when i got tired of trying to get ps2 games 'workable' on the usb (just for kicks) i figured i'd at least try it with some emulators. i noticed that when you load the entry from the usbadv list, it'll let you browse the virtual cd as if it were an actual cd. this is pretty cool. (yes i know this was posted in another post)
my question is probably more of an emulator specific question than an actual hdd question, but since i'm trying to run it with usbadv i figured i'd post it here.
my only problem is that once the emulator loads up and i browse the disc and folders, all i get is the infamous 'par de roms' message. now i've seen posts on this board regarding this, but no real clear answers as how to remedy this ouside of not having multiple nested folders, too many files per folder, etc.
what i have in the root is:
\SYSTEM.CNF
\INFOGB.ELF or INFONES.ELF
then my directories
\0000
\0100
\0200
etc
each with only 100 .gbc rom files in each. and the last folder only has 12 roms.
now, i can see the folders when browsing without a problem, but if i try to enter them i only get the 'pas de roms' message and no rom listing.
i would think that there's some very simple thing i'm missing here, but i don't know what it is. if anyone knows how to get this going and able to browse thru the directories and could share this information, i'd be very greatful.
TIA :)

I have used both InfoNES and InfoGB in exactly the same way, and have never seen this problem. The only explanation I can see is that you may be using the wrong filename extensions. These emulators only recognize a single extension each as valid for the ROM files. For InfoNES that extension is ".NES" and for InfoGB it is ".GB". Any other file types will be completely ignored.
This explains why you have problems with GBC ROMs, as they will have to be renamed to use the extension ".GB" instead of ".GBC", but it doesn't explain why you have similar problems with NES ROMs. For those the standard extension is and always has been the same ".NES" which InfoNES wants, so there should be no conflict. But it is still something you should check of course.

my gbc roms run fine with the extension .gbc on infogb-hd. I have no clue though man, both those emus should let you see the appropiate roms. best i can suggest is just to make a couple partitions for each romset om the hdd itself and browse from there. good luck

You are quite correct in saying that the harddisk version of the emulators have different extension support (by Kaylakaze). But we were discussing the original versions of InfoNES/InfoGB that were released in the '7not6 christmas pack'. Those versions are intended for use either on CDROM or via PS2Link, and they support only one ROM extension each. (This is clear from source code.) The point of using the old versions with USBadvance is that they work fine with its virtual CDROM emulation, so it's another way of testing that without using full PS2 games.

got it working now, thanks :)
now if i could just figure out how to step back out of a dir to root, i'd be in emu heaven :)
if you press R2 during gameplay it brings you back to the dir you were in, but i can't seem to find a way to step out of that dir back to :\ root. any ideas?

The line selected then is not a real ROM, but the word "retour", which I assume is french for "return". Pressing X here will back out of this ROM folder, so you can choose another. This method works for both InfoGB and InfoNES (7not6 release).

Those games require Mode 3 to be enabled, however USB Extreme and I suppose USB Advance as well do not support Mode 3. So many of the EA games are non-playable.

I'm playing with it now - it runs fine but I can't get it to find any roms.....
Anyone know where I should put them? How does the 'virtual cd' work?
Cheers,
Rob.

This will answer your question about SNES station.
http://ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31064
In case you didn't read the pinned articles that say *README*, it says SNES Station doesn't have HD support.

Some emulators work fine with both USBadvance and HDLoader, accessing ROMs from the virtual CD. But there are two kinds of emulators that can't do that.
One is the kind that were developed specifically for HD (or any specific non-CD media), such as Kaylakazes versions of InfoGB and InfoNES. These don't look for ROMs on any CD, physical or virtual. this is no real problem, as they still work fine with ROMs on HDD when used as intended (not via USBadvance or HDLoader).
The other kind (eg: SNES-station) does look for ROMs on the CD, but before doing so it has loaded new CDROM drivers, thus 'disconnecting' the virtual CD of USBadvance or HDLoader. In some cases this still alows access to ROMs on a physical CD, but there's not much point in having the emulator on HDD then...

Thank you dlanor - superb explanation.
Just one more quick question, how does the Virtual CD work? Does it look at the image on the USB drive as a CD, in which case I just need to dump any files I need to access into the image when I build it?

For a program that doesn't load new CD drivers, yes that's it. It can access the virtual CD image on USB, from which the program was booted, in exactly the same way it would access a physical CD when booted from that.

Ok, I am new to all of this emulation stuff atleast on a console. I can get SnesStation to run but only if it is loaded off my jumpdrive. Now I do have the new slim ps2 and have read about sony fixed something that won't allow certain cd to not be readable. I would like to know maybe what I am doing wrong, or if the new slim version will not allow me. Thanks.

Has anyone succesfully got any emulators to work with USB hardware, with the roms being held on the USB drive? If so which ones so I can try.
Thanks.
