First of all, A BIG FAT THANK YOU, FROM A BIG FAT MAN
Is there a limit as to how many roms can be placed in the files.txt? I have over 500 roms I would like to put in there, but dont want to waste 3 days compiling the list if I can only put in 40 or so.
Does the folder for roms need to be on the MC or the HDD, and again, is there a limit of roms per folder? muchas gracias

Simply fantastic! I've been hoping someone would tackle an Atari2600 port / rewrite...

Now to dig out those old 2600 controllers and start hacking a ps2 pad :)

Does this run with keyloader? what should the setup be? I put the elf, modified files.txt, and the roms (8) BADATA-SYSTEM directory. and when I launch it with keyloader I get a black screen. Then I tried putting the roms in a ROMS subdirectory, and same black sceen.

BraveDog

There shouldn't be a limit to the number of ROMS. It finds out how many lines are in the FILES.TXT file, then malloc's enough memory to hold the names. So it should work, but it's never been tested. Let me know if you have problems.
I have use started it with ps2menu, naplink, and launchElf. I haven't use keylauncher. Anyone else get it to work with keylauncher?
I had my IP banned from ownz, so I can't even see what they posted.

vinniev2222

Isnt that nice of them to IP ban someone contributing to their list of emu's? crack asses. Anyway, my keylauncher doesnt work either. i finished my rom list of 411 roms, and the elf loads up fine and sees the list, but it gets stuck on the loading rom screen with every game. same if I use a smaller file.txt with only like 20 roms on it. I'm probably doing something wrong though.

chaisnaw76
09-26-2004, 07:20 PM
All I get is a black screen when I start the emulator. No list of games or anything. (tried with the FILES.TXT in the same directory as the elf, and in a ROMS subdirectory.)

Help is on the way. I found out why it didn't launch from keylauncher.
I am putting better error messages in now so it should give more info than a black screen.
I am also going to test it from CD.
Look for a new version in a couple days or so.

Great work on the Atari 2600 emulator. I've been wanting an Atari 2600 emu for PS2 for a while.

BTW: To people looking for Homebrew roms, you can get some Atari 2600 Homebrew roms from the mini-games competitions, I have the links at http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26342 .

I still can't get any of my roms to load up -- --- -here's my last attempt at my files.txt with a little over 100 lines. (no roms attatched) if someone would look at it and tell me what I'm doing wrong. The .BIN entries are exactly as they appear in windows. Thanks! I have tried running it with all files in same dir. from mc as well as hdd.

vinniev,
I don't see anything wrong with your FILES.TXT. I'd try version 1.1 if something goes wrong it does a better job of displaying helpful error messages. ROM files are case sensitive so the filename has to match exactly. There is also a limit to the length of the filename on the memory card. Not sure what it is, but it is best to use short filenames.

MegomanJess,
Sounds like you are new to ps2 homebrew code. That's ok. There is much to read on the net and in these forums to explain how to run homebrew code on the ps2. There are many ways to do it and the best way depends on what equipment you have for your ps2. Of course you need ROM files. Look two posts above yours. EugeneWE3RD posted a link to public domain ROMS http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26342

Thnks for the reply. I did notice that when the roms are displayed in ps2menuk, they are all in caps, so I guess I'll try to shorten the names, and make a files.txt in all caps maybe. I Appreciate the work!!

man, what am I doing wrong. I dl'd 1.1, changed my ifles.txt, shortened bin names, and made all caps, still gets the "error loading rom" message. Everything for the emu, elf amd roms, are all in the bad-data folder, does that make a difference? Thanks

BraveDog
10-04-2004, 09:36 AM
vinniev,
Your ROMS need to go into a sub directory 'ROMS'.
If you have your pvcs.elf in 'mc0:/BADATA-SYSTEM' then make
'mc0:/BADATA-SYSTEM/ROMS' and put them in there.

Well, I just tried out PVCS using the homebrew Atari 2600 games from PD Roms & it's great that the PS2 finally has an emulator of the system which bought gaming into people's living rooms. The emulator did fail to load some of the homebrew games but most of them did load up.

If anyone can't get the emulator to load up your roms, the roms must be in a folder called roms & FILE.TXT must be in the same directory as pvcs.elf.

PVCS runs perfectly from the HDD using PS2MENU. I have PVCS in a directory called Atari while my roms are in the directory called roms located in the Atari directory so this prog has no problems loading from HDD using PS2MENU.

This can be installed/run from the HDD. I run this prog thru PS2MENU & it works like a charm. You install all the files into the same directory & your roms must be stored in a directory called roms which is created in the same directory as PVCS.

Tried installing latest version on cd. Works fine, just that it wont read after the 30th ROM.

Tried doing the various folders trick and files.txt mod (same trick used in atari5200 emu)but did not work.

Otherwise, works pretty well i must say...

seems to be the typical iso9660 limitations (max 31 files in root dir).
PVCS is not using the CDVD lib ?

BraveDog
11-10-2004, 10:41 AM
It uses the functions fioOpen, fioLseek, fioRead, and fioClose.
Is there something newer or better to use?

evilo

the libcdvd from hyriu that add support for ISO Level 1, ISO Level 2, Joliet, and UDF Filing Systems.

http://ps2dev.org/kb.x?T=996

files are still accessed using fioOPen, etc.. but by using "cdfs:" and no more "cdrom0:" so change is really easy to do (Initialization fct are different also since you must use the one from the lib).

I hate to be an ass about this...but if you did a little bit more reading on this....then you wouldn't have had to use up almost a whole page just for your rom list. The problem with all of you "newb's" is that you want an immediate response to your question. Instead of being lazy and careless about your quest to use the free software that some of these kind people have worked hard on in their spare time, why don't you use the search tool, I know...very very difficult, and do some reading!!

Gladiator,

-BraveDogNot sure if you changed anything, but I downloaded a big pack of .a26 roms and I batched renamed them all to .bin and they loaded perfectly.

I did find a bug in one of my favorite games, though. In Bowling, if you throw the ball, random pins fall down depending on where you throw the ball. It's kinda funny but impossible to play.

I know that this thread is almost one year old but I suggest that anyone who wants Atari 2600 roms goto http://www.pdroms.de/index.php & also check out the pdroms news archive at http://www.pdroms.de/archive.php?PHPSESSID=359a33da3f660e052b7128ffecee 3de1 because there has been a good amount of homebrew Atari 2600 roms which have come out over the last month or 2.

Here are some more Homebrew Atari 2600 games:

The website called Atariage is a company who publishes homebrew games onto Atari 2600 cartridges with permission of the homebrew authors. The homebrew authors make money on each cartridge sold. Atariage also allows some of the games to be downloaded from their site.

The list of homebrew roms sold at Atariage are at:

http://www.atariage.com/software_list.html?SystemID=2600&searchRarity=11

These are the games which Atariage gives a free download of the rom so that you can play them on emulators so you don't have to order a cartridge. The games which have a free rom download on the above site are:

Backfire
Climber 5
Crazy Balloon
Crazy Valet
Dark Mage
Euchre
Fall Down
FlapPing
Go Fish!
Gunfight
INV
INV+
Jammed
JoustPong
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

just put everything on your harddisk or memory card and play, it's that easy. If you don't know how to put things there start reading it's been explained a dozen of times allready ( this is my first post and i'm a newbie 2 but i hate posting, more time waiting for an answer if you will ever get one ). Also the readme says there is untested support for cd so the easiest would be put everything in an iso with eg ultraiso, magiciso, ... ( make sure joliet and all enhancement options are disabled ) all files only use CAPITALS, that there is a FILES.TXT in the root of the cd that contains the links as explained in readme. o when making a cd i read that you don't put your roms in a folder but also in the root of the cd. That should basicly be it

ive tried building an atari cd since i dont know how to transfer it to memcard i havent got a cable to connect it to a pc
(if anyone could post a thread to how you transfer it to memcard that would be cool) this is how far ive got. PLEASE comment on any thing that looks wrong or post pictures using -print screen on keyboard and pasting into microsoft word file

copied system.cnf from ps2 media player
(opened up system.cnf with txt file and copied the elf name )
and renamed pcvs.elf into ps2mediaplay.elf
made a sub dir ROMS & put in my roms
edited the FILES.TXT like - Command,ROMS/Command.bin & with the rest.
FILES.TXT is left in the root dir
Burned to disc using nero Making a straight data disc

wmy pcvs disk is burned and ready

i boot up with swap magic 3.6 plus
load up the disk by pressing square - special boot
loads up to the main menu
i press load from cd & it quickly loads to cd and i can see the roms folder
but when i click on that i briefly get a txt saying (Loading.......) then it switches to memcard
if a memcard is in it will display all my save files an when i click on one it says
NO ROM FOUND a bit backwards if you ask me

when i tried it with PVCS 1.2 i get the roms that i listed. but when i clik on one i get ERROR LOADING ROM.

i know i'm new and youve probably already mentioned how to do it but ive wasted about 20 cds trying to do it ive read through this whole site an didnt find what i was after what we need is a good STEP BY STEP guide on to Build and how to load the pvcs programme with pictures so spastics like me can follow it piece by piece trust me it would save a lot of time for people who are as computer literate as those long time hackers PLEASE show some love for those who wanna raz the atari

I've run in a similar problem then I removed the FILES.TXT file and PVCS can browse the files directly. It is less user friendly but it works.

ive got it sussed now yeah. i still build it up with the system file from ps2 media player cause i dont know how to make then ( if any one know please post a FAQ for it respect ) put in the roms in the folder and like egodoy found out you don't need to spend hors writing a txt file you dont even need it but leave an empty one jus in case now heres the best part. when you've loaded the program very quickly tap the x and all the roms you put in the folder will show.

if you hold the button for even half a second you ll skip thru the roms and into the memcard and into the memcard error

i then went back to test all the coasters i did by jus tapping X quickly and they all worked

I felt like a right cunt for wasting all thoses CDs but i got there in the end
now me and my girld jus spend all night playing 2 player combat together
