Any chance of improving the fan speed? The stock one's rpm's pretty crap. I hope it'd be as easy as done like Xboxes'

Well when I did the mod for my xbox, it was pretty simple since there was a 12v wire and a 5v wire going into the xbox fan, which wasn't using 12v. I know most of the stuff on a PS2 runs on 12v but i have no idea about the fan. As you know, faster fan = more noise (unless you get a bigger fan), and the cooling is kinda unneccessary, but cooling is always fun. I'll check the voltage on the PS2 fan, and if its like running at something rather low, it would be easy to just grab some random power source off the fan, and ground the fan to the case so all the power would just go to the fan.
The thing i don't know is if the PS2 varies the speed of the fan, which would make everything difficult. It would be easy just to cut the wires on the PS2 fan and just supply a voltage and ground point from the power supply yourself, but that would leave it always at a constant speed.

I dont think that little fan would be able to handle 12V. Its been done before, but it would be at constant speed and very loud. There is a 12v source on the power supply that you can use.
Overheating isnt really a problem with the PS2 unless you dont clean it. Now, if its got a HDD, im sure thats a different issue.

I 12v fan modded mine. Its rather loud but If you can deal with it. Just Pull the fan wires, Srip em a little and Soder one into positive and one into negative On the backside of the PS2's PSU

exactly
well once a network adaptor is in use the ps2 fan spins faster since more voltage is being used

My V3 is loud enough as it is. A few months ago my ps2 fan died (or at least the wires to it died) and I had my ps2 on for an hour without any problems before I realised I couldn't hear the loud hum of the fan, so goes to show the ps2 can take some heat

i run an outside fan controller-FanMaster Fan Controller- and it runs a better 60mm fan. I also have a 80mm case fan.
i couldn't care how loud it was because i run my ps2 sound to a 7 pc 500W sound system w/ an old school tectonics amp. Also my ps2 is off to teh side of my room where noise is deflected.

If you buy a new PS2 Fan it will be as quiet as the v10 fans, these fans are faster but have a stronger material that doesn't move around as much thus not causing so much vibration, I have a v5 with a v10 fan in and it's very quiet now, but I also found I could use a normal PC 8mm fan in there, I just had to do some wire modding inside and that too worked but if your not to sure or confident about touching the the wireing then just buy a new PS2 Fan from and decent PS2 specialist on the inet, it will be what your after.

I need to find a V10 Fan My v7 is super loud and the bearings are starting to go.

ps2modder, are you able to now remove the stock fan without problems? ie no red flashing light?

I've just finished modding my console with a v9 fan that had 11 impellas, the original v7 had 7 impella and was a bit thicker. It fitted ok but recuired some minor resculpting of the case. Air flow seem good, and no over heading problems as yet. I give this mod the "Thumbs Up"

I'm wondering if there's any point on the ps2 I could solder a fan onto to reduce the voltage...I sorta blew out the fan plug on my mobo somehow, and had to find elsewhere to put it. It's just soldered to the mobo/ground and is making tons of noise. Anywhere I can solder it to quiet it down?

You could soder it to 12 volt then Put a resistor in the + line

Yep I did that to some effect, put a 1k pot in it instead, made it an ajustable fan. :P It's now really quiet and keeps the PS2 cool.

you have to realize that I am not running the power from the PS2, it comes from teh fan controller which gets it power from a powersupply.
And the red light only blinks for me when it is too hot.
