I've seen replacement psu's that take 12v and GND, but they cost way too much so wanted to modify my psu to run off a car battery. Has anyone done this before and how is it achieved?

just go to RS stross , or pep boys , auto zone or maybe even k-mart... they sell the DC shit that u hook up to your car lighter , or u can splice it and hook it up else where and they u can just use anythign that have a normal house plug simply by pluging it into this box...plug in the ps 2 and your on your way

Should of made it clear, I don't want a power invertor, I want to directly run the ps2 from 12v.

You're going to run into a problem here. A car's 12V source is never actually 12V, it's usually between 13-15V. If you wanted to modify your ps2 to run from 12V you can probably just bypass the power supply all togeather and run it right to the motherboard, however in this case you'd need a small circuit to regulate voltage at 12V so you don't blow up your ps2. You have an interesting idea, I just don't know how safely it can be done.

well, they sell regulators to keep it at 12v no matta how high it goes....hook ity up juss liek dat

Hehe, yeah but I still don't know if I'd trust it powering a $150 piece of hardware. Just makes you wonder why the ps2 power supply board is so big ;) All in all though, it SHOULD work.

I'd personally just get a Cigarette Inverter and call it good but thats me I guess.

oh God no.... don't do that..... teh system board runs with TTL circuitry.... 5.5 volts(or less).... the HDD and CDVD use 12 volt...... you can insert an unregulated voltage into the PSU just after the voltage conversion (transformer). this will allow the system to convert and regulate the lower voltages that the MB will need.... Don't ask me where you need to insert the voltage.... I haven't done this.... just make sure you check the PSU for the unregulated 12v signal...then apply your power....

just hope that the transformer isn't a multi voltage unit.... meaning that 12 and 5 volts come from the transformer.... if so you will need to make a 5v regulator and then inject the 5v into the 5v stream.

i got the info on how to do this at home. ill post it here in a few hours.

btw bearcity sells a pretty interesting power supply just for this
