View Full Version : HDLoader - Failed To Format HDD

I put in a 5gig HDD I had laying around. It detected it and asked if I wanted to format it, I press continue and I can hear the HDD do something for a second then it says "Failed To Format HDD!". Other people have gotten really small drives to work so I don't think thats the problem.
The simple answer that covers it...some drives just will not work. I dont know why, I doubt many people do.

i just bought a wd 120gb hd and i get the failed to format error too. is there anything else that could be happening other than "some don't work". btw, i am using the 8mb rip version.

thanks for the link alcahest, but i find that chart to be somewhat misleading- most of the people that list their drive as non-working are just people that can't figure out how to mod the adapter to make it fit or get their jumper settings correct (it is apparent from their comments). so i want to push this a little more- can anyone explain why there appears to be such a large variance in compatibility? is it a limitation in the software, or is a combination of ps2 version hardware or modchip that determines it. as far as i know, HD's are pretty much identical to a pc/console- what gives? when i try to format the drive it immediately fails and errors- has anyone gotten around this?
hope you guys don't mind me beating a dead horse.

if it's a "western digital", try to set the jumper to "cable select" instead of "master".
Good luck,

I'm not sure, but didn't the hd loader web site say that WD and Segate didn't work as well and its better to use Maxtor. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You´re wrong.
http://www.hdloader.com/site.php?page=faq#What hard disk drives will work with HDLoader
They recommend Maxtor but don´t say anything against WD or Seagate.
They also recommend to check http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ for lookin up if a specific model of HDD will work

If the DMS Tool won´t do, the others will most likely also have problems.
Chances are the HDD is not compatible.
Maybe it lacks SMART capabilities.
