sorry for the long delay/update on our (foundmy.com) ext. case mod, its almost done with our adapter so no cutting is needed, we are just finishing up a prototype for testing.... and will be getting them mass produced...
once the testing is finished we will post pictures of it... adapter willbe like $5-10 only.

I'd buy a kit like that.
johnmerrick:
You need a 40 pin cable to hook up to the NA first. Then the 80 to run outside of the PS2 and into your HDD. Then use a small molex to run outside of the NA. The IDE cables need to be 6" or shorter I believe, otherwise the results will vary. You can go online or go to a local computer shop.

Indeed. If you get the right cables and do everything correctly (Shouldn't be too hard really), then you shouldn't have to mod the NA. I believe just finding the parts and making it will be the hardest part of the project.
IDC don't come in 80pin so u have to use 40pin IDC than 80pin ide cable
First, PCMCIA bus transfer speeds won't generally get above 12MB/s, so even ATA/66 is overkill. I mention PCMCIA because that's what the network adapter uses to interface the IDE to the PS2.
Second, no hard drives have 80 male pins on the back of them - the only difference between 40/80 wire IDE cables is that the 80 has a ground wire for each data wire, reducing signal loss and boosting transfer speeds along the same type of wire. I think the version 1.0 has it nailed.
But I don't say all this to be mean, just to clarify.

11-25-2004, 08:37 PM
80 pin is for high speed ATA... um the PS2 is 66MB.... well within the 40 pin standard
importtuner
11-25-2004, 09:09 PM
I don't believe he used the 80 pin so much for the transfer speed. It looks like he used it for the sake of not having to mod the NA. Since the 80 pin is thinner than the 40 pin. The transfer speed isn't an issue here. The 80 pin I suspect is then connected to a 40 pin ext. cable to the HDD. Of course I'm just saying this out of observation, I could be wrong...

Why do the ide cables need to be 6" or less?
HELLTICK
11-26-2004, 08:34 PM
Eight heads says his works at a longer length...I don't no why.
I tried several different brands of hdd's with and without mobile rack and my findings were 6" or less.
Or hdloader wants to reformat drive or at game launch boots to a black screen.
maybe it depends on your NA model? or possibly the 40 wire to 80 wire assembly he has going on (all data lines grounded)?
I do know if you keep it 6" or less it will work and has been confirmed by others.
Goodluck!
:)
After re-reading this thread at a more presentable hour :), I must correct my logic for using the 40 pin IDC. "IDCs don't come in 80 pin" - duh! Sorry for the confusion. :banghead:
BTW, how about using a WD Raptor with parallel adapter for SATA? :p

I was searching around on the net and I found this. The guy making the external drive kit will probably be giving us a pretty good deal here. Anyways, Stonewall Cable is the only place on the internet that I could find making custom cables. They sell Male to Female IDE extension cables that can be any length up to 48". The only problem is the price. You can order one that is 6"
http://www.stonewallcable.com/xq/asp/dept_id.122/pf_id.IDEMF%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20 %20%20/qx/product.htm

Ouch..... that's a high price! :headbutt:
On the cheap side, why couldn't you put 40 header pins into the network adapter and just use a 6" cable? Probably sounds dumb, but you could rip some out of an old parallel/serial cable or buy some cheap chips at Radioshack and gut the pins. A bridged connection only needs to be made to transfer the signal.

People I work at a company that we build video stuff and I can make those cable for cheap if I can sell 100 pieces.
Question, can you substantiate any claims as to performance of using an 80 wire ribbon (DMA/66/100/133) versus a 40 wire (DMA/33)? I don't have access to a gender changer, but would like to run some tests. After researching the PCMCIA interface, it would appear it is a standard type-III, and operating at 150MB/s bus speed (according to an online spec sheet). So if there were a way to hook the 80 wire straight to the NA, then it would be just like plugging the HD straight in. Plus perhaps the cable could be longer since there are complementing ground wires.
I guess my point is, I can see this excellent idea turn into something like the xbox's extender (unless it's probably already been done), but I would like to see no loss in data transfer rates (ie. no drawbacks to this method). :chinscrat

Sounds interesting
Would be an intersting idea to build a caddy onto the top and hard wire it into the NA (like screwing it on the top and running the cable into the hdd cage (thru a hole in the top))
Then you could even put your modded multi-tap next to it :P
with the switches ;)
damdog
12-20-2004, 08:48 PM
After weeks of messing with this I think I've got it. Since your gender changer is olny 40 wire you need to make it as short as possible. You DO lose signal! I tried just using a 40 wire extension cable to connect to the hdd. I started at 24" and went down. As the cable got shorter the signal got better but my cable got to short for what I wanted to do.
I found another 40 pin male end and made a gender changer a little over an inch long. I hooked a 80 wire(standard) ide cable to it and BINGO! I am building case with two HDD. I can select the one I want to run with a switch. Hope to have pics around Christmas. You can find male 40 pin connectors here: http://www.dataaccessories.com/idc.html Two male connectors and some old 40 wire cable you have laying around and you can make you own gender changer. Just keep it short!
HELLTICK
12-20-2004, 09:39 PM
Nice...what was the length of the 40 wire ide between NA/1" gender changer/ HDD...I hear the 80 wire (all data lines grounded) seems to help with cable length...I can't confirm this...as I only need 6" of 40 wire ide ribbon for my particular setup...I would really like to see a pic or link to this 1" gender changer...If one could get 12" of ribbon..One could easily install a 'removable hdd rack' in the stock Ps2 case..ejecting from the original expansion bay!

the work really shows, Im gonna attempt a project along those lines once I buy some others things that I need ps2 goes last lol. But I plan to add a nice external HDD case with temp monitoring and possibly not sure about this but have the case be able to use IDE and USB at the same time so It can be hooked up to the pc/ps2 at same time. That way I can transfer some ISO's of my backups without having to swap. Since Ive been out of the scene for so long I still gotta get some facts straight like with the 48bit patch if it really works as they say then im getting me this nice little 200gig Seagate (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-148-032&depa=1) for under $125 :)

The Hard drive is selected by the switch in the front. The molex connector as 4 wires 12 volt+ 12- 5- 5+. The I just control which hd gets the power by the switch. One side of the switch controls 5 volt the other 12 volt. DPDT (double post double throw? i think) Fan switch is a plain old SPST. The block in the front of my ps is the reciever for my wireless controler. The air is blown in by the fan and exits out of the holes I drilled above the top hd and around the sony hd in the back.

that's really great what you're doing here. I did something like this a while ago, but only like that first version. Can't wait to place an order. I was just curious though, if this is all possible with 2 hdd's alone, what about adding a removable drive rack system (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=list&catalog=43&DEPA=0)? like set up the hdd enclosure to fit one, two, or three (http://208.34.209.68/411gb/) hdds that are swapable? It may seem odd, but I already have 2 hdd's for all my games and I'm sure some people have more, so it just sounds like a nice addition.
I keep seeing talk of it. but is this something people need? or am one of those "few" that need more than one hdd?
