OK, first of all, let me say, I hate sending traffic over to that OTHER site  ... But they have posted a tutorial and patches to make GT4 compatible with HDA/HDL (not just toxic)
Check it out for yourself.

Been waiting for this even though I bought the game... the load times can be brutal sometimes.

i just tried it and it worked fine.
i had a couple of problems while patching the iso.
Step 5: Re-packing core.gt4 and rebuilding the header
1)Execute:
?gzip ?n -9 core.gt4.elf?
i think i got "directory or file is invalid or dosent exist". (not to sure what it said but i just continued)
edit: ok apparently the "space" characters in the doc is diffrent from actually pressing the space bar on your keyboard. i was copying and pasting and i copied it straight from the document.
4)Select the first ?10 bytes? and hit ?delete? to delete them. (hit okay when prompted)(all bytes up to ?CC5A?)
during this part i had alot more extra bytes to the left of the "CC5A" part. and in the right window, it said core.gt4. so it didnt actually match up to the picture in the instructions.

When I get to the IML2ISO step, the ISO created is less than 2MB long. Not sure what's wrong there.
Edit: never mind, I see that the IML file is hard-coded for drive C: and I had them on drive E:. If any of you are like me and just have a small C: partition for the OS only, then open the IML in notepad and use find/replace to edit.
Building image now, should be installing shortly.
Oh and to the guy that had problems with the hexedit, start over. To make things easier, install Hex Workshop since that is the one used in the example (you can get a free trial.)

Installing now over hdldump... I imagine this will take a good 90-100 minutes.
In the meantime I'm wondering... I wonder how large a PPF would be if we simply made one by comparing the original ripped image to the final edited one? If the file wasn't too large, that would certainly be easy for everyone else.

I seen a guide around about making PPF files by reading the original image and then reading the modified one. I wonder if it would it be possible to make an overall patch that would do the whole image in one swoop? save a lot of processing time and remove any errors. (took an 1 hr on my 2500+ to do - rip 15 min, extract 8 min, edit 10 min, rebuild 20 min = ~53 min )

Instead of pathing and hex editing, just extract all the folders and files of both layers and overwrite the files inside this zip
xxxx (this file is ok here?, pls do not ban)
then go to the last step of IML2ISO which you will need gt4_hdd.iml & gt4_hdd.ims in the same folder as where you dumped both layers.
NOTE1: you do not need anything else if you overwrite the files using the link above
NOTE2: if the last step creates a 1MB ISO file go here
http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=35408
I think it's not okay because there are copyrighted files in your zip file.
It's better removing... ;)

Feeling like a dummy cus i cant get this to work...
I have my real retail NTSC GT4 DVD9 game which i use DVD Decrypter to make the ISO.
ISO come to 4.94 GB and extracted with Apache (both layers) to test\GRANTURISMO4 is about the same size.
I followed the DOC notes carefully and exactly.
(not copy and paste but typed cmd commands) with the 2 .zips extracted to test\GRANTURISMO4.
Hex edited CORE.GT4 perfectly after the cmd procedures.
Made the ISO with IML2ISO and end up with a gt4_hdd.iso that is 2.94 GB.
Used WinHIIP to install but wont work because it says invalid ISO or something so i used HDLdumb (had to give it a partition name) and it installed ok.
Started up with HDAvance and HDLoader but after the first warning screen it just stays black like has always done.
It also made half the games install on my HDD a bad partition which i had to delete.
My guess is that i havent extracted the full DVD which should be more than 5GB but DVD Decrypter wont make the iso over 5GB.
I bought this game and been dying to play it but dont want to kill my laser again.
Anyone have any ideas to what im doing wrong?

Hmmm did you have GT4L1.VOL in the same folder as everything else? Not in a seperate folder? Just curious...... and I guess trying to help.
That is probably it, I did the same thing until I noticed that GT4L1.VOL extracts to another subfolder called GRANTURISMO4, ie, c:\test\GRANTURISMO4\GRANTURISMO4 rather than c:\test\GRANTURISMO4, if you leave the default folder in Apache. Just move GT4L1.VOL back one directory where GT4.VOL is and you'll be good.
Working 100% for me here! Intro fully plays so whoever said there's a problem with that fucked up.
To you guys getting "invalid ISO" messages, which program is telling you that? Winhiip, iml2iso, or what? Be specific... I installed the final gt4_hdd.iso using HDLDump and all went well.

I got a v10 ps2 with the dms3 in it
loading hdl off dms HDDexplorer
i also originally had the black screen and it wouldn't load when i ran the game off the hdd
i ripped the image off the original and followed the guide
as many of u know with hdl there was a v9/v10 booting issue and u needed to put an original cd / dvd in the system like the network disk that came with the n/a
i poped that disk in the ps2 and ran it off hdl and it seems to be working fine
just a heads up
anyone else know any solutions around this?

For those who got it working, plz tell if it load as well as GT3? Though people have already confirmed it working, none (unless I missed something) actually say if it load alot faster, and by how much. Because the closest I got is Nismobeach mentioning "Bye bye crappy load times!." Thanks guys!

Just wanna say thanks. Took me a couple tries, but I got it working(I'm not flaming, but we could use a more idiot-proof tutorial, lol). When I converted the iml to iso, the IML2DVD hung at 99%. I just used HDLdumb to load the iml directly and it worked fine.

lol all the "official" releases are nuked because none of them worked - you can't even find an ntsc copy on the net (which is the proper 5+gb size) lol.
sony is loving this one - more and more sales, the warezers keep running out of luck - poor bastards.

Nuthing simple like that at the moment and i dont think there will be one for a while.
I highly suggest you use this working patch.
The tutorial may seem a lil vague or something but it works.
Just free up some space on your home PC drive, read around some threads, make notes of what worked and what didnt, go over the tutorial carefully and keep trying.
I went thru making 6 ISO trials but now i got it.

Im hearing around a few sites some requests for a patched iso of GT4.
Dunno if the patched ISO can be burned to a DVD and work.
This is one game you should buy not just only to have as the FULL real untouched version but becuase its a very cool racer.

Ok my PAL version works (used the guys batch file to do most of it). A word of warning like i just read another get teh same.. the IML2DVD program stopped at 99% so use the other one (that is suggested in the read meof the original patch... iml2iso).
There is only one thing i noticed while playing the HDD Version... i did a license and the time saved in the top 10 was a totally incorrect date to what it should be. Rebooted console to check system date/time and all was accurate. So i dont know if this is to do with HDL or something else (i've read somethign to do with dates or times with that but never took notice so if anyone knows, feel free to learn me). :D
So other then that... PAL all working great here. :)

Working on the PAL retail version for me. I used the kuvert files i posted earlier and followed the tutorial.
It seems to hang at 99% but that is because it it adding the 2 largest files last. Just wait and it completes fine.
I transferred over using LordBogami v1.1 in about 4 mins, playing Arcade mode now :)
I dont have any DL blanks here to try otherwise i would burn and let you know.

Why don't YOU burn to DVD DL and test it? Eitherway, I highly doubt it. They are flatening the image to one big Layer... but I've been wrong before...
To make it easy on everyone, since making a PPF of the HDL ISO vs the Clean ISO would be too large.. .can someone post a SFV of a 'working' HDL GT4 ISO? Preferable one that is verified working, and one tested with IML2ISO (not IML2DVD, since that has been hanging on people at 99%).

the iml file doesn't point to the folder your files are in
open the iml file with notepad and use edit/replace to change the path of the files so it is the same as the files on your hd

Here is the ppf patches for Chinese version (SCAJ_300.07), the correct header for CORE.GT4 is 0101 B4C1 5C00 however it still works with the header from US and PAL version (0101 CC5E 5D00).
Both pal (strike one) and Chinese versions are working great here. ;)
I' suggest you 'd better not use "0101 B4C1 5C00", because it doesn't work with USBA.(30000+Trad. chinese GT4)
But I didn't try "0101 B4C1 5C00" with HDL("0101 CC5E 5D00" is working fine with my SCPH-30000 w/HDL)
Anyway, using "0101 CC5E 5D00" will be better I think.

Okay listen up guys..the next person to post a copyrighted file in this topic will find their account banned. I've had to delete 3 or 4 attachments, no more. The next time I have to delete any copyrighted files (Coming from original GT4 disc of ANY region) I will give the user name of the person who posted it to the admins and see that you will lose your account. Discussion is fine, asking for help is also fine, but posting such files will NOT be tolerated. I don't want to be an asshole, but I am just looking out for the site, and those who own it and are responsible for it. I recommend you all read the forum rules, because I've had enough of this and I won't lose any sleep over any of you losing your account here.

I finally figured it out. I should have just downloaded the original file and read the readme and followed the instructions. Doh! I simply downloaded the ntsc bat file and tried to figure out everything with that, but it has no readme file. heheh oops. After using the bat file to do some of the work, Hex editing the one other file with Hex Workshop, and then putting the game contents in a C:\test\GRANTURISMO4 folder and using the IML2ISO seems to be working fine. I will be using WinHIIP to transfer to HDD to test for myself soon. My many thanks goes out to toolboy for the awesome job getting this to work, and my thanks goes to dosdo for making it a bit simpler for us lazy people. :)

Just so you all know, it doesn't appear that using makeppf3 is possible for an all-in-one patch. The final gt4_hdd.iso file is a few megs smaller than the original ripped ISO, so makeppf3 will just complain that the file sizes don't match.

You most likely don't have the GT4L1.VOL in the same folder as everything else. It's not supposed to be in it's own sub-directory. Place it with the other files (Like GT4.VOL). That should give you a correct ISO size.
4.94 sounds about right. It's more or less 5 GB.

Okay. I''ve tried to patch my GT4 Pal but i've had to change a few things. I had to change the drive to E: because i didnt have enough space. i replaced all of the C:'s in the IML and i changed the SCUS to SCES. i use IML 2 ISO and it says it has completed but when i open the iso file it still comes up with the SCUS file. I decided to use WINhiip to transfer the file anyway and left the Boot file as the SCUS one because the was automatically put up on the screen. It transfered but when i tried to load the game from HDadvance the screen went black straight away. Any ideas.

in my opinion will not work because you have a single layer iso
EntwinedWS
04-12-2005, 05:24 PM
Correct. This is only for playing off the HDD. This process flattens it to a single layer ISO, so it will not make a burnable image. It must be transferred via network or WinHIIP. The patch to play it off DVD+RDL has been promised by you know who from DMS/Toxic, but it has not been made public yet.

I think HD L blocks the networking device. because internet games didnt work either. so there is no workaround.
But maybe it is possible with the usb HD L.
THPS works in LAN with HDLoader.

Well, I was working with the pal version, and the only problem is the iml2iso conversion...using apache or iml2dvd it seems to hang at the end and continues forever, I can notice that while filesize increases a few kb per second. Using standard iml2iso I had to break the process when the image reaches 7Gb!!!!
So I used apache image (cut by process when reach 100%) and mount to alcohol virtual drive (dont know why winhiip didn't accept the iso) and then use winhiip as source dvdrom, weird.
Is there a correct solution to make a good ISO, any program that can finish it correctly??? or is there any converter iml to anything that may work???
The game goes perfect with no modes....

There is only one thing i noticed while playing the HDD Version... i did a license and the time saved in the top 10 was a totally incorrect date to what it should be. Rebooted console to check system date/time and all was accurate.
Try Zer0-X's hdloader with the toxic core available here:

Alright, I folled the instructions to the T and everything went well. I am now transferring to the ps2 via hdl_svr. It'll take about 2 hours. My point is, anyone who is having problems is doing SOMETHING wrong.
Also, if you are using hdl_dumb, you DO NOT need to convert the .iml to an .iso since hdl_dumb supports .iml images.
I'll post my results when it finishes installing.

 ok guys i finally got it working it had to do with the original iml and ims files i think becuz i d'l zajco files and rebuilt the iso with dvd IML2ISO and this time winhip actually read it as a iso image and loaded it on and it worked i think i was yes installing it wrong with hdl_dump but i also think maybe my hard drive does not support or like hdl_dump becuz ive never succesfully loaded an image on with hdl_dump. ne ways thankx to everyone who helped me and to toolboy u the man and if ne one else comes across the same prob (i doubt u will cuz that was such a basic prob :banghead: ) u jus need to get the iml and ims files from about page 9 they are zajco files and then swap them for the ones all ready there and load it on with winhip or u could uses hdl_dump properly cuz oviously i wasnt.

Alright, I followed the guide, transferred using hdl_svr and it works!
As an aside, I think this game SUCKS! You have to be a fucking rocket scientist just to turn the corner. I mean, your going 10 mph and you touch the brake and then you slide like 500 feet down the track. It's realistic, I'll give you that, but when the last time jeff gordan got out of his car and said 'wow that was fun'.
Maybe once I get used to the gay ass braking system it might be funner but c'mon. I suppose it would be 10x easier if I had a steering wheel system but I never plan to purchase one.
please don't flame me, it's my opinion :)

Alright, ive got everything complted up until I have to make the new ISO I launch IML2DVD and wait. The program reaches 99 percent pretty quickly. I realize that the two largest files are at the end but I let this run for almost 50 minutes before stopping it. As opposed to the 15-30 described in the guide. Has anybody else had this problem and how long has it taken you to make the new ISO?

If you guys are having troubles converting it to an ISO, and have your PS2 harddrive hooked up to your PC, it is a LOT easier to just use HDL_Dumb program, as it can transfer the iml file, istead of you having to convert it to ISO, then transfer the ISO with a program. This is of course, as I said, if your PS2 harddrive is connected to your PC.

I totally hear you on the braking. However, the gameplay really depends on the car that you choose. Some cars have awesome control (Subaru WRX Race car) and others suck balls.

Very true, but unfortunatly, when you are getting you license you MUST use the car they choose, so even if you do figure the car out it will be different than the next car you use. Also, they take alot of advantage of the pressure sensitivity of the ps2 controller which means you cant just mash the brake button.
Oh and I forgot to say thanks to the thread starter and the creaters of the patch. It was especially useful to me since I tried to boot the origional but it refused to play. Although I did [later] take the ps2 apart and cleaned the lens with a qtip an alcohol (worked like a charm).

"Ahh, caca. The iso is at 5.36gb that's too much. Wtf is going on?" The ISO isn't supposed to be burned, its supposed to be transferred to your HDD. A DVD5 rip won't be do-able until the VOL file extractor rebuilder is finished.

i had the same prob it stopped at 99% with 1 file left that was when i used iml2dvd. I then used gdvd-iml2iso 4.0 and it went to 100% and worked perfect.
i didnt think the braking and handling where that difficult usually 1 or 2 tries on a license test to get the technique down.

Stop the presses...
LAN mode is indeed broken. It hangs forever at the loading screen. For me this is a dealbreaker... I'm planning on getting into some serious online racing through Xlink Kai eventually, so hopefully this can get fixed.
And before somebody says it again, NO, HDL doesn't inherently break the NA, it just doesn't work with DNAS. LAN modes on other games as well as older non-DNAS titles work fine on HDL.
The game needs one more patch to fix this important feature! Oh well, good thing I bought it in case nobody fixes it.

I just tried to make my (retail) PAL version compatible with HDLoader following the first tutorial posted here, but it doesn't work (black screen after first warning).
I used the PAL ppf-files accordingly and followed the tutorial up to step 6 where I used the "zajco.iml" file (for PAL version) instead of the original one. I transfered the IML to my HD via HDL_Dumb but the game won't work in HDLoader.
Maybe someone can put up a comprehensive tutorial for the PAL version, I don't know what I'm doing wrong ...

5,23 GB (5.618.059.264 Bytes)
I'm using the english batch file as we speak to see if it works out better. I'll report my results in a few minutes. Just read that copying and pasting the commands from the first tutorial (the .doc file) could mess up things, maybe that was the problem ...
EDIT: The patched game works fine now from HDL. Seems that the copy & paste process really messed up a few commands. The size of the working ISO is:
5,25 GB (5.639.045.120 Bytes)
A universal patcher would still be very much appreciated.

I know people have been using Hdldumb/Hdldump to transfer it but I have been using Wiinhip all along and dont want to risk having the problems that other people have had in the past like getting games corrupted and deleted from their hard drive.

2. ISO turned out to be 4.90GB (5,272,002,560) exact same size as the people who said it's working.
3. I loaded the iso image to a virtual dvd-drive and put it onto the HDD using Winhiip 1.6.6.0
4. Boot up the image, it goes through the whole sony crap flashes the auto-load disk in the upper-right corner and then goes black, and stays that way. (where it would play the intro)
that about sums it up for me.
