I've tried to install 4 different DMS 4 Pro chips into four different v13's (luckily all of my own) and all of ended in the video signal init'ing, but then a blacksreen. After removing the chips the consoles still did not boot. Also the DVD assembly would power on, move to read a disc, but then failed to turn the laser on.

Of course I've ...

check for shorts using a multi-meter
scanned the boards at 4800dpi and looked for stray solder
checked fuses
wore a static wrist band the entire time
checked the chips on another machine (v9) and they all worked fine

Any ideas for future installs as the four v13 are now history?

I've installed a DMS4 Lite in a v13 and everything works fine. I had a little problem on the first boot, the disc didn't start spinning. This was caused by the ribbon not being inserted deep enough, once I re-inserted it all worked fine.
Strange thing this problem happens on all 4 your v13's, you must be doing something wrong.
I always use a multimeter to check each connection for shorts, but also for properly made connections (follow copper trace).
I also check each connection with a magnifying glass, this reveals details you couldn't see otherwise. I use the lens of a camera.
Looking at the solder points this way (with a lens) motivates me to clean the solder area, which removes a lot of copper rests, caused by scratching/preparing the solder points.

I and others have had the black screen at bootup with the 4 pro and v13
Try reinstalling the chips and in recovery mode booting any toxic bios disc exept 0.3 and then flash.
recovery mode is 3x reset. power on with power reset button wait 2 seconds tap reset wait 2 seconds and tap reset again. this should bring up the Sony screen and the flash disc should boot. If it does not, try again. I had the exact same problem on 3 v13's.

Test with ToxicOS 0.2, or Toxic BIOS 1.3.

If the console works then, we have a current issue on our hands.

uhhh thats what I was saying.
exept with more detail... like flash with any toxic bios, exept 0.3, in recovery mode.
I posted at DMS forums a week ago and have not had much feedback.

well, toxic bios 1.3 works, but not toxicOS 0.3.

in my experience anyway...

i can also now confirm this, i just modded two v13's and they are exhibiting the exact same problems as brakken said...

heh nvm seems one of the cd/dvd points was exposed a little too much and touched a bit of the gnd coating...
