Hello guys!
Throw here some ideas/suggestions to improve this port of BOR for our lovely PS2.

I'll start with two okay? :)
1)I said to pixel once to add Hdd support in the future.. but if he cant do it now, there is a suggestion for others that want to help him to improve this port.

2) I know that it may sound dumb but it would be nice to add maybe a LAN/Network play to the game. Why? Because we could play BOR with a friend that is far from you at home... so we could use xlink kai evolution vii (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk) to host a room and invite a friend there (I wasnt going to play this game on LAN, come on.. I have two pads :P), it would work almost the same as Kaillera client (http://www.kaillera.com) for some windows arcade/console emulators.

Ok.. cya dudes next time!

For the 1) I have no HDD, so, I can't test/port the actual code. But maybe it would work straight, thanks to the "where am I run from" detection code. Feedback welcome.

For the 2), hum, well, that would eventually mean changing the internals of the engine. Rather a work for senile's team I'd say, but, well, in order to achieve that, one has to do "data synchronization". And I've never tried that in my own coding life :p

Humm you mean installing it with hdloader?
Cause I had a good idea.. (based in the same idea that i said to you once about dms3hddformat partitions in the first news about PS2BOR). I know that you dont have a spare HD for testing porpose (ok, but let me continue :P)... You could use "where am I run from" detection code to detect a BOR partition on hdd..
For example.. the default partition name that PS2BOR.ELF would look for would be +PS2BOR (+ because it means that is a storage partition.. its the same type of partition used for pgen roms) and there would be PAK files that would be also detectable. And you ask me "how are you planning to exec PS2BOR.ELF" and I say "from DMS HDD Explorer" :).. "But i said i dont have hd.. how i will test it?" I can help with it :)

Thats a problem.. Senile team is excelent (I loved their game and i will love the next) but I doubt they would care about a network gameplay.

No, he means that if you put it on the HDD and use something like PS2MENU to run it (I'd assume DMS HDD explorer as well), it might work already, as it checks the path it was run from to load the files from.

For example.. the default partition name that PS2BOR.ELF would look for would be +PS2BOR (+ because it means that is a storage partition..
Actually, the + means it's a shared partition, and not everone agrees we should be doing it... but it's become sorta the defacto standard since the main partition tool uses it...

Drake is right, and, bor won't ever work with hdthing.

Sorry for my dumb question.. Did you say it wont EVER work with HD?

I'm curious, did you compress BOR.ELF with ps2-packer? Or is it uncompressed already?

And Drakonite I said to PS2BOR mods use +PS2BOR partition (common/shared partition) because it would be easy to send mods through ftp with execftps :)

EDIT: Tried with HDLoader but it hanged at Disclaimer screen.. now trying as E P did.

Well Pixel I tried BOR on the HD. I loaded it using PS2MNU-K and it works great. Took three attempts to get EXECFTPS to transfer that large pak file to my +MAIN partition. Hopefully the bugs with EXECFPTS will be worked out soon. Anyway no sound problems that I was aware of and I played to stage 6 on easy until I died. I really could use rapid fire as my fingers get tired after a while that and no analog hurts. Sorry, I can't speak for how the game is supposed to play as I have not played BOR until today.

Anyway thanks for opening this game up to the ps2 homebrew scene, as I probably never would have been able to play it on my console.

I mean it won't work with either hdloader or hdadvance

Thanks E P for the great news ;)

And, hum, maybe if you're smart enough, you could find how I managed to finish up the game without beeing an hardcore gamer ^_^

And no, I didn't compress the binary.

Pixel.. I tested with DMS3HDDxplorer:
pfs:/__BOOT/PS2BOR.ELF
pfs:/__BOOT/bor.pak
and it didnt work buuuuuut after it i tried to execute PS2BOR.ELF with PS2MNU-K and it worked 100%

Great job with your port Pixel.. Honestly your port is smoother than Neil's port.
I hope you port the next senile game in the future for ps2 too :)

(Loading from HDD is better :D.. thank you E P)

The only glitches that I noticed on PS2BOR until round 4 (im playing now hehe) are some gfx glitches that are linked to the fonts (like score and time). The rest is perfect :)

Yeah, I noticed that glitch as well. I quite don't know where it comes from exactly, but I suspect some non-reentrant problem into printf or something similar...

ps2menu and altimit have a fakehost loader. basically this fools apps that are loaded with ps2menu or altimit to think that they are being loaded using naplink or ps2link. The files are then loaded from the specific partition and path that the original elf was loaded from the hard drive.

Hummm interesting :)
Its good play it with ps2menu.. i dont want to look lazy but i would prefer if it could be like I described here and in the other thread (I know that pixel doesnt have HD.. i wont say it again LOL).

Off-topic:Gee, do you know if DMS3 Team is working on a better HDDExplorer? (It would be nice if they could do something more professional with more compatibility like ps2menu) Because their software is outdated, you know... we cant load many things from there :P. I'm asking it because I read in the forums that you knew these guys.

Sorta off topic, but you should avoid doing anything with the __BOOT partition if you can help it... It's a Sony defined partition that has a special purpose, and putting things there can end up causing problems.

Off-topic: As I know its the default DMS3 HDDXplorer partition.. the Sony's partition is another that i forget the name.. [I know that "Common" partition is for back-ups of your saves (only avaiable for those who installed the new sony browser)]
Am I wrong? O_O

And drakonite.. i dont know if you wont like my question but are you still improving PSMS ? And do you know anything about SJeep's PGEN ? (I ask the same question for Hiryu's SStation) I haven't seen them for a while on gamebase forums.

Cya!

__boot is defined by Sony, and as far as I'm concerned DMS3 HDD explorer really shouldn't be dumping all it's things to boot there either. There are actually a half dozen partitions that are created when partitioning that are defined by Sony.

PSMS is not my top priority by a long shot, however it'll still get work done on it... A complete GUI rewrite, file system browsing (similar and IMO better than PGEN) (no more files.txt), rewrite of the sound core, some special features like Save state to mc/hdd, and a few other changes. The GUI and filesystem stuff is the most work, and since it's not my main project it's really just waiting for me to finish writing it for some other project and copy it over ;)

SNES-Station is still being worked on and will see a very much improved release some day, but I wouldn't expect anything from Sjeep anymore (PGEN or otherwise) and I get the feeling he is not even going to honour the license the original emulator was under by releasing the source either...

About the partition.. humm All i can say is if you have DMS3 and HDD try installing progs to hddexplorer and then look the ps2 partitions with execftps.. you will see that the programs installed by dms3hddxplorer are installed at __BOOT ;P

damm so my favorite system emulator (genesis) wont be updated... that really sux.. at least we have an excelent emulator for windows with network support (gens).
But about PSMS and SStation im happy now :D

cya dudes!

That's really not the right thing to do...

Can you point me at the .pak file you are using ? (I am too lazy to look for it over the internet)

But, about the memory usage thing, Neill Corlett said that, in the original BOR engine, there is a memory leak. Maybe not very hard, but, which could become significant. Seems you found a pak file which is getting rid of the 32MB of the PS2...

Sjeep already released the PGEN source. And someone added proper roms listing from CD to PSMS.

ie, i want to load eithe rthe original BOR - BOR.PAK
but i also want to switch to sonicXbattle SONIC.PAK

Well, I am waiting for gsKit 0.2 for that... It should contain fontm support, which is necessary for printing the file names on screen and selecting them. I am too lazy to add a full font to ps2bor :P
