hi there ppl,

i modded a v4 with a infinity, and when i turn it on normal, the screen stays black (also with controller plugged in), but when i turn it on by pushing the power button until the blue eject led turns, and put in the upgrade cd, it will start booting, and finally boot the cd (v1.38)...

but when i press start to flash the chip, it says programming failed!!

can any1 help me out on this!

thx in advance, greetz Me

think you have to check the bios connections

thx 4 your reply jemico

i've checked if they made contact to eatchother, e.g. pin 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and so on, i also measured if the wires where connected properly but i don't c any errors :(

i also can add that i've switched chips and resulting the same problem...., i'll check my wires again, but it think they are ok...

some other advice?

Are these genuine Infinitys or clones ? 'cos clones can't be flashed or altered. If they are genuine, you've probably got a wire in the wrong place or something - can you scan your installation for us ?

thx for all your reply's

i've switched chip with an already working flashed one but still with the same result, i get a black screen on boot, but it still is possible though to load the upgrade cd when turned on by pressing the power button for a long time!! but i won't try that because the chip is 100% properly flashed...

i guess i'm gonna remove the chip and see how it works then tommorrow, but any more help is wanted...

(btw these are genuine matrix infinity chips)

Sounds like a wiring problem, then.

tug on the bios wires (on the chip and the pads), if they come off resolder until they cannot be pulled off.

wat u should do is to take the chip out make suer eht console is working. Then from there isntall the chip without abi then test it out

loy, thx for your reply m8, we tried that and it didnt work then, we made it original again and gave it back....

now, some time after this has happend, we have another v4....

THE SAME PROBLEM,

it only boots when i turn it on pressing the power button for a long time, until the boot screen comes up.....this way i can boot the firmware disc, but it doesnt program the chip, it takes forever at "programming" and hangs? at it....i dunno for sure because i dont c any changes on screen...

PLZ help, damn v4....

can some1 give me his mod method for a v4, his points used with a matrix infinity, i got mine off site.....

maybe other 3.3v or gnd points needed?

There's definitely a wire that's in the wrong place. Can you scan your installation for us to look at ?

some things to look at find a closer ground and power point shorten all the wires

jaac
03-01-2005, 10:55 PM
i know shortening the wires could help the problem, and offcourse i will try that again, but i'd tried that also on my previous v4 with that problem (i also used thicker wires for Power and Ground) and it didnt solved the problem,

most off the times i place the chip about there, and allways works.....

thx for your help...

OK, couple of things. First, the Ground and power need to be shortened. You need to use alternate points for v3 and GND, check around with an ohm meter. And yes, you need 22 ga wire or better for power and ground. Also, point Y needs to be 24 ga, as that is used for clocking and effects the firmware update (along with everything else). Be careful with this, it's easy to lift the point off the mainboard when soldering a thicker gauge wire. I'll try and get a pic posted for you of a Matrix in V4 if I have one...

gortizone, are you sure? I wouldn't try to do that. Where did you get that point from?

Also, make sure you're burning your cds at 8x max. v4 could have problems reading by now... if you haven't changed the laser yet.

That's the one I always use on V4 :)

There are probably a hundred Y points on any mainboard, it's only used as a clocking signal. Data is sent from the mainboard to the chip, nothing from chip to Y point. And as luck would have it, I just modded a V4 Matrix system minutes ago. I have a pic on the install attached. Use the ground that I used, it's much closer to the chip. Also, notice the 22 ga wire for power and ground, this is essential. Y point should use 24/26 ga, the rest of the points use 30 ga. I'm guessing the main problem on this install is the Y point, but I would fix the power and ground as well.

Also, try and keep the wire for Y separate from the rest of the wires to reduce chances for interference.

ok, im back, from netherlands, big time difference :)

im gonna try a shitload of all the reply's i got, THX 4 all the help guys...

i noticed you "madisonmods" have a non-gap v4, the ones i had problems with are/where GAP bios versions... it doesnt need to make any difference, i installed it correctly, but like i said, im gonna try all the tips i got....

also must notice, when i put my ps2's back together,i offcourse insulate the chip and the wires, and lead them nicely around the board before putting the metal plate back....

Jaac- It is also probably easier for you to use the pads on the bios instead of the chip legs (P-M have to be on chip legs, the others go on the pads). You'll get a better connection. However, I can give you a 99% guarantee that if you correct the problems with power, ground, and Y it will work. The wire thickness is VERY important, and is the cause of most chip installation problems. Also, being from the Netherlands, stay out of the "coffee shops" before you mod... ;)

brigde the diode on the modchip.
i had the same problems on two v9-consoles. both works now fine.

jaac

Dolf, i have spare diodes, for pic fix off v12, which i aint using anymore, maybe i could use those, dunno how to measure them though, stupid me..

madison, i now used thicker wires, shortend them a bit, but the chip is on almost the same place as my and your mod picture..... also i seperated the Y wire.

i dont have the GA wire your talking about and cant find them on the net, but i do have electronic kabel whith a mutch better thickness 0.50mm which i used now, almost the same as in your example....
i did find kynar and/or AWG wires on the net, and im gonna get me those soon...

about the pads, im sure i connected it safe/proper to the bios, and the pads are different on a GAP bios, so it would take me some time, measuring it, so it seems safe to stick to my bios connections for the moment...

im gonna put it back together now, and let you know my results soon...

w000t,

thx 4 the help guys, it's worked out great, the thicker wires and seprating the Y wires made flashing prossible, it didnt take long...

after that i could boot normally and insert all the DVD backups i like :) sw33t

great help, i didnt have any problems before using the same thin wires for all my connections, until these v4's, i know better know, and gonna use it for all my mods from now on!!

Time for some smoking in a "coffee shop" :)

Grtz, and thx again!

As you found, the V4 is probably one of the most picky systems for modding, so good to hear you got it working. Another thing you can do for power and ground if you don't have the proper thickness wires is to double (or triple) up two smaller wires (30 ga). Same effect as one thicker wire...

I got the same problem, I had changed to a bigger wire for the Y but still not working. Could you guys have a look for me? Thanks alot!

long power wire change to alt point. Umm shorten all your wires. U can move you chip to get shorter wires

This is all a bit wierd. I had a V3 yesterday with exactly the same problem. I simply replaced the chip using the exact same wires that were already connected, and then it programmed. I don't understand why the 2nd chip programmed as I didn't change any wires etc. I just assume/d that the 1st chip is/was faulty. ???

Hello all. I have the same problem with my V4 split bios (PAL) and I just can't get it to take the BIOS. It always says "Program failed, press any key". I've tried everything above, including the other Y point suggested as well as bridging the diode on the chip. I've also used a larger diameter wire for Y with no help. My ground and 3.3V wire are also larger gauge. My chip is quite close to the bios (mounted on top of the 2 chips next to the BIOS with hot glue, well isolated). I've replaced the chip with another and same problem (both homebrew with no Bios yet). I've triple checked all my contacts with a meter and all seems perfect.

I can hold the reset button to get the PS2 to boot, and maybe 1 out of 3 tries I can get the infinity bios update disk to take and prompt me to press start to program. However it always fails after about a second.

I'm pulling my hair out and I'm hoping someone has any other suggestions. Do you think if I can get a bios on the chip in another machine, then put it back into this one it would work?

Suggestions greatly appreciated, as well as any alternate points I can try.

By the way, I buy my chips from an official Infinity reseller listed on thier site... its not a fake.
