Hi!
Originally I had a self-made Neo 2.2, now an Origa mod in my PS2.
Both worked fine for CD-R (don't have a DVD writer to try DVDs) with AR2 v2.
Then I noticed a magazine called "PSi2" in a store which included a cheats CD for the PS2 which even got a small sticker "powered by AR". Since this mag was only about 6 Euros (compared to ~ 30 Euros for AR2), I wondered if this CD is suitable as a replacement boot CD.
Guess what? It worked.
So if you happen to know someone with a PIC programmer to burn a 12c509, this whole mod solution is about 10 Bucks.
Warning: Neo 2.2 chips may (or may not) destroy your DVD drive's laser over time.... Is there some conclusion on this yet?
