This is a quick Tutorial on how to make your old school controllers useable on your ps2
WARNING: If done incorrectly you may cause damage to your PS2, controllers, etc. I am not responsible.

#1: Setting up your ps2 controller as a host
- For a connector I used a joystick extension I got at a local PC parts shop for like $7. You want to cut about 1ft off for your host controller and can use the rest for your NES/Genesis controller.
- You want to get a PSX controller that you can take apart to use as a host controller. I got mine at BestBuy for like $5 and it's a MadCatz.
- Then take the plastic cover off of it, and take the circuit board out.
- You may want to drill a hole for the wire in the back piece of the controller cover to pass the wire through.
- Now you want to drill out a hole for each button so you can pass the wires for each button through the back.
http://img48.exs.cx/img48/3540/100_0616copy1.jpg
-Here is the color coding I used:
Green - Start
L Green - Select
Brown - Ground
Red - Up
Orange - Down
Yellow - Left
Blue - Right
Pink - Triangle
Gray - Square
Violet - X
White - Circle
- Solder each of the corresponding wires to the points on the PSX board, may want to use a little flux to help it stick.
- Make sure all of the connections are good and put the controller back together.
- Now you have a host controller for this mod. (P.S. if you do it this way the PSX controller is still fully functional)

#2: Setting up your old school controller

- Pick the controller you want to use for your emulator. These are pics of a Sega Genesis controller, the one with just A,B,C.
- Now you want to take the cover off and take the genesis circuit board out.
- You now are going to want to cut off the contoller wire and remove/desolder all of the components on the board such as the reistors, etc. (They can damage your PS2)
- Now for the soldering. I just followed the buttons to the corresponding holes the controller used originally.

http://img91.exs.cx/img91/6836/100_615.jpg
- Here are the corresponding colors for the Genesis controller:
Start - Green
A - Gray
B - Violet
C - White
Ground - Brown
- Now put the controller back together and you are done.

All you have to do is plug the male end of the joystick wire coming from your Genesis controller into the female end coming out of the PSX.
If you use the setup like this, you can mod all of your old school controllers and just plug in whichever one you want! :p

I have a NES-controller, i've soldered the wire to PS2-controller, but i dont know where to solder the end of the wire to NES-controller, cause there is only 5 original wires, and i need eight (left, right,up,down, select, start,A,B) And i dont know how to solder them to the controller. can anyone help? If someone haves schematics or something?

you need to use a different cable, that's why i used the joystick extension because you have 15 wires to work with...and you should be able to just run down a point for ground, if you still can't i'll open mine up and check, let me know

That would be awesome if you could give me the shematics for Nes-controller, cause im pretty new with electronics..

i'm really busy at the moment with exams and programs being due right now, but give me a couple days, i'll open mine up, and give you pics and documentation like i did above with the genesis controller... and like Espi69 reminded me, make sure you are using a psx controller WITHOUT the force feedback or L3 and R3 joysticks or you will have to do alot more work to be able to use the start and select...

If I understand you right you want to chop of the psx controller and wire the cable into the snes controler? That would be imposible. Maybe you could Remove most of the psx controler and put what you have left into the snes controler. It would be very hard if not imposible. You would need to find some way to keep the control chip, and the resisters etc. from the ps2 controller.

I know there are some ps2 controlers that didn't cover the pins of that chip with all that black crap so you could see were all the buttons traced back to. It was one of the old ps2 dule force 2 controllers. I used one of them I had laying around the house when I made my arcade controll panel. The new ones have the black crap and 2 seperate grounds, found that out the hard way, one for start and selct and one for the rest of the controller.

If you can find one of the old ones you could in therory remove the control chip etc. and solder everything up dirctly to that chip; then put the chip inside the snes controler. But like I said this would be very hard if not impossible. Its been a long time since I opend up a controller so I don't know exactly what would need to be kept.

Edit: Digital controllers my not have the black stuff on them, I have never used a digital one only the analog ones.

how about soldering snes cables here will this work?

I don't think that will work. If the snes controller used the same controll chip, sent out the same signal, and used the same voltage then maybe. The chip is under that blob, but it is much smaller than the one in the controller I previously talked about.

You should just try and track down one of those snes to psx controller addapters they used to make. I remember seeing some when the playstation first came out. You will probably only find the other way around now adays though.

so you're going directly from the nes controller to the ps2 plug? how?

Duey2k
01-04-2005, 12:56 AM
you strip the nes board and squese it all in 1 case, same for the genesis (genesis has alot more room)

the n64 is going to take a pcb rebuild but its actually easier than it looks :)

i used to have the controller to controller back in the dreamcast days. the nice thing is playstation is universal, every system (PC, XBOX, DC, NGC) capable of emulation have a conversion kit to make a playstation controller work on it :). also working on an atari.

I too have been doing this for quit some time, and am about to work on a ps2-n64 controller hack. Its realy for my gamecube but I'm using a ps2 controller because, like you said, its universal. You could even use your nes-psx controller on your nes just for kicks.

Anyway about the n64 controller do you know if it had analoge buttons? I think I read that it did but thinking back I can't remember any games that made use of it.

Ive been trying to think about how to handle c-up. I've already tested out my right analog stick in my ps2 controller and the voltave goes down when I press up so I was thinking about cuting all the contacts from my ground on c-up and soldering a resister on it then conecting the signal trace to the signal on the potintiometer so that when it connects to the resister it will lower the voltage. Any thoughts anyone?

lol...i love the sketch...i give you a 10 for presentation...however took me like 5 min to figure out what you are doing.....i thought about somehting like htis but as far as i have tested the remote had soo much lag it was pretty unusable. ill look into that more as i have 4 diffrent remotes inclusing the super small dual sided madcats one... that would fit easily.....

oh also love the naruto ava...
