show other filetypes like *.srt, etc)
Alphabethical order for *.avi files
Protected Partition (some kind of parental control)

So other that are not essential but really handy:
1) changing font/font size/rising of subtitles (or lowering if needed)
2) auto opening for multiCD movies (e.g. Matrix_CD1, Matrix_CD2) so there is no need to have a break in watching :)
3) transparent fonts (on/off) - not fonts but their background
4) osd would be really nice
5) open next/previous file
6) play all movies in current directory (for clips etc.)
7) /this one is REALLY handy!!!/ let SMS to make a small file (ini or something) containing info about last played frame, so when you stop watching a movie (e.g. after 1 hour), next time you start watching it again SMS will start playing it from that moment
8) shut down PS2 after the movie ends

My Favs:
Subtitlesupport
Playlist
Fast forward / rewind (dont care about the solution, if it is with forwarding, if it is with the ini file emcepl suggestet or if it (my favorite :p) with a option to jump to a min. like press button and then you can with up and down select hour, minute, second, press button and it jumps there.
Another req would be vbr mp3, but not sure if it works already, cause never tested it.
@mastaalien: VBR MP3 works (at my site at least :) );
@all: After ISO CD implementation (not quite soon :) ) I'll try to make a poll based upon this thread, so, at least, we'll have a list with priorities. Please, don't expect that things will happen soon, but, anyway, thanks to all of you for having interest in SMS (I never thought that it will turn up like that)...

would be sweet if we can copy the movies from a cd done with cdexplorer to the harddisc.

Not a must or a do it now, but automatic shutdown would be great. I thought this might be easy to implement since there is already a control command to turn off the console. Either a timer or more likely a shutdown on end of clip would be awsome. Thanks for sharing all your work EEUG!!
@mastaalien: harddisc of PC or PS2? First case is possible (just right-click file in CDXplorer and select "Copy to...") :) (I don't remember it you should do a right-click only on the left pane, right one or both)...

Ps2 Harddisc.
Cause sometimes i burn a cd with cdxplorer to test the movie filme, and if it works, would be great if i can then copy them to the ps2harddisc.
maybe the coder of ulaunchelf can take a look at it sience it already have copy code.
but after all its just a little request :)
...maybe the day will come when I (or someone) will implement this functionality. Thank you :)...

I managed to make an iso with SMS and AVI that can be run from HDL. Unfortunately, SMS doesn't see ISO files and you can't copy files from HDL partition to HDD. CDs made with cdxplorer or PS2CDGen can't be run from HDL (or am I wrong?).
So I think, that ISO filesystem support should solve the problem of slow FTP connection and lots of wasted CDs :)

No not really, cause normal cds done with ps2cdgen can't be read yet with sms and what is more important, can't be read without swapdisc or modchip.

You didn't get my idea right...
I didn't mean burning a normal ISO CD but making an ISO-image with avi and sms to copy it with WinHIIP and then run it in HDL. That way you can transfer 700MB avi file in 30secs, not 70minutes as with FTP.

ah ok understand your idea.
but with my request it wasn't the goal to solve it with hdl, cause copy from a cd is for me fast enough for a movie, so i don't have to restart pc when i attach ps2hd to my pc. only copy like 4gb games with tools like winhiip, sience i dislike to restart my pc often cause its kinda server

Unfortunatley HDL works by forcing its own driver to replace the normal one for both CD and DVD, thus making it impossible to access the physical CDVD drive in any way. All attempts to do so will be redirected to the ISO HDL is using on HDD.
This means that there is a choice between compatibility to HDL ISOs, on the one hand, or compatibility to real CDs and DVDs on the other hand. There is no way you can have both in the same program at the same time. And if you have to choose, I'll definitely vote for the real disks.
With some programs it is possible to use HDL ISOs when launched by HDL, and normal ISOs when launched in other ways, but there are many complications that can hinder this. One such thing is the need for an "IOP reset" to clean up the IOP module system at start of a complex application like SMS. This is also used by LaunchELF (for example), but there it is a configurable option which can be enabled or disabled (requires reboot to take effect though). However, just to keep this an option, we had to add tons of code to fix potential module conflicts. So it's not really as easy as some people think.
We'll just have to wait and see how this turns out for SMS. In any case, there's no way to test it until EEUG has finished the basic ISO implementation of SMS.
Edit: Ooops! With all the text above, I STILL managed to forget stating my own personal opinion on this...!!!
My opinion is that no support for HDL ISOs is really needed, as SMS has native HDD support. There is no need then for a 'faked CD/DVD' system just to achieve HDD speed. And since a future version of WinHIIP is already planned to have the ability to copy directly to APA partitions (the normal file partitions of PS2), the "fast copying" argument will soon 'evaporate'. So investing a lot of time now on HDL compatibility would be wasteful.
Best regards: dlanor

Unofficial LaunchELF works great when running from HDL iso.

...my last words for today: just made ISO CD support (presumably) :). At least now SMS can browse PS2 game CDs and DVDs. I hope that users with modchips will be able to watch movies using this new feature soon (weekends become a traditional days for new releases). I might be getting my hopes up with this one :p and it doesn't worry me too much, but hey I'll ask anyway, it could just be a bug.
Now that SMS has AC3 (*see below question) support would it be possilbe to output it in Dolby Digital 5.1.... whatever, like most DVDs have? As I have a surround system hooked up to me PS2 via the optical port and play games in surround (prologic), DVDs in 5.1, Vice city in DTS :D.
I have no idea how AC3 - DD5.1 - sound systems (ie mine) work, when watching a dvd does the ps2 simply pass the AC3 sound to suround systems decode, or does the ps2 decode the AC3 and pass the 5.1 channels to the system  If anyone can provide me with links/info I'd be happy to research and report my findings to EEUG for POSSIBLE addition to SMS.
I realise that the sound is based on "insert name here" (<-- Can't think of it) which was made by "insert different name here:P" (<-- again can't think), which could possibly be the basis of this problem and to implement my idea could require a whole new sound driver.
Regards Andrew (aka Taz030485)
* How are 5.1 channel AC3 stremas distributed in SMS? simply left and right output and surround ignored or center split to either side and rear mixed with each side respectivly? :chinscrat
...now AC3 samples are muxed to 2 channels (using the original ffmpeg's/liba52 code) before travelling to 'audsrv' driver, since it supports only stereo and mono. Making 5.1 sound requires:
1. Documentation about SPU unit(s) (none are publicly available at the moment);
2. Recreation/extension of 'audsrv' (this relies on 1.);
3. Availability of "surround system hooked up to me PS2" AT MY SITE;
4. As alternative to 1., 2., and 3. it can also be any REALLY WORKING EXAMPLE :), so I can try to make it without 3. and annoy somebody with various test programs (this way I'm progressing now with ISO CD/DVD features);
Best regards
Eugene
P.S. By the way, by looking at the source code of 'audsrv' I can conclude, that SPU has 2 "cores" with 2 channels each (one core was source of 'buzzing' noise since it was not muted), so, we have 4 channels. Audsrv uses only one "core", so we're getting mono or stereo. By using both "cores" we can get 4 sound channels, so I can play with that, but I don't have any "surround system hooked up to me PS2", so my playing will be just a waste of time :).

Makes sense (arrg at sony  )

Again makes sense (refering to 1 also  :p)

PICK ME, PICK ME :p I'd be more then happy to test for you IF you do decide to work on it and get something working

2 cores with 2 channels each, how does the ps2 do 5.1 then? (just me wandering, not related to topic)
I am currently searching for some info about 5.1, surround, etc and found that some sound cards have "Dolby Digital passthrough" meaning they pass the DD signal to systems with inbuilt decoders as opposed to directly sending the snalog signal to 6 connected speakers. I'll do some more research one this but I'm thinking (if possible) pass the ac3 sound straight out the optical port and have the system handle it (Note: a side effect of this would be no sound out the standard AV (happens for some games with DD, MGS2 ;)) and those without a system would hear nothing, so a configureable option of DD output would have to be implemted, again IF this does get taken further)
- "2 cores with 2 channels each, how does the ps2 do 5.1 then?" - see 1. :);
- "pass the ac3 sound straight out the optical port" - same as above + absense of documentation about IOP (how on earth I can output something to the "optical port") :);
For me personally it appears more guessing work then programming itself. Yes, I know, it would be really nice to have such a feature, but...
Edit: "really working example" means that I'd like to have such an example, not making it :D

Possilby Dlanor or E.P. could add CDDAFS to uLaunchElf that way people could use it to copy any data from cd to hdd on an unmodifed console leaving SMS for playing media
...it's pretty easy to do, since CDDAFS code is not linked to other parts of SMS (well, maybe it uses some constants, I'm not sure). Moreover it's directly compilable on WIN32 also (CDXplorer uses just the same file (FileContext.h/.c)) :)...

Well, you've already got iso cd/dvd support, which is great :)
I know it's on your mind, but just to restate the request ... The ability to boot the player from CD (using a modchip, obviously).
There's still a hell of a lot of users out here without HDDs or the ability to connect via host.
Apart from that, great work so far ! Even though I can't use the player yet, I've been following it's (*fast*) progress with great interest :)

Apart from that, great work so far ! Even though I can't use the player yet, I've been following it's (*fast*) progress with great interest :)
You can always do it as any homebrew, just build a cd using CdgenPS2 add the SYSTEM.CNF and SMS.ELF files, and if you want you can add a movie too, use caps on for all files & extensions. See attachment.
Waiting for your comments...

Got it to work booting from the CD using CdgenPS2. I just draged in the system.cnf, SMS.elf and a test avi file. It worked after searching for the network for and minute or two then it searched for media i.e. and I was able to browse the cd and load the avi. Loaded and played fine. This was using a CD-RW on a V12 and Matrix Infinity v1.54 if anyone wants to know.

Now that version 1.4 have CD/DVD reading, ( ) I must ask what is the priority to new features... next on my list (looks that is being followed or just coincidence? :) ) is subtitles, something really important to people that english is not the native language, like me, here in Brazil.
About international characters like (á,é,Ã*,ó,ú,ç,ã...) being unavailable from the internal PS2 bios font used by SMS, i think it could be possible to use them, as they're used when the bios language is in Portuguese, for example:
http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/2821/ps2biospt4qp.jpg
Noticed the words "Configuração" (Settings), "Relógio" (clock) and "Opções" (options)?
About some code to start, someone at another thread pointed the source or mplayer, that seems to be very portable.
That's my wish for a new feature for SMS now. With that, I'll NEVER have a reason to use ps2reality again! I can live without fast forward & rewind, but not without subtitles... :-pray:
...as I stated earlier, it's quite possible to combine ' and o to get ó etc. No problem with that. I'll create a poll about future features, don't worry, so we'll set priorities ;)...

Some sugestions : )
- I think it would be neat if SMS could "learn" its settings like wheather it should use interlace or not (you probably would have to add a key combination that would turn on interlace mode again), the screen position, etc, and could store this info on a conf file, so you dont have to configure it each time. Also, would be possible to only "Initilize Network" if you select network on the media types? Then you dont have to wait each time you load the program.
Thanks!
Marcelo
@koki373737: select-square saves your settings to mc0:/SMS :). About network: will think about it.

I'd just like to say thanx for a great player, can't complain. network loads in 1-2 seconds for me and all other device options are great. Aside from some of the features such as ff rw that can be implemented in the future, I was also thinking ahead. I was thinking if it would be possible to add mpeg support in the future although I'm well aware divx/xvid are widely popular formats nowadays. Also on the divx end, I was wondering if you were aware of the divx6 codec and if you planned to implement it in the future, because I know you said you really didn't prioratize to add old divx support such as divx3 and wanted to keep it with mostly new and used ones.

eeug, i'm courious. sience "Christmas tree items (OSD,volume control, FFWD,REV etc.)"
leading the poll would it be difficult to code a "jump to time" code, cause i think ffwd and rev would be harder to code? (maybe its simpler, don't know). for viewing plesaure it would be better i think. cause ffwd when you already watched half of a 90min video would take long, and a jump to min 46 as example would be smoother. and with such a code the request about saving the movie in between (was requestet somewhere in this thread) wouldn't be that hard.
but after all like always it's just a little brainstorm ;)
...well, I'll wait for 1 week before doing someting further (let's give everybody a possibility to vote :)). Then we'll see. FFWD and REV: first one is pretty easy to do. Second one is quite tricky mainly due to the fact that SMS uses rather big queues for AVI packets (we have to put a rear gear while we're travelling at full speed :)). I think for both of them displaying only keyframes is a reasonable solution (only in this case we'll get REV functionality at acceptable speed). Anyone is free to try (SMS_AVI.c must be modified in the first place to store timestamps for audio packets (currently it stores only video timings there) :)...

As I mentioned in the "foggy future" thread I think a confong screen would be a nice additon. I made simple screenshot for a suggested layout and options.
To bring up the option the user would simply press 'select' while in the browser view and change what they want, this also makes it easier for people so they don't have to remember specific button presses
The video modes are pretty self explanitory, but also being able to select NTSC on a PAL console (if the connected TV supports it) instead of always using PAL. And being able to turn interlaced on or off (If it requires a restart add it as a side note) and pressing the change position would allow the user to simply use the d-pad to move the screen around.
The decode AC3 option is for those with suround sound systems connected with the optical port to make SMS not decode the Dolby Digital signal and let the connected system do it (J.F. at PS2Dev is kindly looking into this ;), Optical out and AC3 (http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=3125))
And the save settings to option lets the user choose where to save the settings to and on load SMS just checks each dir for a settings file the same way it does for USB.IRX (saves having a save folder for just one file ;)) and with ISO CD/DVD support settings (as well as USB.IRX and IPCONFIG.DAT) could be loaded (not saved, for obvious reasons) from there too.
If anyone can think of any other options or a different layout, post it and we'll let EEUG decide on what to do :p

yesterday I do some test with SMS,

I find that certain movies
the sound is noize.
I tested with another film and the sound did not noize any more.
I wanted to try with another media to make works the same video and the sound is good
I do not know if you already have this symptom of sound but can you deliver your opinion to me.
Have you need the informations by gspot of me movies with i testing ?

thanks :)
@kazuya.akira: PM has been sent :). Concerning USBD.IRX: its location must come to so-called "configuration screen", which might be implemented in the future;
@all: could somebody create 'virtual keyboard' (like HDLoader one, for example) in order to enter something. All the things necessary for it is in SMS already (character and line drawing functions, gamepad state read etc.). It would be a real help :)...

I'm thinking a little bit further, about config/mode screen, so try to aticipate on what you want from SMS in the future.
As an entertainment application dont try to pretend as a system app.
For example:
CONFIG SCREEN:
System Startup: PAL/NTSC/Interlaced/non-Interlaced mode
Screen position: Up/Down/Left/Right
Playback mode: avi/mp3/???
Save Settings
PLAYBACK SCREEN:
PLAY/PAUSE/STOP (Implemented)
FF/REW
Chapter Navigation (3-4 min per chapter) or Analog Navigator
Volume control
Height Analog ZOOM
16:9 / 4:3 / 4:3 PAN Resize
Continuous Play for all files in folders (per type, avi/mp3/???), like an automatic playlist
MAIN MENU:
Show files per type alphabetically ordered without extension filtered also in different colors (avi: yellow / mp3: green / ???: blue) with different Icons at top like the media interfaces (HDD/HOST/Etc.), deppending on media type selected.
Not playable files have no reason to be displayed in menu
Maybe is harder to do, but It'll anticipate to future implementations and the code will be ready for, any idea???
HypERSoniC
08-29-2005, 09:40 PM
maybe have a filter button when browsing for AVI, rather than an option in the settings screen.
when you press this button, only AVI's will be displayed.
also, there should be a button which switches mode from AVI to MP3.
in AVI mode, AVI files are displayed from +AVI. in MP3 mode, MP3 files are displayed from +MP3 (ensure compatability with PS2MP3)
I also propose a univeral partition for media files. +MEDIA
/AVI would be used to store movies, for avi players like SMS
/MP3 would be used to store music, for mp3 players like PS2MP3
Mr. Worm~~
08-29-2005, 09:56 PM
You can use any partition and can filter as you wish, so you can organize movies/music as you want, actually SMS is not a mp3 player...but in the future...who knows, an integration would be possible.
Is there a need to see files that you cannot play??? just to see, the "non supported format" display
Take a look at this in post #28

Eugene you don't need to say "thank you". I am the one who have to say thank you. Because you're developing something for free. That's the spirit everyone should have. That's a great quality in you.
I really would like to help you developing new features but my programming skills are terrible at the moment. I'm only good at network administration (just not THAT good, i'm still learning and learning), all I can do are some shell scripts and silly programs. But maybe I could go deep into programming. PSS support!?!?!?
PSS files are just mpeg2 video with SS2 sound (SS2 sound is a sony made format and can either be uncommpressed or compressed)
So if EEUG gets MPEG video working he would just need to add support for SS2 then we can play PSS files, tho I personaly would convert it to Divx/mp3 anyway. Google "PSS demux" to find the program I use.
can I ask for boost volume ? max volume is still low for me.
at least compare to how high PS2 games volume.

Well, I would've suggested just removing them but figured some people may use them. I justg hate accidently hitting it when I can't remember what the buttons do :)
A return to boot.elf should work ok, if you use uLaunchElf program execution code or something when you do it (I'm not sure as my ExitProgram function that executes boot.elf uses ps2menu's method of running an elf so I don't know if it'd cause conflicts to do it that way).
@hip203: new codecs and stuff like that are not "Christmas Tree Items", so they would be taken into consideration later (democracy rules :));
@KaylaKaze: not a problem for complex button combination. It requites just a single change inside GUI.c (button code), so I'll let you to do that ;);
@KallaiR: well, launching other applications is out of scope of SMS. But the feature you've requested is quite interesting for those who uses exploit (including me :). Refer my reply to "hip203".
@skidude2121: cool idea !!! Totally agree and I'll try to put an option...ehhh...what whould be a good short menu title for "Shutdown console after end of the movie"?
@paulodeleo: yes. Use bin2c utility to produce data array for your USBD.IRX. Then put it to the SMS_Data.c, adjust SMS.h (array size for your new driver exactly the same way as for other drivers) and SMS.c (replace code that looks for USBD.IRX by a single call to SifExecModuleBuffer (like for other drivers in the same file). Not so hard, just be very careful.
Thank you

I think something like this would be most suitable:
Shutdown Timeout (Minutes): 2, 5, 10, 15, 30, Off
Sleep Mode: On, Off
i'm not sure you'd even need something like 'sleep mode', as 1 or 2 minutes would be ideal for in bed, as it would be off very soon after the movie... but would also allow those still awake to start up another movie if they wanted..

@skidude2121: cool idea !!! Totally agree and I'll try to put an option
If you're implementing a timeout, perhaps now would also be a good time to use that code in a function for dimming the screen (or blacking it, or triggering a moving logo etc). Users with projection TVs especially, need to consider screen burn during Pause and while sitting at the browser. http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showpost.php?p=285133&postcount=102
Possible setting strings:
Auto-shutdown console (on/off)
Timeout (minutes): (2, 5, 10, 15, 30)
Screensaver (on/off)
Also, do you want an action in the browser settings menu to set the default partition (I always forget the key combo) or directory (new functionality)? Possibly:
Save as default path
DAAP - Digital Audio Access Protocol
HTTP://daap.sourceforge.net or HTTP://www.opendaap.org/

I work with the PS2 SMS client GUI and I have a little issue with it.
Could it be possible to create a loop for launching the network until a reaction of SMS. That would prevent a lot of walks between my PC and the living room,
because firstly I like to mount the movies .
Well, this is a Server-Client method, that SMS uses it. SMS is the server (waiting for connections) and PC is the Client. As any other network with this type of relationship, server has to be ready to receive client conections, so if you restart SMS need to restart client to, that means more walks. One more thing there is no client standby feature to overcome this issue and there isnt source-code for this client...and for what I heard never will be one for this client...Maybe someone can make a client to make our lives easier...:D

Hey Radad, what are you doing??? Why don't make some advertising for your prog???
So, i'll done for you: ;)
"Rad Host Client is a GUI tool to provide the pc side of the ps2 host filesystem protocol. I have written this to make it easier to use than the ps2client for people who simply want to use it with ps2 software such as uLaunchELF and SMS."
and more important :wow:
"It automaticcaly connects to the ps2. As you change programs from uLaunchELF to SMS it will automatically attempt to reconnect."

Great piece of software!
But someone sooner or later will ask how it works, so:
1 - Put the ps2 ip address at the text field.
2 - Drag some folders to the "Root Virtual File System" area.
If SMS network is initialized, then the status bar will show "Connected".

When ffwd/rrwding would it be possible to show a multiplier. ie 2x, 4x, 8x, etc (or whatever values would be appropriate) as I loose track of how many times I've pressed the left/right button. Also could there be a goto time option to save ffwding over an hour of video?
Final note: Where is my name in the credits for the the options/config screen, I posted (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showpost.php?p=279202&postcount=85) about it ages ago  :p

I was just messing around, if u want to put my name in you can:p (YAY MY NAME'S GOING TO BE IN SOMETHING:D )
I recently setup the ps2dev enviroment and compiled the latest SMS from SVN:dance:. I could search through the code myself but it would save time if you could point me to some areas of code I could see if I can mess around with AC3 and Optical.
: Where the AC3 stream is read
: Where the audio is sent to the SPU
The SPU apparently can handle AC3 data itself (ie output it out the optical) so sending the AC3 stream directly to the SPU could work. I'll try my best to get something working, but if u do try anything I'll be more then happy the test for you.
@taz030485: I'm really doubting that the process is that simple: "send AC3 data to SPU and you'll get a digital sound" :). I think, before fiddling with SMS it's much easier to create a small test program that sends AC3 data directly to SPU. All the functionality is there, so for me it would take 1-2 hours to make such a program. All I need to have is raw AC3 file (so it will be sent directly to SPU). Just a small quiestion: is optical output activated by default or it must be activated from the program (how?)? How SPU would know where to output the data: optical output or composite output?...

Optical is activated from the broswer config, if it's on the SPU will output sound out the AV and Optical, if it's disabled then just AV.
I know when the SPU gets DTS it only outputs to Optical and PCM data to both, but not quite sure about AC3, I know it comes out the optical but am not sure if comes out the AV at the same time. (I'll put a DVD in later and see)
My MSN is taz030485@hotmail.com if you want to talk or ask something;)
...SMS is able to decode AC3 itself :). And its audio part is based upon information and source code I found at ps2dev. There's nothing about getting digital sound from PS2. Without such an information it will be just a guessing work. Well, there's another way, of course, by making an attempt to reverse engineer (disassembly) some application which makes digital sound from AC3 data. Do you want to make a try? (I don't :))...
taz030485
11-22-2005, 04:20 AM
I know SMS decodes AC3, I used it today, I was just thinking outloud.
I'll do some searching and let you know if I find anything. You just keep working on what you doing :P
...it would be really appreciated :). Well, I think 1.5 will be the final version for .avi/DivX (it far exceeded my own expectations, really, and all these "Christmas Tree Items" are absolutely not interested for me :)) (but if you'll find a way to make a digital sound then it will be immediately implemented). Next I'll try to implement .mpg support with help of IPU unit (maybe I'll try to optimize SMS further)), but that will be another (veeeery long) story :). And I'll be glad to see SMS's evolution with help of other programmers/enthusiasts...

from my point of view, the GOTO function only could be implemented with the SOny Remote Control, that has numbers...How to do that with PAD that is limited in buttons??
Furatudo
11-22-2005, 03:00 PM
well, It would be possible and would be a nice feature.
How to do it? well, this is just me thinking:
When u press a selected button on the Gamepad the movie pauses and some kind of "window" pops up on the screen for you to enter hh:mm:ss. it starts on the first "h" character, with the up and down arrows u select a number from 0 to 9. Then u press the left or right arrows to go from one character to another and u do the same for every char. When done u just press X and the movie goes to the position u chose.
This could also be done without a new window poping, could be done with a timer that appears on the corner during the movie playback.
There are 2 main problems anyway:
- As EEUG said on another thread, only the R2 and L2 buttons are not assigned to anything yet, I guess EEUG might be planing to use them for another something else.
- There would have to be some way to control the user input to avoid entering a time longer than the movie itself, but I don't think this would be so hard...
Mr. Worm~~
11-22-2005, 05:27 PM
well, in that case the use of FF/REW will be more efective and faster. The only option I see for the moment is to make a timeline bar from pause and browse over that (maybe using analog joystick) Buttons are very limited, and functions to implement are PAD dependent, so the option to choose one over another...
Furatudo
11-22-2005, 05:39 PM
Well, I guess that would work too. Maybe it isn't as precise as the method I though of but it doesn't have the problem of ocupying more buttons on the gamepad =)
Let's see if EEUG (or someone else who can code for the PS2) is eager to implement that function, even though it's not a "primary concern" atm since we already have the FF/RW functions ;)

SELECT - Enable Subs
L2 - Sub Delay -0.5 Seconds
R2 - Sub Delay +0.5 Seconds
LEFT / RIGHT - REW/CUE, if paused, bring up timeline seek bar.
X - Play/Pause. if paused and user has used the timeline bar to seek, play from the speicified location

MPEG/MPEG2 are wide spread standards. They would be easier to implement then WMV/RM. I have lots of vids in MPEG/MPEG2 :). OGM/MKV are container formats so it's not a big deal with them. All in all, we'd all like to see SMS support all of those formats. :D No hurry EEUG...

Does a scroll-bar to set movie's position interest somebody ???
That can be done from future playing menu (V1.5).
When menu is launch, scroll-bar will appears .
Right or left buttons will set position's movie.
When menu is close, movie will start playing from the new position.
( EEUG suggestions )
Your opinion interest us, so don't hesitate to answer. ;)

Hi --
Not a dig, I love SMS, but as I've mentioned before MediaPlayer Pro produces much higher quality (no jaggies) video output in the menu system and when playing movies in NTSC_I mode. Either MediaPlayer has a custom graphics driver of some sort, or they are throwing a PS2 graphics switch that is not enabled in SMS.
EEUG, as an example here are two screen shots that show the Warner Brothers logo from the same movie, in NTSC mode on both SMS and MediaPlayer. This is to show that I'm not just imagining things. ;)
It illustrates what I was saying about the better graphics playback in MediaPlayer. Just an example for thought -- I don't know if anything can be done.

Does the non-interlaced mode of SMS give better results?
Mr. Worm~~
12-07-2005, 08:35 PM
I can use both and can see the difference between PAL/NTSC part of it is intrinsec system behavior, for the other part some fix should be applied if possible, but it will be time consuming and testing over and over...and that happens with GS (Graphic Screen) too...~~
Btw, Switching off until next week, for working...;)
@bandor: I don't have NTSC TV :). Maybe I'll take a look at the problem one day ;)...

Same jagged stuff happens to me. I mention about this a while back with the vertical black bars issues. I though that because earlier SMS squeeze the resolution on NTSC that's why the pictures are jagges, but appearenntly it's not.
I tried both the interlaced mode and the normal one, both produce same result.
EUGG, you have any idea why? Is there any mention about this on ps2dev site?
[edit]
Although before the verticle black bars issue was fix, the jagged picture was worse. After the fix it's a bit better, but the problem is still there
@Stand: no, I don't have any solution at the moment. So far on my PAL TV I didn't see that bad quality pictures as on screenshots from this thread.

12-08-2005, 06:20 PM
Radad1: Non-interlaced mode only displays every other line on the screen so it looks even worse. You may have seen PS2 games that go into this mode to give the illusion of higher resolution and faster frame rates but with gaps between the video lines.
EEUG: Thanks, I can understand that you don't have the proper video output to test NTSC very well. If anyone has any thoughts, looking at the SMS source, please speak up. I don't know whether we are missing a variable setting or a whole video mode that the PS2 is capable of. I played around and tried to enable the anti-aliasing variable that I saw in the SMS source code for the NTSC mode, but no luck. SMS is an awesome tool, but it's agonizing that the video output could be sharper.
taz030485
12-08-2005, 06:40 PM
Could it be a video resolution problem? Scaling up or down could be what it distorting it? Maybe try a video who's resolution exactly matches output resolution and see how it looks?

No Radad1, I'm reporting things correctly (as SMS displays them):
NTSC_I mode has no gaps between lines and produces the highest video quality (as shown in my screen shots), but still has a big "jaggies" problem
NTSC mode has gaps between the lines -- every other line is drawn on the screen.
Do you have an NTSC device? You should be able to see this for yourself.

DVD+R/W is the same as DVD+R to SMS, but not many PS2 consoles can read it. I've used DVD-R/W in my v7. In any case, I would strongly discourage -/+RW even if it does work because it is hard on the laser, and will burn it out quicker than DVD-/+R. If you want a temporary medium for AVI's, I recommend a USB drive, HDD, or networked computer.

What about an option to tell SMS where the USBD.IRX file is located? (instead of just looking for it on mc0: or host: ) This way we could put it on the HDD, as it would be more practical. myPS2 lets you do that.
I'm asking this because on the HD there's lot of free space and sometimes not much on the MC.
@ZakSpeed: for that someone (maybe I :)) has to implement "virtual keyboard" in the first place to get more advanced input from user. The coming version won't support that (sorry), but future one(s) - maybe :)...

Thanks all who has taken a hand in an exit of new version of SMS. Support
of subtitles which I so for a long time waited, has surpassed all my expectations. That would be desirable for the only thing, is less strict requirements to mistakes in sub-titles. Poorly that SRT subtitles not
loaded in general if in any line the mistake is found out. I think, that there should be less strict rules to loading subtitles. It is better to not see one line, than to be refused to see them completely.
@EEUG: I Was played with adjustments Display Settings.. also have noticed, that on some films the geometry of the image is correctly displayed only in mode NTSC, in PAL and auto we have the image compressed on a vertical, it concerns also that fragment which I to you sent. And with quality of a picture as a whole too there are problems, it is especially appreciable on animation films. The broken lines, it is similar on PS2 RMP in a low quality mode. At inclusion fullscreen smoothings, the picture looks unpleasantly for eyes, is too dim, and subtitles look also is dim. And it is not absolutely understandable, that the option auto in Display settings means, impression such, that she does not work. And all negative, in the rest all is wonderful. Once again Happy New Year 2all !

you can use also a custom font, I saw some examples for cyrillic in previous post
The current font is seems sutable for me. I meant, when smoothing mode is turn on, the subttitles is looking greased (smoothed) too. It is wrong, as i think.
More important thing, as i thought, to do less stricted error parsing in srt subtitles. I don't know, how to checks subtitles on errors, i think they must be loaded without dependence from that they have mistakes or not.

Certainly, I am understand, but does we need smoothing for browser and subs ? For what purposes ?

thank's for advice, but what do i do with a heap of DVD-r whith hundreds of anime subtitles, checking them ? rewriting ? Jet Audio or PS2 Media Player don't ask me about "errror in 31 line", they just play them. :banghead:

Soften is same function as Sharpness in TV, so applies to all image...is not selective...maybe in the future will be a graphic screen redisign...maybe not..
Calm down, about subs just post here some examples (only the subs files)...As you may know I spaek spanish as my natural language so 99% of movies have subs...And I have no problems at all with them...
You asked for a tool to check subs, and I show you the best one ;)

I do a lot of translations and most of the people I know use the frame-based format SUB, instead of .srt. A lot of srt files have errors due to the ignorance of the people playing with them or playing being a translator/"editor".
Most programs (filters) would accept upto 3 to 5 lines per subtitle in a .sub format, but ONLY THREE in a .srt. The correct format is:
INDEX (consecutive numbers starting from "1".. You can't have 221 and then 223)
START_TIME --> END_TIME
line 1
[line 2]
[line 3] --- you're not allowed to have more than 3 lines in .srt
<lf><cr> --- ONLY ONE MANDATORY "empty line"... here is where most of the people do wrong
INDEX
....
My request for feature would be an option for setting an arbitrary screen aspect ratio. One could use left analog stick up/down to change the vertical size and left/right to change the horizontal size of a movie. This would be useful, because some of the movies don't come in the right format. If you try to watch a WAF release 2.85:1 aspect ratio you would need such feature. Of course it is useful for other formats also.

p.s. I'd strongly support following standards, but not making it 'just' to work with anything. Keep it 'pro' not lame.

Tomorrow i will post them for sure. Don't remember in which one was an error. As i see, Subtitle Workshop can detect a 18 types of errors, so any of .srt file may have even one of them. But most of them not critical.

Subtitle Workshop help don't have any mention about this error, so may be this is not critical for srt :chinscrat ?

@Mr.Worm: Here is five srt subtitles with the same errors, which happened during time loading - SEQUENCE ERROR(338,11,52,11,11).
What does it mean ?

Is that all ??? Subtitle Workshop find only forbidden symbol and too long string in this fragment. Nothing about empty line beetween subtitles. In Any case I don't see the reson to not load subtitles at all.
http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/subtitles/srt.html
SRT is perhaps the most basic of all subtitle formats.
It consists of four parts, all in text..
1. A number indicating the which subtitle it is in the sequence.
2. The time that the subtitle should appear on the screen, and then disappear.
3. The subtitle itself.
4. A blank line indicating the start of a new subtitle.

I see, the rules for SRT subs is very simple. And i am sure this is very simple to avoid this type of error during parsing subs. And no one media player reject this subs like erroneus.

You can just skip all CR/LF symbols while new index not appears.
@Voldemar_u2: feel free to make any modifications/bug fixes in SMS. It's available in SVN ;). I've made .srt support in accordance to specs. Point. Sorry.
Aspect ratio and other graphics related things (jagged lines etc.) is work in progress. A very slow work, since I'm quite busy at work these days. Sorry again...
