I thought I'd start up this thread so we all would have a little database of what DVD media brands work with the PS2 and what ones do not work. If a thread like this already exists feel free to delete it, mods.

AVB DVD-R - Tested on my V4 with a DVD movie copy burned at 1x and it works.

It's not the brand that's important, it's the manufacturer.
Brand produce different level of quality media.
For exemple Verbatim both produces low cost DVD-R manufactured by "CMC" and high-end quality DVD-R manufactured by Mitsubishi.
While both carry the brand "Verbatim", they are very different quality wise (and in price too ^_^)
If on the package you see manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemicals, Taiyo Yuden, Fuji or other famous japanese manufacturers, you can't go wrong.
Later,

Geez, a thread like this pops up every month or so. Visit this URL to figure out what media to use and what not to use

Anything in the 1st or 2nd group will work well on your PS2

I use TDK dvd+r, but they're quite slow on my v4, (eg.: don't bother to play nfs2 because the race is paused every now and then to load new graphics)

I'm quite curious what you guys consider a good DVD brand.

Have an interesting update.
Burnt some images on TDK, but they were too slow when playing games. The drive couldn't keep up the speed so it resulted in stuttering games.

Now I've burnt it on a Sony 8x DVD+R on 2.4x speed (slowest) and it works like a dream. Also the PS2-drive makes less noise now while reading the discs.
Burning it actually on 8x results in an unloadable DVD. it hangs while loading.

This means there are (at least) 2 factors which affects the result:
1. Brand (Sony works for me. TDK looks nice but is too slow)
2. Burn Speed (I assume slow burning is more accurate)

Cheers.

Personally, I use Fuji Film 8x DVD+Rs, Made in Japan. They are Taiyo Yuden, known to be one of the best media manufacturers out there.

The Ritek 4xs (Marked at RITEK G04) work well in PS2s, but they are becoming harder to find since they aren't producing new ones. Their next-generation media, the Ritek G05 8x, are hit or miss. While they are good on price, Ritek's quality has been spotty lately. For about 10 cents more per disk, you can get Taiyo Yuden.

You can find the Fuji Film TYs on sale at Best Buy almost every other week. 19.99 for a 50 pack. Just make sure you get the Fuji Film spindles with the Black Bottoms and labeled as "Made in Japan". Those are definately TYs. The gray spindles are made in Taiwan and usually CMC crap.

Now, how do you know what's good media or not? I suggest going over to http://club.cdfreaks.com and their Media forum. There's various testing tools there where you can test your burns. I suggest using KProbe if you have a Lite-On drive or Nero Speed Test if you have any others. Plextor's PlexTools is supposively a good testing suite, but I haven't played with it yet.

If you want to see scans of a TY vs. a Ritek disc, just PM me. Both are readable on a PS2, but the TY is just generally safer for the PS2's fragile laser.

EDIT: The Fuji TY's that I mentioned in this article are currently on sale at Best Buy. 100 for 39.95. Just make sure you get the Made in Japan ones.

The stuttering is from too many PIF errors on your burn, not the drive itself. PI/PIF testing is used to verify that data on the disk. If these errors are too high, they usually render the disk unreadable.

The Maximum DVD specifications for standard disks are usually 280 PI/80 PIF. However, in the burning community, this is generally considered a bad burn. Older drives, including the PS2, are known to stutter with PI/PIF errors this high.

On my PS2 burns, I usually try to keep my max PI/PIF at 16/2 and the average PI/PIF at 3/.5. These usually keep the drive as happy as possible.
