I am new to this scene and was looking for the cheapest way to softmod my ps2. I think it is v4, and I have a network adapter. I dont want to spend much money due to the fact that the new playstation will be out next year and this one will be obsolete. I have read some of the posts and most are just more confusing. Thanks for any replies and different methods would be appreciated. If I could avoid spending any money that would be great.

Where did you hear that ?
The PS3 is far from showing up. it hasn't even gotten a confirmed launch date in Japan, much less here.

Real nice post...great way to help him with his question. The cheapest solution you could go for is a swap trick utilizing a bootdisc set, which usually run for about twenty dollars for a set of discs. The package comes with a swap card (do a google search for swap magic and you're bound to find a site that will sell them)...

How it works:

When you purchase Swap Magic (if that's the route you decide to take) you'll receive two discs. One of them is for swapping with CD-based backups and the other is for swapping with DVD-based backups.

The first thing you'll want to do is eject your PS2's disc tray and switch off the power, with the tray sticking out. Gently pull off the front of the disc tray panel (don't worry...it snaps right back on).

Now switch on the PS2 and place the Swap magic DVD or CD (depending on the type of backup it is....for DVD use the DVD disc and CD use the CD disc) into your drive and it the eject button on the machine to close the tray.

After the disc boots, you'll come to a menu screen that will give you a few options when using the CD bootdisc (don't mess with these...the only time you'll want to change the settings is if you're going to boot a specialty program, such as a backup of Action Replay, or DVD Region X or Gameshark). You'll hear your disc drive stop spinning the disc after a few seconds. Use the swap card that came with your boot discs and insert it into the bottom part of your PS2 drive. You'll feel a small lever inside. Gently slide the card all the way to the right, and your drive will inch open.

Take your finger and gently pull out the drive. Replace the bootdisc with your CD backup. Push the try closed. Now, you're going to want to reinsert the slide card, but only the edge of the little hook (you'll need to pull the lever back to close up the drive). Barely dip the slide card in and move it over to the right. Once you feel the card click into place, slide it back to the left until it stops.

Press 'X' and you're playing your backup!

Use the same method for your DVD backups, only there isn't an option screen, just a scrolling star screen with the words 'insert game disc' or something written in the center of the screen.

Keep in mind, due to disc protection schemes, not all games work with the boot discs, but you'll rarely run into that problem.

Another solution that isn't quite a soft mod is HDLoader. If you have a compatible drive that plugs into the BBA on your PS2, you're good to go. Cracked copies of HDLoader can be found almost anywhere, and are very easy to use.

Hope this helped! ^_^

(EDIT: oh, and just fair warning: Don't go asking for copies of HDLoader, HDAdvance, or any other warez...distribution of such things isn't allowed here)

i think that Xport would be easier and faster than swap trick (if you plan on using HDloader alone), but if you wanna actually go and buy a DVD burner and burn the games, swap is the cheapest, but will take a heck of alot of time every time u wanna play a game.

He wanted a cheap, hassle-free solution...not a modchip....I think....and no, I'm not trying to start an argument over which is better...I'm a modchip user myself (formerly a swapper), so I know both sides of the bridge...

Thank you for the good replies, your answers are much appreciated. I have modded my xbox and upgraded the harddrive to store my backups. I have most of the apps for it and was getting bored with it. So I decided to try modding my ps2 for fun.
I was hoping to be able to flash the bios(I do not plan on going on line) and run backups from the harddrive. But I could not find any tutorials for this. With the xbox this is posible with game exploits.
I have read some of the questions in your forums but most are too specific to answer the questions I have. For instance, I saw you can ftp to the playstation, why cant you load backups to the harddrive this way? I have a good many questions, but I would rather read a tutorial than waste your time and a thread asking a dumb question.
Thanks again for your replies and by the way, when is the new playstation due to be out?

it was late, i was tired, blah blah blah, i have a retarded ps2 anyway :badpc:

besides, i knew others would explain it much better than me. i just get a bit annoyed by people saying the ps3 is comming out in a few months or something and that the xbox/ps3 will make the ps2 obsolete (i've heard it all)

oh well nothing personal, just a great excuse for forum spamming and cramming those extra 600 bytes of data into this page :chinscrat
