It's pretty simple.

Here's he basic guide to installing the led.

You need :
1 LED (I used a low MCD 3mm one that came like a dozen for a dollar at Radioshack.)
1 220 resistor (I used 100, because that's what I had handy left over froma bunch of xbox controller mods)
2 lenghts of wire (Mine are about 10")
1 Piece of heatshrink.
1 harddrive

First off flip over the HD so it's upside down. Set it aside and solder these togehter.

Long Leg of the Led > Resistor > Wire(red in pic) > IDE Pin 39 (The seccond pin closest to the edge)

Short Leg > Wire(Black) > 5 volt molex (the one on the inside)

Should look like this. (Sorry only one pic, camerawork is not my forte. I messed up like 5 closeups a piece trying to get pics of the 39th pin and the 5 volt.)

Pretty easy.Take off the case, then just push the HDD, wires, and LED and all through the bottom of the case(Like it would normally mount), then pull the wires and LED out of the front.

Place it back in the bottom half of the case, holding the wire and LED up, it should stick upward out of the case, and you'll be able to slide it back and forth a little.

Now you want to drill your hole for the LED. I chose the middlemost point in the case(which convieniently is where the gap between the DVD-rom and the Controller ports are in the innards.

Push the LED into the hole, and then the reset/eject buttons. Flip the top half back on, and put the screws back in. Viola... your done.

How about for those of us with V9 Consoles and dont want to take a soldering iron anywhere near our 120GB Maxtor :D Any pictures of where the orange HDD LED is located in the ps2 ect?

I haven't found this orange HDD led that supposedably exists.(I'm thinking It might be included in the 40gig Drives.)

If you don't want to touch the maxtor to do this the only other place I can think of to do this is in the Network adaptor, and then your going to have to take that apart to get to the 39th pin behind the IDE connector and solder there, and the 5 volt behind the Molex connector.

If you know how to use a solder sucker, it's a pretty safe mod.

"Dalai Liam: I haven't found this orange HDD led that supposedably exists.(I'm thinking It might be included in the 40gig Drives.)" I have a v4 ps2 and the first time i saw orange light inside my ps2 i thought it was on fire or something, but it quickly realized that it was a activity light for the hdd. the light flashes with any hdd i put in my ps2 so i dont think it only works with sony 40gb hdd's

They probably removed it in the newer models. I have a V5 and it blinks on HDD activity in any app, using both the unofficial and official hard drives. Its pretty bright as well. It looks cool diffused in the case.

its still there
it's in my V10 and i'm sure it's in my dads v9

It's between the usb ports and the drive itself (closer to the usb)

well last time I attempt to mod in the end I broke my ps2 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( so yea im pretty much screwed, after blowing a fuse I bridged it and then that ****** controller port ribbon came loose so after 50 times of put it back in tape it and it comming loose again I put crazy glue thinking it'd work well it didnt(silly me) so after slowly wetting and slowly peeling off the glue It broke the connector fromt he board so now im really pissed and wont try another mod(seems lady luck hates me) well Nice mod if I send the ps2 to get fixed ill ask them to do it for me
