- Take a standard memory card and crack it open
- remove the EEPROM off the PCB
- solder in a newer (higher capacity) EEPROM from the same manufacturer - let's say 128 or 256MB ;-)

Generally, the packaging on ICs are the same up to a certain point. Toshiba (one of the IC manufacturers that provides chips for Sony memory cards) has a wide array of EEPROMs that could fit onto the memory card PCB. As long as there are 8 address lines on the chip, theoretically - I THINK - this should work.

Just a little something that I was considering...

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention, Toshiba has 1Gb EEPROMs available....

is the magicgate protection not on the eeprom?

Where can I get a 1GB that's compatible with the memory card PCB? I'll be happy to try it. I hope they aren't gorribly expensive. :-\

I doubt its as simple as swapping chips.

If it was that simple i think we would all be doing it!

The voltages would have to match. Some use different voltages for reading / writing /erasing etc. I don't know if the encryption is on the chip. If it isn't and the voltages and pins are identical, and it doesn't take too long, the chip would be detected. Whether you could actually access all of it is something else... Might need specific software. Jace

Who said anything about swapping chips?
