My PC is a piece of shit and i need to get one thing done on it and it won't fucking let me do it!!!!!!!!! I need to fdisk a RAW Hdd that I have, it is a Laptop HDD hooked up via a IDE to USb cable. i go to run fdisk an dit says:

Command Prompt - fdisk
C:\windows\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The System file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

All the other functions of DOS work like cd and md and other dos commands.

Please can you help me or I might just beat the shit out of my PC!!

http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ ;)

fdisk doesn't exist on windows nt. it's probably still there from when you upgraded from windows 9x you need to use the disk managment module for the mmc.

start>run mmc c:\winnt\system32\compmgmt.msc

replace winnt with your windows dir ofcourse

then goto disk managment.

DONT create dynamic disks or whatever that windowsxp stupid snake oil thingy is.

MD and CD (and many more aswell) are internal DOS commands, that is why they exist in Win XP too. Fdisk deos not exist, do what HypERSoniC suggested, or get a tool like Partitionmagic which will let you do anything with your HDD's.

Have You Tried Any Third Party Programs Like Partition Magic? Why Are You Trying To Fdisk The Drive? Is It So You Can Reformat? If So You Should Be Able To Reformat The Drive Through Explorer

unless there is no information on the drive explorer would be useless. did you erase your hdd and is now trying to reinstall the os?

well my pc will not format it so i am going to format the PC with windows 98. it is a RAW format.

Yes, as the partition information was lost. If that was fat32 before the action (if that was formatted at all...) Win98 probably can read that with no problem. (strange XP problem, had to deal with that several times) Under XP you first have to delete that partition, then create a new one, and you can format that then. RAW partitions cannot be formatted directly. Or as we suggested, use any 3rd party tool, you can do any task with those much faster...

with windows xp try:-

enter "MMC" in RUN
File-->Add/Remove Snap-in
Click on ADD
New window appears double click on Disk Management
New window, click finish
Click on OK
Click on Disk Management(LOCAL)
then right click on disk 1 and select the first option
now right click on the right box next to the Disk 1 Box
Then click on format, and format it the way you want it, select your partition letter and your ready to go.

i dont think this would work. for the simple fact that he said it wont load so windows isnt even starting up. this happened to me with my pc and i had to buy a new hdd. the tech. told me a had a few bad/corrupted sectors and it could of been from a virus.

Nope, he did not say it is his system HDD. He said it is a laptop HDD which he wanted to format. (and I suppose the OS runs from his original PC HDD, as he said it is only a laptop HDD connected via an USB/IDE adapter) So in that case the Disk Managment tool would help, BUT, I have seen several cases when that refused to format a partition as it was RAW. Then one had to delete that RAW partition first, then had to create a new one, and then Windows was able to reformat it. Well to be honest, it takes more time to write this all than doing the task he needs...
