I wasn't aware it was a problem title. The US version installed and played for me without any unusual hassle, or even mode changing.
apprently the US is OK on most systems , but the JAP freezes at the ' Now Loading ' screen.

Yes, please give some details! I'd really love to get this one working off the HD.
I just tried the "cd trick", using CDRWin, but that didn't give me any results...

It happens, man, it happens. Things around here are crazy enough and the threads get chaotic.
So, anyway, back to the topic..
As far as I know, it's NOT supposed to work, but if someone has some miracle method of getting it working it'd REALLY make my day since that's pretty much the last title on my "want to play on HD" list. (Now that I have G3+4 working, anyway. That was the other one I'd been really wanting.)

I just booted my HDLoader disc and installed Gradius V from my original disc. It's the same way I install all my US games. The only way I ever install differently is with my Japanese system, by using the Memory Card version and swapping my hard drive into my Japanese PS2. I have no means to attach any of my hard drives to my computers, as my iMac has no extra hard drive slots, and my other computers are laptops.

On the 'no way to hook it to computer' problem, you could try a USB drive bay. I'm pretty sure that the drive should show up as a proper normal HD under Mac OS, as it does on XP.
As for G5, I'm completely stumped. Do you have any modes turned on or anything? You have got to be the ONLY person I know who has it working. I've tried installing from original disc via network and PS2 itself, from ISO-- I've tried just about everything. We have the same model PS2, too. Very strange.

No modes were enabled after I installed it. Two of my friends tried installing from my disc to their systems, and the results were interesting. One worked just like mine, and the other didn't. When we swapped the hard drives around, the games still worked on both systems that they orignally worked on, but not on the one system that didn't run it before. That leads me to believe that it installs properly on any system, but some systems seem to just not be able to boot it and hang at a black screen. I'll ask both of them what their model numbers are.
As for the USB enclosure... There's no Mac OS 9 version of WINHIIP or such, and my Mac has only USB 1.1 and no DVD drive (It's a Bondi iMac with the RAM maxed out and a 120 GB hard drive, but it cannot be upgraded much past that). My iBook is about the same age but with a smaller hard drive and the same device limitations. Also, the Windows laptop I have is not permanently mine, and I'm not going to buy extra hardware just for it when it could be taken back from me at any time. I can install all of the games I need anyway between both systems that I own, so installing via computer isn't a problem when I don't download games.

I don't know if this helps anyone but I've been trying out USBExtreme and both Gradius 5 (PAL and Japanese) and Ratchet and Clank 1 (PAL) run fine from it. The movie files all stream too slowly but if you skip them the games run without a hitch.
Heck - I even had Gradius 5 running off my USB flashdrive.
I also use HDAdvance and was wondering if the compatability issues it has with these two and other games could be fixed by looking at the USBExtreme driver code? I don't have the tech to do it myself (I am a programmer but c# and java, not low-level c and asm), from what other people have been saying about patching HDLoader for God of War, I was wondering if some of the API calls in the HDLoader/HDAdvance driver return dodgy values and stop these games from working too?

I'm still trying to get a hold of my friends whose systems we tried the game on. I work evenings and sleep during the day, and their schedules do not line up with mine often. I'm pretty sure the one that it didn't work on was a model 39001 though...

Some lists account Gradius V as playable in ToxicOS. I couldn't boot it though. Any luck with it?
