In my opinion it's a great idea. By turning the PS2 into a 'multifunction' machine, it swayed me to purchase it over an Xbox. I didn't have a DVD player at the time, but it was a definate perk to play both games and movies on the same machine. It might add more wear to the machine, but you get more use out of it. There were times where I wouldn't play a game for months but still be using it to watch all my movies on. I love the DVD feature.

The XBOX plays games and DVD movies so how could it "sway" you.

probably because it couldn't play dvd movies out of the box. You had to buy another adapter.

Not if you mod it :D

Eventually after getting a killer deal on a new Xbox (free) I did mod it so I could watch DVD's. DVD-X was the program that I used. I really wasn't impressed with it, the controls on the PS2 were much more intuitive. When I got my PS2, price was an important factor (and when the PS2 was much more expensive than it is now) , and to drop another 30 bucks on an adapter was more than I wanted to do.

I didn't like the Xbox at first, but god, is it an amazing system for homebrew.

i like watching my movies on my ps2... using ps2reality's media player it works pretty well, can put like 7 movies onto a dvd...

the only problem is the error correction sucks, so sometimes if a movies is not 100% encoded properly, or a single bit was lost, it may skip or not work at all...

a complete re-encoding is needed at that point
