I did one for my Xbox a while back and since the mod is applied dirrectly to the HD, it's most likely compatible with the HDD in my PS2 now(Not sure how the hardware in a PS2 differs in compatibility as opposed to a PC/Xbox). I've been kind of putting this mod off, but if a few people feel it needs to be done or are curious about it, I'll probably do it in the next few days.

I am curious, I saw another board member did this, but no information was supplied. Please do tell!

If you have a look at the power supply when the hdd is being accessed (through the grill next to the usb ports) there is a small diode that flashes, shouldn't be too hard replace it with another one.

hey guys, Ive done this mod to my xbox its simple and easy, I used a 220 ohm resistor, 5mm LED, and wired to the 39th pin to the HDD, is the "ground".

Run + to the red wire on your HDD (you can just solder it to the pad)
heres the TUT from X-S that I used a while back

I think it involves tapping some power for the light, and tapping in to one of the IDE wires or hdd itself...I'm not going to do it anytime soon :p

Whats the orange glow in the ps2 when the hdd is in there, it would be nice to replace that orange glow with a small LED on the front of the ps2.. it already has power and everything wired into it.. just replace it...

Basicly it involved soldering 2 wires to 2 of the IDE pins where they connect to the board on the bottom of the drive.

30000 units have a orange led near the power supply for HDD activity. 50000 units had the led removed. If you want to add a led to a 50k unit, just follow the track on a V4-V7 mobo to a pin on the expansion bay connector that has the led pin. No mystery.
The pin is connected by the network adapter to the HDD, directly, so no need to tap a wire on the HDD. get it on the expansion bay connector. ;)
