if anyone has any ideas on how we can replace the ps2 fan with a newer, quieter one, post them here.

sofar i know:

* the stock ps2 fan is too noisy
* it is a 60mm fan

Hehe i've got the same problem, although the new v9 is quieter, does it use the same fan at a lower voltage or is it a different fan?

Seems to be operating at 7v too.. hmm

I've been using this one for about a year now in my V4. It's never overheated even after 8-9 hour sessions of Prince of Persia and is nearly silent. I've run it 2-4 hour sessions with the harddrive for about a month now. Still no probs.

The way I understand it the fan line has an inline regulator that runs nominal at 7v and ramps up to a max 12v when the NA/HDD is in use.

Here is a link where you can buy it:

Does anyone know of fnas with leds on them that can fit the PS2?

Here is a very quiet fan that should fit the ps2:

In reference to this fan you've listed. I'd hazzard to guess that the CFM is too low on it. I don't know because I haven't used it but it 9 cfm at 7v it would be around 5 cfm. Also 20mm is probably too thick to fit the enclosure from what I know. Could be wrong though. The one I listed is almost 17 CFM and at 7v it would be around 9 CFM. I still have to put my ear right next to it to be sure it's working at that speed.

As far as LED's go. It's difficult to find 60x15 fans with leds. You'd probably be better off just to add them yourself. Make sure there's a proper value resistor inline with the led for long life. If you put them on the fan + then they would increase in brightness as the fan voltage ramps up. Just a thought anyway.

I was also thinking about moding my fan on my PS2.. I think it would be interesting to put a LED or LED's inline with the fan.. However.. Homegrown-do you know what resistor you would need to run just one LED to the fan?..
I would think it would be tuff to get a resister that would work sents the PS2 "Ramps up" the voltage back and forth...

Nah, it wouldn't be that hard. I used to run my fan at 12v straight off the PSU and I can tell you the inline fan voltage rarely (if ever) reaches 12v. Probably more like 7-10v and only for brief periods will it hit 10v. Like the first 1 or 2 minute you turn it on. Just use ohms law to determine a resistor value in that comfort zone.

V=IR

so for example

For a 12v supply voltage @ 20mA the required resistor would be:

10volts (PSU)/.02amps(LED) = 500ohms(RESISTOR)

(10volts because most LEDs have a 2volt voltage drop. Blue and white leds are 3.5 - 4 volts)

I did some blues inline off a 12 volt PSU last year and I think the resistors were somewhere around 140ohms (can't really remember it's been awhile) and they worked fine. Just get SMC resistors off of whatever old junk board you got laying around a solder to the leg of the LED

So if you calculate on the low value (7v) they'll get a bit brighter @10v

do regular 60mm fans slide into the fan socket of the power switch bracket?

No, I've got 2mm foam tape on the sides in bottom to hold it in place.

lol, man I havent used ohms law sents I was in high school.. Time to brush up on the basics agian I guess... Thanx for your replie homegrown...
Plus thanx for sayin that most LEDs have 2V drop.. I didnt know that..
Another thing (not to sound stuped) but was does SMC resisters mean?..
I just thought a resister was a resister but with diff. resistece specs..
Ive havent heard of a SMC resister before..

Man Im dum :banghead: Just :ban: me now.. lol

Oh, sorry dude, Surface Mount Component. They're just alot smaller for confined spaces and most eletronic boards have tons of them. Ceramic one's are fine as well though.

hi guys i was just wondering how i should go about dealing with the 60mm fans since most of them are 3-pin and the ps2 uses a 2-pin.

i found a website here that sells converters but there are 3 types..
http://www.buyextras.com/fanadca.html
which one would work for a ps2?

oh and i was thinking of getting what homegrown suggested but wouldn't this one be quieter?
http://www.stsi.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?page=STSI_4/PROD/Fans/FBA06T12L

or is the CFM rate too low for the ps2?

thanks in advance.

3 pin is the same as 2 pin... it has a sense wire.. you can just chop this off then soldier the pwr and gnd to the ps2's connection

Here's the link to my fan setup thread. Never had problems with overheating(knock the wood) plus the fan is silent. The only sound comes from the HD which can be a little noisy considering that it's a just a 5400rpm model. Or maybe I'm just too sensitive to noise :P

thanks alot.
so did cutting the plastica grill away actually make a noticable difference to the loudness?

well.. to update, i installed the FBA06T12L i ordered (thanks homegrown, but i opted for the quieter one ;) )
http://www.stsi.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?page=STSI_4/PROD/Fans/FBA06T12L

everything works great and i used cyrbanen's method of stripping the original connecter with the new fan. Now everything is running in absolute silence!! xDD actually kinda scary now because its so quiet...

well, i'm gonna let it run at the browser with the hdd connected while i go to class tonight. be back in 3 hours to check on the ps2 (hopefully it wont fry and be powered off by then)

Well, actually this was done because the new fan didn't fit automagically. I did test the old fan it without the grill and it did reduce the sound a bit but not nearly enough. The original fan was and is very noisy, no matter what.

I thought the orginal fan was a OEM product? My fan isn't loud at all and my PS2 is always cool.

Maybe you're just used to noice ;)
Actually there are some improvements noise-wise with the newer PS2 fans(V9 ->) but they are still hardly considered as quiet.

The rooms ambient noise level is a very important factor which has to be considered when measuring the actual noise from the console. My house gets really quiet at evenings to the point when the PS2's HD starts to sound like a jet engine...

That's what happen when you go the silence route. (= You can find a lot of suggestions on silentpcreview.com. Basically, if you want a quiet HD, you should look at the 2.5 inches models...

P.S. i'm considering to hide my PS2 in a closet

just a little update on my little fan-modding quest. I was so impressed with the silence I've brought to my PS2 that I recently modded my Xbox with a similar fan. Problem with the Xbox tho is that no matter what fan you use, it requires MAJOR refitting. Took me almost 3 hours to complete it, but now watching movies has never been better =D The only problem now is the HDD noise.. lol.
