Arrrrrrr, something in yon BST forum caught me eye and I thought...hey, other people here may like to have fun with this. So 'ere it is...

New PCs...by law (yes I checked it is a law) Computers that come loaded with software MUST also come with the disks containing said software, for the person that has bought the PC has also purchased yon liscense to all software contained on the PC.

NOW, with windows XP being pirated so much what Companies are doing is this. You get CDs of loaded software (cuz most is shareware or freeware or POS programs anyway) but to get a recovery disk, or OS disk, you must contact the vendor (Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc) to get yer disks. It's a double security measure. They will take down yer SN of yer PC and match it to the XP liscense # they have on the disk. Then when ya load it, XP verifies over the net that yer PC and XP are the same as was reported to MS. Pretty slick move if'n ya ask me. Now granted, that only works on XP Home Edition and not pro. hehehe

Hmm.. What happens when said SN does not match? I installed XP Home that came with this computer here (That being a Dell 8250) on an old HP Pavillion and everything checked out just fine, and I never got a dirty letter.

was the install to the hp a clean hard drive because you could still install the dell software if you zero the hdd of the hp. as the capt. said you would have to call the hp company for a recovery disc and then they would ask for the sn for the hp and would send you the hp version of the windows.
i called compaq for a recovery disc for my presario and installed that version on my kids hp 4550 and it work fine.

That is the lamest thing I've ever heard :( what's that have to do with piracy? you can't usr those disks on any PC that it didn't come with anyhow (well maybe some model but that's bout it, doesn't make any sense, as that's not where piracy is happening IMO!

i believe that dell and emachine from my experience are the only ones that block you from using their recovery discs on another machine beside the same model as the disc came with. i could be wrong though

I know my old compaq did it, I'm sure they all do it, probably required.
